It is similar to Elephantiasis or Proteus Syndrome if I remember correctly. You might have heard about the man, his name was Joseph Merrick. Look it up, the movie released in the 80's is excellent but very sad. He lived a sad sheltered life. Likely the same as this man.

The Elephant Man was based on a true story it is a sad and heart breaking movie.
