Hi everyone.

So I've been having a very frustrating night dealing with Skyrim. I didn't change a thing, hadn't played it for a couple days, then I try to play it tonight and nothing is working right. After a lot of hair pulling and reinstalling and tweaks I finally got most of the problems fixed, but there is one that, no matter what I do, I can't seem to fix.

I've used SKSE in past and I know how to install it properly and it's always worked for me up until now. Last night there were some major issues with it, mainly the skse_loader.exe suddenly disappeared from my Skyrim folder. I reinstalled it, but when I went to extract the proper skse files into the Skyrim folder I came upon a problem. It let me extract everything except for the skse_loader.exe. I find this very weird since the skse_loader.exe wasn't in the skyrim folder tonight when I checked, like I already said, and I didn't touch a thing or delete it until I had to do the reinstall. Now when I try to extract the skse_loader.exe into my Skyrim folder it says I don't have permission to do so.

As I said, I've used SKSE in the past and haven't changed anything so for the life of me I can't tell why it's telling me that I don't have permission to put that .exe into the Skyrim folder.

If anyone has any advice or has had the same problem themselves and knows of the solution I would really appreciate it. I'm unable to properly play with some of my favorite mods until I get SKSE working again.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply. I really appreciate it, especially since I really can't play Skyrim until I get this fixed.

I checked and I have full permission for all of those, but it keeps telling me I need permission or that access is denied. The really weird thing is that I can extract everything in the skse folder but the skse_loader.exe. And like I said, last night when I first checked the skyrim folder to see what was causing the problems, before I did anything, the skse_loader.exe was just gone. Everything else skse was there, but that .exe had just vanished like the computer deleted it itself. I don't think that's a coincidence that it was just gone and now I can't put it back in my folder, but I just can't figure out whats going on. I would've thought that uninstalling and reinstalling skyrim and uninstalling and reinstalling skse would have fixed the problem, but it didn't.

Do you have any other suggestions? And, by any chance, would any ini tweak be causing it or another skyrim related program like the skyrim performance monitor?

Hmm.

Just to be sure-- you are connected to steam, logged in, and when you right-click the steam icon, then click properties and choose the securities tab, you can see that you have all the permissions with a checkmark?

Same with Skyrim, NMM, and skse? (in my Windows 7, exe files I have designated to run as administrator have a little windows sheild on them)

Some people need to disable UAC entirely...that of course does add security risks.

(sorry, to hammer this, but if you are getting a message that you don't have permission, then it seems that somewhere there is a disconnect)

Also, have you checked your firewall settings to make sure that it is not blocking any of these apps? (or treating skse like a virus?)

Finally, are you certain you are using the correct skse version for your steam/skyrim patch?

I know you have done this before, and I do not mean to insult you, but I am trying to rule out things, so forgive me:

You are extracting and installing the files to your Program Files\Steam\Steamapss\common\skyrim? (where you find the TESV.exe file)? And using 7zip, not Winzip or anything else to extract?

Have you tried searching for the old missing (or misplaced?) skse_loader.exe file using Windows Search? Have you tried searching for and then removing all skse files before attempting to download/install the new one?

Have you tried a fresh download of skse on the chance that it somehow was corrupted during download?

Sorry I don't have a quick answer for you. It does seem very strange that a file would disappear, which is why I wonder about your firewall/AV maybe being involved. Let me know if any of this helps, and if not I'll keep thinking, or maybe someone else will notice this thread and have your answer.

Thank you again for the quick reply. It's very kind of you to take time helping me out and I really appreciate it. Believe me, your not insulting me. I know that your just trying to weed out what the cause is and like I said I really appreciate your help.

After reading your suggestions I thought it was my computer viewing skse as a virus because my malwarebytes and anti-vrius program were recently updated so I put skse on the ignore list, but still no luck. I definitely have all the correct permissions.

