XFX Radeon HD 6870 Temperature Help

Recommended Posts

Hey Nexus :)

After 2 years worth of a project, I finally built my gaming computer! Never been happier, now running Skyrim on Ultra with ENB Series with an average of about 40-60fps

Heres my speccy:

I ran into a little problem when I first started with my computer, when I initially built it I found that there was only one 6pin PCI express cable from the power supply, while my 6870 needed two. I bought a 15pin SATA power to 6pin PCIe adapter and plugged it in with the same PSU. The PSU isn't great, so I kept getting power surges when trying to run a game, even with Skyrim on the lowest possible setting (600W ACE Black Edition from Box.co.uk, I really don't recommend buying ACE PSU's after mine and my friends experience, or even anything from Box.co.uk after I tried to return it)

Eventually, I used the power supply from my old computer, powered it and hooked it into the adapter, then into my graphics card. So two power supplies are attatched into the PC, the main one attached to everything else and one 6pin in the graphics card, the old computer's PSU attatched in the graphics card alone so my two pc's stand next to each other. On idle, my GPU is at about 30-40 degrees centigrade, but while gaming I've seen that it reaches 60 degrees centigrade and looks like it keeps getting higher. This is while running nothing but Razer game booster and Skyrim.

Basically, is this too hot? Or am I just worrying too much? If it isn't what is too hot? Eventually when I have the money I'll be looking at getting liquid coolers for the PC.

Thanks guys :)

You should only be worried when your graphics card hits around 80C. Even then, that isn't TOO hot. 100C is the max.

Your GPU is fine. Just as an FYI, the GTX 480 is 40C at idle, 85-90C at load. So yeah. 60C is pretty damn good.

Nice CPU temps by the way. Which cooler you usin'?

I have a XFX 6870 (2 fans) in my rig I've been playing Skyrim on since 11\ 11\ 11, on very high settings at 1920x 1080p ~50- 60 fps (no enb's). My idle temps are ~ 55C and playing Skyrim I've seen it get to ~78C, I keep my fans on auto. Your temps are great, the only thing I would worry about is getting an adequate PSU (not enough power can damage your PC).

Thanks for the replies guys, that reassured me ;) I knew it was just me worrying far to much!

For my CPU cooler i'm just using the heatsink fan that came with it, for some reason Speccy lies, but I have the AMD Phenom II 1045T - it's an amazing processor and as far as they go it's not that expensive. Other than that, my CoolerMaster Storm Scout case came fitted with enough fans (and flashy little lights, yay)

I've looked into getting a new PSU, obviously I can't keep my set up forever, it look's like Frankensteins computer at the moment. I looked at some Corsair PSU's ranging about 50-60 pounds but i'm not too sure, as long as it has two 6pin PCIe cables and is atleast 600watts i'll be fine, what do you think?

Personally I would get a PSU larger than 600W, your video card recommends 500W (it's not as efficient as 7000 series) and your CPU 95W, leaving 5W for everything else + headroom. It's better to have a little extra than needed.

@FMS1

That "500W" requirement is just a ballpark. It's so AMD can't be liable should someone with a crummy, no-name 499W PSU have their compy blow up, because 500W is way overkill.

Your typical system with a 6990 in it will pull 545W on load. That is just, nearly, 50W over 500W.

For a system with a 6870, it'll pull 287W on load. Don't believe me?

that's a really good temp, i get around 72c on load when running Crysis2 for several ours, that temp is pretty normal on load, and I'm running 2 7950'shttp://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/teehee.gif

Those temperatures are probably fine. My 460 idles at about 40c and goes up to 50c under load. The rest of my pc has similar temperatures, but slightly lower than my video card ofc.

Run a stressful game for a few hours, and look at the temperature every half hour. If the temperature maxes around 75c, there shouldn't be a problem. Even if it goes higher, it still just depends on the graphics card's heat resistance.
