Rennn
...but that would only run most pc games on med-low settings at 720p and sub 30 fps. Exactly like a 360, then.

Vagrant0
Not one worth playing games on, anyway. I did manage to create a $280 build that had the same performance as an xbox 360, but that would only run most pc games on med-low settings at 720p and sub 30 fps.Even a $500 build can be severely lacking depending on the current parts market. The advantage a console has over a similarly priced PC is that the console typically doesn't have to have nearly as many things happening at any given time. The other advantage is that the hardware and software uniform along all other consoles of that same type, so it can be specially designed or tuned towards just gaming and games can be optimized around that system. I still wouldn't bother buying a Steam console, any more than any other console though.
Beriallord
For under $1000 I can build a PC that will likely be superior to any of the next-gen consoles, and will likely be playing these console ports on mid to high settings for 4+ years in the future. I'm talking I5 3570k + Radeon 7950 GPU + all the other components, under $1000. I seriously doubt any of the next-gen consoles are going to have a CPU that can beat an I5 3570k stock, let alone with a decent overclock. The PS2 was $299 on release date, the PS3 was $599, twice as much. How much are the next gen consoles going to be? If they are pushing $800-$1000, then the advantage of consoles being a cheaper gaming platform is going to vanish completely. If they are pushing $800-$1000, then the advantage of consoles being a cheaper gaming platform is going to vanish completely.the price jump was mostly because the PS3 had Blu Ray. at the time, those were pretty damn expensive. also, what they were trying to do with the console was a lot more. look at the jump between the PS2 and PS3. Graphics wise, game size wise, integrated wireless, USB ports, Flash media Ports, HDDs, i mean there was a lot to the PS3 compared to the PS2, and to put it all in a console was probably a pretty penny, hence it all cost so much. now that theyve figured out how to do all that, and prices have gotten much cheaper on the parts (HDDs for example) thats why the new PS3s are ~$200. that and they took out things like backwards compatibility, and the Flash Media Readers and cut down on the size of the console. i wouldnt be surprised if the new generation went back up to ~$600 though. most likely it wont be because the cost of parts and stuff that cause it to be that high, but because with it being the new generation, they know a bunch of people will pay that price to have the next gen consoles when they first come out. last point. the argument is always "i can build a PC that can beat a console" well ya. but building a PC is also usually cheaper then buying one and also comes out better then buying one of the same price. if consoles were open platforms like PCs, you could probably build a console for the same price as it sells, that performs better then the console does now. Even IF you can build a $300 system that can compare to a console, chances are you wont be able to buy a whole system that can do the same. (note i did not say impossible). my point being in one case you are hand picking the best parts per price/performance, whereas on the other hand, the system is already built. youd be better off comparing the console to a pre-built $300 Dell or something. JimboUK
Rumours have it that both the PS4 and new Xbox will use the 6670 which will keep costs down. Releasing a $600 console in today's climate would be suicide, Sony couldn't shift PS3s until they cut the price and that was in a the middle of a boom. Thor.
Hopefully they won't do what they did to the 60gb and remove features that should always be in the console like ps2 backwards compatibility http://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/smile.gif , Sony's really bad for that. Also linux was a big thing but they decided to axe that one to. Another reason i am going with the steam box. I might get a ps4, but not right away, just to see what they do with it in the long run.
