I'm currently working on the Glacier City mod but it's coming to a point where i can't help very much... :( so i've been thinking on a new lands project and this time I really want it to have some major ideas because with the glacier city it was hard to intergrate your own ideas with the whole land being icey with no farm land etc... I have no idea what it's gonna be called, where it's gonna be, what the climate is gonna be, why the player finds it, what the story is, the main quest or anything else! this is a very much get lots of people together to think up ideas and slap 'em together! so if you have any ideas on any of those things or more! dolalmoth Posted December 29, 2008 Share Posted December 29, 2008 I've always wanted to do something like this. I would say you could 'count me in' but I will warn you I am easily distracted. Not to mention my cs crashes every time I try to add dialogue. I would recommend using some sort of heightmap editor outside of the construction kit. I would recommend either fractal world explorer or terragen. Then use a program like TESAnnwyn to import the hieghtmap into an esp. And then I noticed that you're a veteran and probably know how to do all this. But again I like the idea of adding an entire continent to oblivion. So count me in until I get distracted. I agree, the story is just too tight...a little too dry, and hell i'm the one that made it...good luck! and go for tropical! (u should use the worldspace though, its still a really good shape) and then you can make the lands around it like you wanted...I've gotten like 0 responses from people, so i'm all ready to jump into a card game project which are MUCH more fun, and easy than these mods...I think i throw in the proverbial modding towel really, not very much worth my time to do all this and not make any progress you know? I'll call if i need you! whats lore friendly btw? also dolalmoth your hired! any ideas on the land? i'm thinkin very tropical but a nice big desert? with cacti and creatures and stuff, this could make a completely new cave experience too. now some ideas to work on... what are we going to call this place? how does the player find out about it (helps the name for example if it's an island) and also what shape is this place going to be? because I'm not to bad with the heightmap editor now. :biggrin: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Vagrant0 Posted December 31, 2008 Share Posted December 31, 2008 Not to poach or anything, but the Colored Rooms project is still here, and has been making some slow progress (can't expect much between 3 active members, work, school, and real life). As the Colored Rooms project aims to add new lands to the game, which can be used by other mods, it does technically fit with the sort of thing you wanted to do. In particular, there's a room, "white canyon" which is an arctic area, and has the same basic concept that you were wanting to do, while having both a background, and means of getting there. In truth, I have been trying to find associate groups who I could entrust to help work on parts of the mod, but incorporating some of the main ideas of the project within the mod. As this might provide a basis for what you want to do, and had previously had some interest in the project, this might be the answer you were looking for. I believe there is an older description of the White Canyon on the project forums, but some things could certainly be worked out. I plan to prepare the basic part of the worldspace myself sometime before the end of january, but can probably make it a higher priority if you were willing to join forces. You should totally go for some sort of water world...if we werent doing ice, I'd do water (mysterious since i'm a fire-sign leo...:-)) you dont neccessarily have to have it BE underwater, but you could go for a sort of atlantis if you wanted... the people there would worship water in their religion. However, such a place would require some water magic i think... hard animations! what i wouldnt give for a tidal wave spell in this game...!!! How is blending one idea into the other, and having some basis to work from, more work? I'm not saying to do a mod in addition to your mod, saying to combine efforts to get a single project more done. You're pretty much in the same boat we are. You've spent time on this mod, making resources, working out things, but realize that you probably won't be able to finish on your own, and don't want to make all that work go to waste. I'm certain that some of the concepts and designs that you want to do could be incorporated into what I'm working on. And likewise, some ideas, knowledge, and work I've done could be altered to fit with your mod. That is the beauty of having a fairly obscure lore base to work from. You want to make this place of ice and snow, I need a place of ice and snow. You have trouble getting things done in your mod, I have trouble getting things done in my mod. Why not work together? As for the idea of an aquatic area. Unfortunately, most pathing underwater is non-existant, and can be rather taxing on the game. You could have some nice sunken ruins if you have some water creatures to work with them, but a whole city under water doesn't work so well. The overall idea of having an area of small islands in a vast sea however is one I have also thought of doing, the problem is really the matter of getting it done. Have enough trouble finishing a fairly small area, as is. Then there's swamps, deserts, and a few other outlandish places. exanimis Posted December 31, 2008 Share Posted December 31, 2008 VagrantO, you are right about the different areas being a pain in the a$$, my mod has an entire continent that starts in low level swamps that are barely above sea level to an Ice shelf high in the mountains of the north. Each of the five kingdoms had to be separated by mountain ranges and each had to have their own terrain. I also have twelve islands, rivers, canyons and etc. There is also a sunken city off the coast but it is in ruins and no one lives there. Pathing in the water is a pain (I had to path the sunken garden in my first mod) and I don't plan of very much pathing for this sunken city, just enough so that a companion will not be left behind. The problem that I've found with places like deserts and ice shelves and grassy plains is that the distant lands don't always show and you can see the end of the quad at certain times. You can overcome this by making the area slightly hilly but even then you may see the end of the quad when at the top of a hill. The thing about armageddon818 quitting, he isn't quitting but rather concentrating on his real life priorities. I hope that he continues to mod but I can understand that real life is more important.
