DocterPain
Alright guys and gals It's time for me to upgrade my computer, only problem is, I don't know what to choose. My budget is around $400. BUT my dad is a computer wholesaler, so I get my parts cheaper then newegg. I only have a 32bit OS. So I would have to upgrade to fully utilize all the ram in either one of these machines. Should I go with an i5-3570 + 4gb ram + Mobo. or an FX-4300 or FX-6300 or FX-6100 + 8gb Ram + Mobo + win8 64bit. Both solutions would cost around $400, with the intel costing a bit more. My current specsCPU: Core2Quad q6600 @ 2.4ghzMOBO: Asus P5ql ProRAM: 4gbGPU: Asus GTX 550ti OC @ 1060hz My main question is what is going to offer me the most performance boost? the AMD build or the Intel build. If I go with AMD I will be upgrading my CPU when steamroller is released, and I know that with the i5 the LGA1155 is now a dead board. I am also going to be upgrading my GPU soon, as this is just the beginning of my upgrade. I really only play heavily modded Skyrim (only game I really play). I also use photoshop, Unity3D, and others. What would you do? Oh, please, please, please do not let this descend into an AMD vs Intel fanboy war. Phalanx108
From the list, I suggest the FX6300 + 8GB setup. However, swap out the Win 8 for Win 7 x64. 7 is still leagues ahead of 8 for desktop usage.

The 775 is dead isn't it? and the 1155 is on its way, it's getting pretty old now, and I think this year is the last year for a processor on that socket? Am i completely wrong here? :) I will take a look for that i5 though. I'll see what my dad has available to him :) Thanks for the answers guys! Vecna6667
If you can, wait for haswell coming out this year if you still want to go intel. It should have an update path in the future where the Ivy Bridge cpus will be the end of LGA 1155. Haswell will be socket LGA 1150.

Vecna6667
Haswell have usb bug(maybe more) What bug would that be considering Haswell isn't out until June at the very least? Edited April 8, 2013 by Vecna6667
hoofhearted4
Haswell have usb bug(maybe more) What bug would that be considering Haswell isn't out until June at the very least?idk what Samadchaz is talking about because I havent been following Haswell, but just because it has not been released doesnt mean it hasnt been reported to have bugs. i bet the Chip has been done and has been in testing for awhile now. so If someone somewhere got a hold of a copy (like a developers kit if you will) and reported on it having USB bugs (illegally of course since there is no way the contracts of the Chip's use would allow public talk of it) then thats what he could be referring to. however, i feel like a USB bug would be more the fault of the Chipset/Mobo and not the actual CPU. but honestly Im not too knowledgable on CPUs and Mobos and archetecture and whatnot so its just an assumption :P

All news about Haswell's performance and bugs I've heard have been with engineering samples so I don't put much stock into that news until official release. I've just found the bug that was mention. Hawell had trouble exiting S3 sleep with a USB 3.0 device plugged in. The bug is described as "nuisance" and fixed by restarting the afflicted program. Also Intel has started the chipset changes to fix the bug. hoofhearted4
yea i assumed it would be a chipset issue and not a CPU specific issue. but he may have been referring to Haswell as the entire platform, since its getting a new chipset but yea lol. i hoipe Haswell flops only because i just bought an IB and i would feel better if Haswell sucked hahaha jk
