I also work in the IT business and we call such things "maintenance window" for our customers.

A maintenance window always has a definitive begin and an expected ending.

Maybe you can say when this "short term pain" is over (expected ending)?

 

btw: Communication with customers should never be underestimated.

Then the expected end may well be delayed.
