TES4LODGen causing consistent crashes

In a previous post I mentioned how I was seeing consistent crashes on a new laptop as soon as I exited the tutorial dungeon (and indeed, even if I used the console to go to any exterior cell, in Tamriel or Shivering Isles). I thought this was due to a corrupt PyFFI'd Oblivion - Meshes file. But that isn't the case.

I finally have discovered that the LOD files created by TES4LODGen are causing the crashes. As soon as I delete the DistantLOD folder it generates, the game is completely stable. If I leave even a single LOD file in that folder, I get crashes again.

I thought this might be due to my simultaneous use of TES4LL (to generate meshes and textures for LOD), or LandMagic (to fix land tears). So I tried turning both off and rerunning TES4LODGen. Same result. I also had the same result whether I used the version of TES4LODGen x86 available on this site, or the latest version (4.0.3 x64) from GitHub.

I've tried Conscribe, Message Logger, and Crash Logger to see what's going on - but none of them report anything. I'm not using RAEVWD or any kind of LOD-heavy mod, either...so maybe I'm better off just forgetting about generating LOD files.

Has anyone else run into this? I saw several reports of similar issues in the TES4LODGen thread, and via Google, but never any answers. (And yes, I posted in that thread as well.) The only other idea I have is to try disabling mods...but that defeats the purpose.

Pretty standard, I think. I'm not using ENB or any kind of extender; I just have HDR with Very High settings enabled, with a few tweaks to the config file (for example, to increase the maximum preload limit). I also have several OBSE plugins running including Stutter Remover, NVAC (New Vegas Anti Crash, which also works on Oblivion), Engine Bug Fixes, etc. Default Nvidia settings. I could try regenerating the DistantLOD files while the default Config file is in place, with or without HDR, but I think I tried that already and it didn't help. I can't remember honestly; I tried several things...

I finally figured it out. The problem was not TES4LODGen at all. Instead, it was because I had used the "PyFFI Optimization Kit" prior to running TES4LODGen. The Kit had created bad _far meshes, which TES4LODGen then tried to incorporate into the game.

During research I also learned that the PyFFI Optimization Kit is out of date; PyFFI itself comes with better scripts for Oblivion. I ran those scripts instead, and now everything works perefctly!

I placed a warning on the PyFFI Optimization Kit Forum based on this.

That one was nasty for sure and it is good that you solved it. I would had never figured that one out but I guess you knew what Puffi Optimization was capable of as I do not use it so I know nothing about it?

Yep, fortunately! This is (I think) the fourth time I have installed it, going through all the steps with BOSS and Wrye Bash and everything else, so I think I have it almost down to an art form by now. Still, this one was tough to track down; I must not have used the Kit last time, or I used an older version of PyFFI that didn’t have issues.
