Fallout New Vegas: installing NVSE creates two "mods", NVSE not deployed

Did that several times, as well as reinstalling Vortex and starting totally from scratch (with the exception of reinstalling the game). Got the same result every time until about my eighth attempt (didn't keep an exact count) at which point it worked properly.

Just to make sure I'm not nuts, I just now deleted NVSE in Vortex and tried again. I carefully followed the Vortex prompts to download and install NVSE. And now once again I have two NVSE "mods" listed. However, this time NVSE is at least properly deployed to the game folder. (When I wrote my original post, I could not get NVSE deployed.)

I then experimented with removing the two NVSE mods which I'll call Mod A ("New Vegas Script Extender") and Mod B ("nvse....7z"). Initially, Mod A is "Enabled" and Mod B is "Never installed". Here's what happens:

1. Clicking "Remove" for Mod A and leaving "Delete archive" unchecked (default) leaves me with two mods in the mods list. Mod A is now "uninstalled". Mod B is still "never installed".

2. Clicking "Remove" for Mod A and checking "Delete archive" fully removes both mods. Mods list is now empty.

3. Clicking "Remove" for Mod B and leaving "Delete archive" checked (default) removes just Mod B--it's removed from the mods list. Mod A is still "enabled" but in an apparently invalid state. For example, trying to reinstall Mod A yields a message about a damaged archive.

3. Clicking "Remove" for Mod B and unchecking "Delete archive" yields no visible change.

So it seems like Vortex is simultaneously treating the 7Z file as both another mod and the archive for Mod A. Is it possibly a result of my staging and download file structure? They're not nested as suggested earlier, but they are named similarly (and I made up my own paths; I did not follow Vortex' suggestions).

Again, this sounds like you staging and download folders are the same location, which should not be the case... When you have two entries for NVSE (if it happens again) can you open you staging folder from the Vortex toolbar and see what's in there?

It should look something like this:

Not sure how to open it in Vortex, but on the Mods tab I can click "Open..." > "Open Mod Staging Folder" and it launches Explorer which shows what you see in the attached file (Sorry--I don't know how to embed images inline in a post).

In the left-hand pane you can see the folder "downloads". That's where the 7z archive is.

Umm.. I'm not sure if there's any info in the logs that will help here.

Do you have any other Bethesda games installed? Does the problem also happen with the script extender for those game? If it doesn't I'll need to look at the NVSE specific implementation.

I have Fallout 3, NV, and 4, and Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim SE installed, but I'm modding the others with Mod Organizer (MO) and so have installed script extenders manually. (Also had a working MO setup for FNV, but set it aside to try Vortex.) I can get a clean install of another game to try with a bit of work. Any particular game you think would be instructive?

I wrote most of the code for the Script extender installation (actually, all of it but New Vegas) so it doesn't really matter. As you're using MO2 the game folders should be "clean" already. You can just remove your manually installed script extender, then manage it with Vortex and folllow the prompts.

I tried Fallout 3 and it installed FOSE fine with no duplicate mods. The process is slightly different from the NVSE process, though. Maybe that matters?

Yes it does sound similar that other problem.

I think I'll just stick with MO for now and give Vortex a try another time. Thanks for trying to help.
