A few questions regarding upgrades

Recommended Posts

So, I'm getting ready for an enormous hardware update: new motherboard, new CPU, new HDDs, but I've been wondering about my data. When I install a new(larger) hard drive, is it going to be possible to migrate my install and installs over to the new HDDs, or am I really going to have to re-install all my 500-odd GB of data, and re-build my entire grumpy cat meme folder?

I recommend installing the OS fresh on a new SSD.

Games will have to be reinstalled as well.

Then attach your old HDD to another SATA port and use it as data storage.

Old data will of course remain. If you've been storing everything in "my pictures" and such, you may need to move it for easier access.

What FMod said. or at least put C: (Windows) in its on partition (~60GB should be more then enough room)

however if you arent worried about Directory Structure and just want your stuff the exact same way it was (without putting Windows in its own Partition) you could just Clone your old HDD to the new HDD. when you get it, just plug it into your PC and run something like Clone Zilla or Parted Magic (which in itself runs Clonezilla lol) and it will clone your drive giving you the same exact stuff you had before. same paths and everything...its a clone :P
