[LE] Player home tutorial

Recommended Posts

Are there any comprehensive tutorials about creating player homes? Not the basic nuts and bolts about walls and doors and navmeshes, but about ownership settings of beds and door and all the proper location settings and cell settings. There doesn't seem to be any complete tutorials youtube or other, and what info you can gather seems scattered and sometimes contradictory. The info about locations in general is not very good and not all organized in one place about each setting and why you would make each choice for different effects.

There are no advanced or detailed video tutorials out there (as far as i know there are none that i couldn't ever find), all tutorials cover only the basics and they are meant for beginners modders.

The start of everyone's modding journey requires a constant research, learning and experimentation.

Unfortunately... there is no other way... but that's the whole fun of it !.

Have a happy modding !.

proper ownership for location, cells, idlemarkers, beds ect so that players get the proper rested and marriage bonuses and servants use the idlemarkers. I really don't understand the use of or setting up centermarker. Is that really needed for anything? Why do flora and barrels respawn and items knocked off tables replace themselves but items like bread taken do not. I've compared settings with a NPC residence that respawns properly and they are identical. What faction should you set for servants or guards in a playerhome? Mostly questions about locations and factions.

At some point you will out grow the tutorials. But there are many home mods you can load up in the kit and take a look at. There is also a lot you can learn from just looking around the kit. Ownership is one of the tabs on the object. Idlemarkes can just sit on the floor and the NPC's will use them randomly. I've made a few dozen homes and never heard of a centermarker. Probably used as a reference point to some script. Flora is meant to respawn/"regrow". Barrels don't respawn things unless there is some type of script attached for some reason. Items knocked around do not reset themselves unless you reset havok for some reason (I have a save editor that can do that). Guards and servants are set to the player faction (unless you do an ownership script to buy the home). The cell can be set to the player right from the kit (unless you do an ownership script to buy the home). Once you own the cell you own everything in it too. If you're testing your mod from a save that never had the mod in it (like you should be) things are not resetting. It's the 1st time you ever been there every time you do a new test. Creating a home and working with NPCs are two very different things. I suggest you get the home part done 1st then work on the NPCs. Believe me that is a whole new can of worms. Myself I've learned way more looking at other mods than any tutorials. Some of the home makers here are crazy smart and do things in ways that are so much better. You're sure welcome to take a look at my [ Enchanted Ship in a Bottle ] mod. The mod is literally a preset for making home mods. Every possible question you could have is someplace in that mod as it is about as complex as it can get and uses most every trick you could think of. It also has the locations and cells set up right and optimized. I even have a spot you can download the scripts. They cover most every possible home use. Only thing It don't do is NPCs and a you need to buy it script. But it is set up for many followers.

You have multiple aspects brought here, and there are so much others too... Locations, Factions, Ownership, NPCs, NPCs "lives" settings, objects settings, markers...

As NexusComa mentioned, opening a complete and working mod to analyze it from any way possibile is the best way to learn. That's how i ended up to be able to build towns and player homes. Note that i never used any script but one, that is already included in game. It's the script that allows a dead NPC to "spawn" in a coffin or funeral urn. In fact, it's their inventory that spawns there. Anyway, not of use in a player home, only in a town. For buying the house, i never been able to do so, never took the time to learn how either. Mines are always free. You only have to find the key or to move in from the start.

NexBeth also brought an interesting question here. Were you planning on making it a place where you could live with spouse and kids? If so, you have to make it compatible with another mod. I do that all the time. Not difficult, just long. One has to have a detailed list of everything to do to ensure it works, tho. Always great to tick what's done or not.

I can't explain EVERYTHING in here, would be very very long. About the location center marker, i never knew too much its use. It's required for a player home to be compatible with the mod allowing you to bring children and spouse in a modded home tho. As much as it's nearly always there in vanilla npcs and player homes, i never place any of them in npcs homes and it still works fine. Locations are more used for various reasons that are not really concerned for a basic player home. It's more of use for a criminality system, towns that are changing of guards according to who won the war in each region, that kind of stuff.

So yeah, begin by creating the exterior and interior of the house you'd like, then i should be able to hold your hand step by step to finish it the way you want if you want so.

Locations help optimize the cell. Also If you have multi cells it's used to link them together. Also for messenger quests. If you don't use them when you enter the cell any messenger quests looking for you may/will error. Best to take this stuff step by step. Like I said 1st make the home then work on NPCs in the home. I'm like Gerheardt no npc's, no buying my homes. I know how to do both but chose not to. Just complicates things. There is no way I'll be able to place an NPC in a home and make it look just the way I want it to anyways. Everyone uses a different body style like CBBE and has different setups. To me the trick is to be as compatible as possible. If you own the cell you own all the beds too. If you have an NPC that is in your players faction they will use the beds too or followers. That's good enough for me. Nice and totally compatible with any setup anyone has.
