Mayfly53
It utterly butchered my system too, though I didn't notice at first, until I realised the touch screen had stopped working, at which point I realised oh so many other things. Fortunately, I had the foresight of creating a restore point before running the executable. Really, I refuse to believe the mod author had this program being used on all the computers "in their business". I can understand some of the things it did, such as disabling ClearType, Aero, Icon thumbnails and window preview to save on VRAM, and some of the startup services, but it was far too aggressive. They really shouldn't have expected it to work on so many computers. CCleaner does the same thing as this, but has control and doesn't ruin things. The thing that upsets me the most, however, is my own stupidity for actually downloading and running the file. I guess I've become too lax about my security; this was certainly a good wake up call, if nothing else.
Jason2112
It looks to be advance settings from the programs ... Advanced SystemCare 5 and CCleaner.Suggest installing both and running. Both are uninstallable. Both would deal with what has been changed too and have the power to reset.
Jason2112
Most likely a before and after snapshot, transferred to a script to auto set registers.Clever ... not very generic.
fluffyzerg
Chances are, the person who made the mod had good intentions and had created what HE thought was a good tool to use for... the computers of a particular setup that he tailored it for. But computers are not one size fits all, and each install / combination of programs and required services vary a LOT, and what works on one will screw up another, big time. And anything that edits the registry or turns off services without letting you see before hand what all its going to remove so you can check and uncheck as you need, is a big red flag.If your curious about a program (and heaven knows I was quite curious and hovered my pointer over the download a few times), absolutely create a restore point before you attempt anything.. and try it on a less important computer if you have multiple ones available. I've got an older laptop that I use for a test bed of random stuff that catches my attention but with red flags hehe, poor thing has gone through quite a few reformats, restores and much yelling at.Sadly you cant wave a magic wand (program) and have it turn your computer into a powerhouse. The safest thing to do, if you have the patience is start looking online for various reputable sites that detail window services for the different Windows Versions, what they do, what ones you can safely turn off or fiddle with, and just slowly go thru and turn a few off at a time, so that if somethin occurs that you didnt want.. you know exactly what change caused it and can hopefully revert it. I'll Edit, after further reading.... I dont think the intentions were malicious they were just harmful by lack of real knowledge.. so mostly just big time irresponsible. Burnout122812
For those who didn't have a "system restore point" you have my sympathies. Like I told him he should have put that at the top of description page.
Oddjob83
Thank god i finally found proof that this mod even exsisted on the nexus, by the time i figured it actually screwed my system up, the mod was removed entirely. I even DL'd it and waited to see feedback from everyone else and a couple days after that it was on the front page with a bunch of endorsements so i figured it was safe, as i havent done a good cleaning of my computer in 2 years since i built it. luckily I did have a System restore point, and everything seems to be running normaly again. crap like this should not be allowed on the nexus. I broke one of my own rules of stupid internet surfing (afer having fixed stupid crap like this professionaly for years), and DL'd a programe I though was a "quick fix" and i didnt even expect anything more than a faster startup. thats what i get for being lazy I suppose. Koutsorugi
If anyone is having trouble reverting there fonts back to normal (You may notice that your font seems extremely thin and a bit illegible at times) Go to Control Panel Fonts Adjust Cleartype text Enable it. Go through the wizard. Your font should look as it used too. (This was on Windows 8, should be rather similar with 7)
AESamuel
I'm having trouble too, I can't see previews of my picture files in windows explorer. In folder options the checkbox for "always show icons, not thumbnails" has disappeared. If I go into advanced performance options and tick "show thumbnails, not icons" and click ok then go back into the menu it is unticked! I've tried running ASC and CCleaner and also mardoxx's fix and none of those worked. I don't have a system restore point either! argh!
jet4571
Rule 1. Never trust anything that tweaks or changes the windows registry unless its a standard install or uninstall.Rule 2. Make a restore point before doing any major cleaning.Rule 3. Make a restore point and backup if possible before using any program that does major cleaning and tweaks or changes the registry. Those 3 rules are priceless lol. Anyone wanting to change services and do some of those tweaks... DO IT MANUALY!!!! heres a guide for you: http://www.blackviper.com/ There are others but this one is trusted by many professionals and incredibly indepth. AESamuel
In the end even though it was only a thumbnail problem I decided it was better safe than sorry and I've done a re-installation of windows. I've learned some valuable lessons here.
