Morrowind and LOOT

Greetings!

I have just reinstalled Morrowind and I'm modding it: the last time I did this was a lot of years ago, when MGSO 3.0 was just released, I only used that and a few more mods.

I've seen that now the community prefers MO2 as the modding utility, so I went with that. I have followed the Morrowind Graphics Guide and added a few more mods. Installing them was no problem and if I start a new game everything seems to work just fine (apart from the grass part of Morrowind Enhanced Overhaul, that gave me plenty of error messages at start, but the author himself suggests to turn them off).

MO2 seems to show a lot of conflicts, though: at least, I think that the little "thunders" with a plus or a minus next to them are the conflicts icons. I don't really know what to do about that.

If I try to hit the "sort" button, MO2 tells me that LOOT failed to run ("Exit code was 1"). I've read that a lot of people suggest to use directly the LOOT utility: I downloaded it, but it does not recognize my Morrowind install, it only finds Oblivion and Skyrim (which I both have installed). So I don't really know how to manage my load order and how to try to solve those conflicts.

Should I just play hoping everything goes well? Anybody has suggestions?

Thank you very much!

Mosè

EDIT I think this post is more for the Morrowind Mod Troubleshooting forum, if the Admin can move it there it would be better. Sorry for the mistake!

The plugin file format changed radically between Morrowind and Oblivion, LOOT's designed for the format used by Oblivion and later games.

For load order, and a lot more, in Morrowind use mlox

Thank you Dragon32!

I have downloaded mlox and activated it following the instructions given by lukaboot in the Nexus messages, but I get an error. This is the mlox log:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "mlox.py", line 255, in <module>
File "mlox.py", line 253, in load_translations
File "codecs.pyo", line 884, in open
IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'mlox.msg'
Can you help?

What version did you download?

Where's it installed?

I have no clue about Mod Organiser, btw.

I have version 0.61 and it's installed in the same directory as the game.

Just out of curiosity, what do you use to organize mods? For Skyrim I use Vortex, but many Morrowind mods discourage its use and suggest to go with MO2...

Thank you!

Mosè

When I played Morrowind I manually managed mods.

I assume that's the executable version then, not the Python one.

mlox should be installed in

Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\mlox

But then, apparently, with Mod Organizer it should be installed here?

Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind

Try it in a sub-directory. That's what John Moonsugar recommends.

It's actually in Morrowind\mlox right now.

What do you mean by "try a sub-directory"?

Most recent version of mlox is here. Also you might need to manually download the most recent (2019) version of the rules file from here. The version it automatically downloads is an older version from 2017. (And the place to put the rules file is somewhere in your Windows user directory, which is different from the 0.6x versions.)

I'm not really familiar with MO2, I like Wrye Mash Polemos version.

  • 4 months later...

I actually used in the last months LOOT with great success (more than 200 plugins, many conflicting with each other or in need of a certain relative load order, just had to throw in some rules) and 0 problems....even tried comparing the results of LOOT sorting with, for example, modlists like Sigourn's (which comes with its load order scheme), and LOOT made a good job in handling the plugins. Sadly mlox is not being updated since more than one year, and relying ONLY on it is pretty much impossible with the amount of mods being constantly released for Morrowind.