Although, I did find something interesting. I have administrative rights on my computer, but on another website I found that if you type netplwiz in the windows search box then you see a more in depth version of what your account type is and mine was administrative but also homeuser. When you have two like that the computer tends to give you permission for the lesser one so you don't get full administrative rights. So I changed it to being just administrative.

Granted, that didn't fix the problem either but its something to consider for the future. I just thought you might like to know that in case you run into a similar problem in the future.

What finally worked was disabling UAC entirely, putting skse_loader.exe into the skyrim folder and then enabling UAC again. So I got it fixed and it was your suggestion that did it. Again, thank you. I'm just not sure what went wrong in the first place. For me to have used skse in the past with no problem and to have not changed anything and then this happens just seems very odd to me. Hopefully, its fixed for good and won't happen again.

Anyway, thanks again. I really can't thank you enough. I was about to pull my hair out of my head and just give up. I've never been so frustrated with a skyrim problem before.

If you don't mind, I just have one more question.

The SKSE problem happened last night along with a slew of other problems, all at once, and I'm just concerned about what caused the major hiccup. First I couldn't load Wrye Bash. It kept telling me that it couldn't locate Skyrim and that I had to use to o-line to put in the correct path, but Skyrim was still installed in its usual folder and nothing had changed. Then BOSS couldn't detect Skyrim either. It would load the black screen that says loading masterlist, but instead it said BOSS encountered a critical error and would crash before I could read what the error was, but NMM still recognized Skyrim and worked fine. Then I tried to launch skyrim and it crashed before it even reached the main menu. That's when I noticed that skse_loader.exe was missing from the Skyrim folder and to answer your previous question I couldn't find that missing .exe anywhere.

Basically, nothing was working and it stopped working all once. Uninstalling and reinstalling Skyrim fixed all of the problems except for the SKSE issue which you helped me fix. I'm just wondering if you've ever heard of all those errors occuring at once and if so what causes them. I'd like to prevent something like from happening in the future.

Well, I haven't seen that, but I can imagine that it might be caused by a problem with your steam connection or if steam were in the middle of updating and somehow got corrupted. Or, as you mentioned, an update to your security software resetting things.

The only other idea is some kind of worm or virus causing general computer havoc. These are just guesses, though. I have never seen what you describe.

I am glad you have things running now. The comment you made about admin permissions though, made me think that you were equating having admin rights as a user (basically logging in as an administrator) was the same as giving admin rights to specific program files. Maybe I misunderstood, but if this is the case, I just want to clarify that even if you are logged in with administrator rights, you still need to use the right-click run as administrator thing on specific files. I know you have this working, I'm just mentioning it because if this is the case, you may be able to avoid turning of UAC entirely and just setting the admin properties.

Anyway, glad you have it all working!

Hey im having a strange issue with SKSE myself except pretty different. I keep coming across one issue or 2 issues like no matter what skyUI in my mod loader keeps saying that SKSE is not installed. And my biggest issue is that my side_loader.exe is not showing up as a .exe when I extract it or when I place it in the skyrin folder. This is even after I followed the instruction piece by piece for the install. So after I did some digging I noticed hat cause my problm; For some unknown reason my SKSE_loader.exe wont extract, so I cant place it in my folder or use it as a launcher. Ive downloaded the rar time and time again and uninstalled and reinstalled my game over and over again and still nothing. IDK why this is so because everything else from the file will extract.
Can anyone help me?

Did you launch from the skse launcher? You cannot launch from inside steam.

Okay, I've been searching for a solution to my "administrative permission' problem for two days. I've even been over this forum, re-installing skyrim from steam, and removing ALL of my mods and starting from scratch like someone kicked over your sandcastle that you SPENT HOURS ON!... sorry it's been frustrating...

But I thought I should share some information. My solution for finally getting that freaking skse_loader.ese onto the skyrim folder... was by renaming it something like "Unknown" and it worked!... Now I'm not a nerd, and honestly I thought tricking my pc like that was ridiculous. But if you of you really tech savy savants out there could explain how this is possible, I might sleep easier.
