SSE Function accessing variables question

I Just want to check:

I had expected that a funtion running in an event would have access (is that the right phrase?) to variables defined in the event, but that seems not to be the case, shared variables need to be either declared outside the event or passed as arguments to the funciton. Is this correct?

You are correct. Either declare in the empty state or pass the variable into the function as one of the parameters.
