Redeemed Life
I don't want to miss the opportunity to get +5's when I level, but I'm having a hard time understanding what skills i need to get up for that to happen. I'm about to walk out of the "never-turn-back-sewer" and here are my current skills (major 7): Blade: 31Light Armor: 36Marksman: 31Mercantile: 40Security: 30Sneak: 33Speechcraft: 40 Custom Class: LarcenistMajor Skills: Speed & Agility. Now, I have the "It's time to level up" icon, but when I do I only get +2's and +3's. What do I have to level to get +5's?
Redeemed Life
I've just started playing, too. So no spoilers! :o
Sarya
You get 5 when you advance in skills dependent on ability in question 10 or more times. Any skills, minor or major. But getting 10 in any major gives you a level. So, to get 5/5/5 on level up you need to advance 10 on major and 20 on minor skills at least, and that needs to be distributed amond 3 different abilities at least 10 on each. I advice raising endurance first. And do minor skills before major, I think any skills advance doesn't count after you receive level-up message. Forces you to keep doing things you would not do or want do other way for the sake of gaining the max points. So, think on get hid of it at all and for such I suggest the Kobu's Character Advancement System, and enjoy the plenty of default ways to level your character, one to satisfy each taste (more yet if you are a power user and teak it's functions and variables as explained on it's detailed documentation). This mod is well know and integrates seamless even with the several UI over there (dark UI, Darn, etc). Edit PS: The vanilla leveling is so awkward than the "better" way to build your character of choice is to never put as main the skills you will use the most, instead put there some of easy control. For example, if a fighter put conjuration, alteration, illusion... and when you think is time to level up keep summoning some skeletons to practice your blade, block... keep casting low cost shield and light spells, etc
GenghisKhanIT
Every skill has a governing attribute, I will list them at the end of the post for readibility. You get the opportunity to increase a +1 on an attribute each two increments on skills governed by it, be them major or minor. This means that if, for example, you want to increase +5 in Strength in this level up, you will need to increase +10 total in all skills governed by Strength, in any combination, so for example +10 Blade OR +3 Blade +5 Blunt +2 Hand to Hand both are equally good. All this must be accomplished BEFORE leveling up, which means increasing 10 major skills. Once you get 10 increases in any combination of your major skills (the icon appears on your screen) the attribute modifiers for that level up are locked even if you don't level up immediately and you are already gathering skill points for the next level up.Luck governs no attribute and can only be increased by +1 each level up. If you really want to level up maxing your attribute increases, this can be veeery annoying, so I second nosisab's suggestion to install a player leveling mod like KCAS (Kobu's), but in your shoes I would not do this on my first game. Getting +2/+3 for your attributes each level up is fine and it will get you to the 100 upper limit on your favorite attributes slowly, which is not bad: at that limit you have no reward in leveling up and it becomes quite boring. Moreover, skill perks and gameplay techniques are often more important than attributes. E.g. even if you have 100 Agility but try to sneak in plain sunlight to a facing foe you will be detected. Attribute -> Skills========= ======Strength -> Blade, Blunt, Hand to HandEndurance -> Block, Armorer, Heavy ArmorSpeed -> Light Armor, Acrobatics, AthleticsAgility -> Security, Marksman, SneakIntellig -> Alchemy, Conjuration, MysticismWillpower -> Alteration, Destruction, RestorationPersonal -> Illusion, Speechcraft, MercantileLuck -> none Hope the above clears it up. Balakirev
You might also want to check out the Flexible Leveling mod, here at TES Nexus. It lets you select from several configurations of how easily you get that +5 to an attribute upon leveling: with only eight levels in an attribute-related subset of skills, or five, or three, etc. Personally, I find it far easier to manage than any number of leveling mods, and I've tried several. But I do agree with the last poster: Oblivion's innate system is a mess. And the shame is, Morrowind's worked fine. They didn't need to "fix" it.
