LordSarcasm
I'll be honest that right now my save file is incredibly unstable. I know it's ill-advised but there's just so many great mods that I love playing with. Anyway, I've grown unfortunately well accustomed to my game crashing (again I know it's a very bad idea to keep going on like this) but this time was quite different. I'm heading up to the Shrine of Azura with the broken star, but every time I reach the top of the stairs the game crashes to the desktop. Every other time this has ever happened I just return to the desktop. This time however, I get an annoying windows pop up that the game has stopped working. I have never once seen an error message of any kind when the game has crashed for me before.
Jaradin
To be honest, this happened to me when my save file had gotten too bloated. I'd been having a few CTDs but straight to the desktop, then I started having CTDs with that error message. Figured out that my save file was too bloated, and even after I uninstalled all of my mods, waited a month indoors to reset the game, and tried to clear my save file of undesirable scripts, it still managed to crash with that error message. My suspicion is that your unstable save file has reached its end. Sorry to say, but it's probably time to start over. :(
LordSarcasm
It's certainly a horrific possibility. But I am a quite sure it's a problem with the quest itself, because just now the same problem occured when I went to Winterhold to try the other option in the quest. The second I walked onto the porch of the inn the game crashed with the same message before I even walked through the door. But when I just waited at the bottom of the Shrine without going to the top the game was perfectly fine. Jaradin
If you can determine that it's occurring in the same place/circumstances then you're safe of my problem. However, if it occurs at random, that hypothesis could still hold true. Keep experimenting, and don't give up hope. But this is why I make back-ups of my saves every so often, especially before I install risky mods. When I had that problem I just loaded back to a save where the stutter wasn't noticeable and I was fine. Only lost about ten hours of gameplay. LordSarcasm
Well I know it IS NOT a mod incompatability. I went through and got rid of them all. I just came out of Bruca's Leap Redoubt and the exact same thing happened. The only other files besides the main Skyrim file are Dawnguard and The High Resolution Patch. I can't risk turning them off because DLC's are main files and the game won't even start without them. And I'm only up to something like save 120 or something so a bloated file is unlikely. I may indeed need to start a new game again. It' just makes me thougouhly pissed off at all of the real world time I just wasted over the past couple weeks without even a completed main quest to show for it.
