noveltyh3ro
So I was wondering, could I use some songs like Archangel from Two Steps From Hell in my mod? Would I require special permissions or could I just insert it considering this is non-profit? Please help :)
TheVampireDante
From our own Terms of service: Absolutely no copyrighted work is to be used without permission of the original creator. This includes content from other games, from DLCs, music creators or from other file authors. This also includes members from countries that do not recognise copyright laws (such as Russia). Meaning: You would need permission from the copyright holder to use it - and I doubt you'd get to use it for free, even if you explained what it was for. Jason2112
Most "non-profit" do not have copyrights ... so ya. But if they do have any type of copyright then no. Always best to check with the creator. Also you can release anything and say you made it when you didn't ... Add a comment crediting the creator. Never hurts to ask them too. Some of the greatest inventions were copied from creators without copyrights.Keep in mind the copyrights laws have changed. A simple line like ... "All rights reserved" can be as valid as a copyright. Edited February 12, 2013 by Jason2112
noveltyh3ro
Thanks guys for helping me. Also (I'm kinda new to this legal stuff) The permission, can it be in any form as in, can it even be a simple answer "Yes" or "no" or does it have to be a big contract of usage? Non-profit works are still copyright to the author, unless they are public domain. QuoteAlso you can release anything and say you made it when you didn'tEither you meant to write "can't" here, or you are seriously misinformed.QuoteSome of the greatest inventions were copied from creators without copyrights.Seriously, are you trolling?QuoteA simple line like ... "All rights reserved" can be as valid as a copyright. It is not necessary to make any statement at all. Your work, your copyright. If you don't give express permission for your work to be copied then it must be assumed that you do NOT give permission. @killermn: I'd suggest that you look to use music that is either undisputably public domain or released under Creative Commons Attribution 3. Galacticat42
QuoteSome of the greatest inventions were copied from creators without copyrights.Seriously, are you trolling?I don't think as much trolling as he is confused with controversial fine lines. Facebook was thought of as a stolen idea.Steve Jobs 'stole' the credit for Apple when he didn't program a single line of MacOS.Bill Gates 'stole' DOS and had friends make Microsoft out of it when he took the credit. Point being those examples all had their trials in court and were all paid for one way or another. I do agree with you steve on all your other points, but I think Mr. Bad Advice here is just confused.

bben46
Most "non-profit" do not have copyrights ...Untrue - just publishing something - even posting on a forum creates a copyright. However - some people allow their work to be used freely. OR have assigned their copyright to someone else. Just because something is published by a non profit organization does not remove the copyright. Example - the Red Cross is a non profit - but if you try to use their emblem without their permission you could be sued - Like most non profits they do allow most of their published stuff to be used freely though.
