512gb ssd's are out (:

Recommended Posts

Hey did you know that the new 512gb ssd's are out now, and am quite excited about them, sense they are the fastest out of them all, not to mention the size is good enough for a install of windows and enough storage to shake a stick at. I'm very tempted replace my Momentus ssd hybrid with one of these awesome ssd's http://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/thumbsup.gif

I'm considering going with OCZ which i currently own, but the one i want is out of stock at the moment, and high demand, which is actually a good thing.

So what do you think, installing windows on a ssd a good idea or bad idea.

good review on this one, price is better then the OCZ, was on sale.

Of course this wont happen until the middle of march http://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/teehee.gif

...I just bought a 256GB one for $150 - Right before they sold out! Sure, 512 definitely is the size I'm looking for, but at this point perhaps it would be better to work on bringing down the cost of producing SSDs rather then making them bigger and faster. They already outperform HDDs at their current speed, so now they just need to make them affordable and at feasible sizes. Edited by ziitch

I am pretty sure there have been 512gb ssd's for a while, or at least since the agility 3 was released, could be earlier. Commercially available there are also 1tb drives (like this) and PCI-express ssd's (like this) if you have a huge wallet burning a hole in your pocket or a company that allows you to write them off as a business expense .

I would say installing windows on an ssd is a good idea. I have it installed on my 480gb agility 3 and I notice the difference every day in boot time, application load time and responsiveness and game load times  .

i only have a 128gb. couldnt afford a 256gb at the time and i was impatient lol. but i have Windows and several games on mine (with about 30gb left) makes a difference in both! but im spoiled now. going to a PC without one can be a huge drag lol.

I know that, but the transfer speeds have increased, and the size has decreased in price allot sense then, even a first generation ssd had its limits. it may have been out for awhile, but ssd's have advanced allot. What caught my attention was the transfer rate. My OCZ only goes as high as 140mb per second on firewire. Which is good, but not as fast as that http://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/blink.gif

a 512gb ssd would have cost around 1000$ when i purchased my first.

Transfer rate doesn't really matter for SSD, their performance is determined by more esoteric metrics such as block reallocation efficiency, cache scheduling and resulting IOPS at realistic QD in simultaneous read and write. Transfer rate is just something manufacturers can compete on.

It's capped by interface, so firewire can't go high, basically most SATA 2 SSD have 150-280 MB/s, most SATA 3 have 400-550 MB/s, it's not really a factor. Vertex 3 actually claims higher transfer rate than the newer one.

In practice there's very little difference between the effect of SSD on PC performance, even installing the same program on Intel X25-M versus Revo 3 X2, it's hard to notice the difference.

Except when used for caching, that's where it starts to show.

Crucial M4 is a nice choice actually, it has lower peak transfer rates than Vertex and Agility (both 3 and 4), but Crucial drives are good at practical performance and have more stable firmware; OCZ can be a bit buggy.
