Steam screwed me over, can't start skyrim anymore without patching

The last time I played skyrim was in May of this year, with Skyrim Version 1.3.22 (Version number of the launcher file).

As far as I can remember, I was able to play in offline mode and it did not force me to patch, since I set skyrim to "don't update" in steam.

Now I'd like to play again, but when I try to start skyrim in offline mode, it says "This game can't be played in offline mode".

When I am online in steam, it doesn't let me launch it either, instead it forces me to download an 8gb patch.

My current internet connection does not allow me to dl an 8gb patch in any reasonable amount of time.

What's up with that? An 8gb patch is bigger than my skyrim folder in steam.

Any way I can launch skyrim without needing to dl the 8gb patch?

Not really advisable. Since it's been such a long time since you last played the game, think of it as just an extension to that time while you allow steam to update your game properly. Many mods and utilities do not support older patches and there are important bug fixes in them as well. It really is in your best interest to allow steam to patch as needed (because then the update presumably wouldn't be so huge either).

That has to be wrong. An 8gb Patch? I really don't think so. The updated game isn't 8 gig. Wonder if you could go to a friends house that also has the game (fully updated) and copy files....... There may be legal issues there, but, as you both own the game, I don't think it would be considered piracy......

I'm not entirely sure why, but Steam seems to require you to go online every so often. I assume to make sure you are still using that PC.

If you don't want Skyrim to patch use Skyrim Unplugged ( http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/12744 ) for when you do need to go online as Steam's "Do not automatically update this game" doesn't work. It has been reported on the mod page that it doesn't work but 1.3 still works for me.

Taken from the mod page you linked:

"After manually setting Automatic Updates to disable in Skyrim properties (the Update tab), verifying the game cache did not download any new files. The only bad thing is that the game was stuck in a state of Downloading Paused, which prevents you form playing the game until the download is finished. "

That's exactly my problem and it doesn't seem that the mod can fix it.

Actually, there seems to have been something very wrong.

I re-installed a fresh skyrim from dvd, and now steam only wants to patch 3.2gb. (hd textures pack is probably included in that)

Seems like it didn't recognize the previous installation for whatever reason, and wanted to dl the full game.
