evilneko
Hi all, first post on the nexus forums, though I've been loving the Fallout 3 and Oblivion mods and made a few comments on them. :thanks: to the skilled modders out there. My question has nothing to do with mods though. As evidenced in my title, I'm getting a new laptop soon, and I'd kinda like to get one able to run Oblivion. This new laptop will be a replacement for my current one, which was so laggy I never made it past the character creation screen. Here are the vital specs on my old laptop: Athlon 64x2 1.9GHz2GB DDR2nVidia GeForce 8200M G, 256MB This *censored* can't even run Black and White 2 respectably. It can, however, run WoW just fine, thus my friend's buying it from me. :) I'm curious as to what people have had success with, so I can have a baseline for my shopping. evilneko
Just got back from Fry's. Man, there were so many laptops with stinkin' Intel graphics chips, it's sickening. Oddly enough it was the cheaper ones that had actual ATI GPUs, though none of the laptops I looked at had >256MB video. Best video card/chip I saw was a Radeon X1250, on a $400 emachine, of all things. CPU was an Athlon 2650E, which a quick google search turns up as a single-core 1.6GHz 64bit chip. I did like the size of the laptop, which is smaller than my old one, but it just sounds a bit too wimpy. IMO, a brand new laptop should run circles around my secondary desktop, a Sempron 3100+, something this emachine clearly can't do. (Obviously, I don't play Oblivion on that Sempron. I've got a Phenom for that. ;) Though it's down with bad memory right now. :() The only other interesting one I saw was a Toshiba, IIRC, with an Athlon X2 TK55, a dual-core running 1.8GHz--actually slightly slower than my old laptop's 1.9. :( It did have a Radon x1200, 256MB. Googling shows the Radon Xpress 1200/1250 to be very weak. I'm probably just plain screwed. Not going to find one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. VincentAlliath
I just recently got a new laptop, so I decided to be a smartass and see if it would run Oblivion. It has a 128MB graphics card, 2GB RAM, 1.66Ghz Processor, and it runs Windows Vista. It only lags slightly in Oblivion, and that's only when I have LOADS of NPCs on the screen. Frankly, your old one should run it just fine.
evilneko
Curious. I suppose I could try it again. I never really got into the game proper last time. I stopped at character creation.

Ethre
The above laptop is more than you'll need . . . But quite a nice one. :) There is a decent selection of laptops out now with Nvidia 8000 series cards, or ATI 3000s. The first question to answer though: "What can you afford or are you looking to pay?"
rladngus
I have a DELL XPS M1530 with the following specs: Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 1) 32-BIT*Intel Core 2 Duo (2.4 Ghz)nVidia GeForce 8600M GT, 256 MB*9-Cell Battery4GB DDR2 RAM*Because it's a 32-bit, my pc uses only a max RAM of 3GB, so the extra GB that's left is being used as Shared Memory for my video card. Basically, my Video Card technically has a memory of 256 MB + 1 GB. With these specs, I can run Oblivion almost on the max (shadow filtering is set on low, anti-aliasing is off because I use HDR lighting for Arthur Natural Environment mod, and I set shadow from grass and trees off, as I see no need for this). BTW, I have Qarl's Texture Pack 3 Mod installed, which is pretty impressive that my laptop can still run the game smoothly with nearly all graphic options maxed out. I'm quite satisfed with this new laptop. THe only two complaints I have is that:1. Dell doesn't ship 64-bit PC's, which at the time I bought this, I didn't know the different versions would affect RAM2. It's ridiculously expensive, even with holiday sales and coupons (was originally nearly 2K USD, but got it for ~1.5K)
maYuYang
@evilnekoIt depends on if you want to use mods on your notebook, or not. If yes, that processor is way too slow. I recommend the Intel Dualcore T9600(not sure about the name now, also, I do not know AMD's counterpart to that one), it has 2.8GHz, which should handle most of the mod-processing.And as Thebigba mentioned, your GPU should have 512 MB. evilneko
I ordered an HP with a T3200 (Dual core 2GHz), 2GB DDR2, and a 512MB GeForce 9600M GT. Best video card I could get without jumping way up in price--this one was only $680 after tax and with free shipping. Vista 64-bit pre-installed, may switch that to XP if Vista proves troublesome. Actually, may switch it anyway. I found Vista extremely annoying, even with UAC turned off, but enough about that. I never got around to trying Obli on my old one again, I sold it to a friend to partially fund the purchase of my new one. The new one's actually waiting for me at the local FedEx center, I'm just waiting for rush hour to die down a bit. Much as I'd love to go pick it up, I hate rush hour traffic. My old one lagged so hard on the character creation screen I simply did not want to see what it'd do in-game. During my shopping I found a neat little website called notebookcheck.com, which had some reviews and benchmarks of various laptop graphics cards. As far as mods go, I do have quite a few custom armors/clothes loaded, as well as some others. I could easily do without most of them.
