Zorkaz
Is it safe to convert an ESL to an ESP to edit it and then convert it back?
LucidLady
I've been wondering about this too.Sometimes mods get released only in ESL form, even though releasing it as an ESL-flagged ESP would be better.
Zorkaz
At least for editing it seems to be fine. The converted esl plays fine too.
YouDoNotKnowMyName
Keep in mind that doing this during a playthrough could be problematic. If you convert the ESL to ESP, edit it, and then convert it to an ESL again, the REF-IDs of some stuff might not be the same as before! That could be a problem ... But I don't know ...I am just trying applying what little knowledge I have ...
LarannKiar
As long as the pre-existing FormIDs don't change it absolutely is. Keep in mind that "Compacting" in CK can change these pre-existing FormIDs (it shouldn't if all the FormIDs in that .esp are already in the .esl FormID range but still...). Well, this is problematic though. To avoid this, you can change the FormIDs of the new records yourself in FO4Edit to fit in the .esl's FormID range (XX000000-XX000FFF since Game version v1.10.162). Then you can "Compact" your mod in the CK (but at this point it's not really necessary though). It's also important to have all the scripts in the folders where the CK can read them (as "loose files"). Otherwise a FormID can change but sometimes the CK forgets to attach the pre-existing scripts to the new FormIDs. I think the best practice is to keep an .esp version of your mod so you can edit that and then "Compact" it to an .esl again.
