Issues starting Xcom2 base game with Nexus mods enabled

I'm not aware of if a crashlog is generated or where it would be located, and so cannot currently supply.

I have been testing this myself to try and fix but no luck so far and wanted to post this in hope that someone may know as I cannot find the same issue and want to document this.

from what i've looked into, if I launch with a single mod, 870MCSSHOTGUN the game would crash. same if I load all selected mods I set up for the game.

as a test I tried downloading a few mods from the steam workshop. example here is the Evac All mod for base game. I noticed I had duplicates so worked perfect as a test. when loading the workshop version, the game would run just fine, whether it be through steam and enabling the mod, or the alternate Xcom 2 mod launcher that seems popular and better than vanilla launcher.

as far as I can tell, the issue seems to be that the mods being stored in the Vortex staging area are somehow causing an issue where the game freezes then crashes immediately on start.

working on it more it's even stranger as other mods don't show up even in the mod loaders, despite being put there in the folder with the others, and even done so manually.

hanks for the help Dragon. sadly you were right and this doesn't help much, but it is interesting as I can see that in the startup it is loading mods that are not showing in any of the launchers. additionally it looks like there are corrupt textures not fixed by validating the game so far.

don't see a crash log generated, guessing since it technically freezes and stops working and not crashing. don't see too much wrong with my limited experience.

the only two things I see that may cause the issue are lines [0013.23] & [0013.38]

I believe that launch.log will record events for all installed mods it finds, not just those which are enabled.

When there's a crash there's usually a "crash detected" event written and the event immediately preceding that can give a clue.

As the last event written is around checking mods / DLCs I really think your issue is Vortex.

Not sure about your other errors. I don't have the SDK installed.

I have this:

[0007.50] Error: Corrupt texture [Texture2D XComEngineMaterials.borderGradientDashed]! Missing bulk data for MipIndex=0

I don't have the other texture errors or the X2AchievementTracker ones.

Maybe a Verify Files in Steam would help. I'd try without Vortex first though. From what I've heard it works for Skyrim and that's about it.

Thanks. I think I found the problem now with your help on this.

it looks like it's one of two things.

1: as you mention, there may be an issue with Vortex causing the game to freeze and crash. personally i'm doubtful of this one as I've used Vortex on Sims, fallout, skyrim State of decay, and several other games and never had this issue, but always possible Xcom has a dumb coding issue that doesn't work with it.

2: what seems more likely to me is that Vortex had issues unpacking the mods, or the mods were stored in a weird way. going through and doing it manually I found that the mods were stored inside of the DL folder. not sure if vortex installing them in this way would effect things in the game making it look for the mods in a loop.

either way it looks like installing manually has prevented the game freezing.
