Can't take it anymore... crashing, crashing, crashing!

Hello guys,

i really can't take it anymore. I think we all know Gopher and his Skyrim LPs on Youtube. I have to admit, i'm absolutely jealous of how stable his game runs! He can play for over an hour and his game still runs. I often can't play for 15 minutes without crashing.

I have almost the same mods like Gopher running, except for some more texture mods. But i really keep my eye on my VRAM usage and i always have a few houndred MB left.

I don't have a problem with crashing to desktop mid-game. When it crashes, it does while entering a building or when fast traveling. Then it just simply doesn't load the next stage and keeps stuck on the loading screen. Funny thing, my game isn't frozen in that moment. I can rotate the object on the loading screen, the music keeps playing, but it doesn't load the new stage.

I tryed almost everything, I completely uninstalled my game, started a new character, disabled almost every mod, but it keeps crashing. I really can't think of anything else to do, but maybe you have a last idea for me?

Here's my setup:

Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit

8 Gig RAM

GTX 670 OC

i5-3570K

Skyrim is on my SSD, all mods are on a HDD.

Of course i used BOSS and tested everything with TES5Edit.

Ok, i really hope you can help me with that! Skyrim is such a great game, and with SkyRe, it's even better! It would be a shame if i had to uninstall it, just because it is so unstabe and really unplayable.

Thank you very much!

Ghost

I would look into a background process grabbing the CPU for a few seconds and not releasing it soon enough. The game gets out of sync and just stops. Any VOIP, Autodefrag, IM, Skype, dropbox etc sees the loading and assumes you are not doing anything and tries to do something.

I hate to say this but a large suspicion falls on the Geforce 600 series video cards. 2 of my friends have these cards as well, (one has the 680, the other has the 690). They also get constant crashes in Skyrim and other games like Far Cry 3. The story is very familiar. They can't play for 10-15 minutes without a crash happening. I'm not saying all owners of the 600 series card experiences these problems, but I've seen and heard of way too many of these cases.

It seems to be related to the new technology incorporated into the cards such as the adaptive V-sync, and the dynamic GPU boost. These two features were first introduced with the 600 series and they've got tons of bugs and instability that nvidia didn't have time to iron out before release. There are also tons of forum threads with frustrated owners discussing this. Some of them had upgraded from a 500 series card, and when they put their old card back in, the problems disappear. If you have an older card lying around, give it a test.

I'm not impressed and really dissapointed after deciding on a gtx 670 (it's only the 2 gig vram) and was opting to even shoot for a 4 gig version even though I've had it since October. What to do in a situation like this, I mean you pay 400 or so for a card and expect a huge improvrment from a 560..just ranting.

That being said my setup is basically the same as yours Ghostrider but I can play for a quite a while no problems, although for what ever reason the only CTD that I have gotten since the latest patch is following hadvar in the beginning..he says "you still alive prisoner, stay close to me etc." then boom crash to desktop

I would suspect the issue is more likely caused by mods than by your hardware. The CTD and 'indefinite loading screen' symptoms you describe do not sound like those typically caused by GPU or driver issues. My system is far below your rig spec and I haven't seen a CTD in almost 2 months (180+ mods). If you want, you can post your BOSS log (recognized + unrecognized plugins, all in spoiler tags), and as much detail as you can about your Skyrim setup (ini settings, texture replacer mods without plugins that won't show up on a BOSS log, anything else you suspect to be relevant), and we'll let you know if we see something amiss. Of course one must first eliminate the possibility of mods as the cause of CTDs. And you can quickly and easily determine if mods are causing the problems, just deactivate or uninstall them.

But in the case of both my friends with the geforce 600 series video card, the freezes and crashes happen with NO mods installed whatsoever. The crashes started happening immediately once the game was installed, just like the crashes they experience with some other games. They're just thankful they can advance in the game in 15 minute increments by making constant saves and falling back on those saves once a crash happens. If they forget to save frequently, they sometimes have to redo a whole part of a quest.

Thanks for your help already!

1) Cleaning: download TES5Edit and clean the plugins flagged by BOSS containing 'dirty edits' (including the DLC and patch esm's) There are instructions on that link as well as a video by Gopher if you need them. You'll need to remove identical master entries as well as undelete/disable deleted references.

2) Maintenance: go through the BOSS log and look for error messages, such as

betterinns.esp Active
[*]Warning: This file contains 1 deleted NavMesh record that TES5Edit cannot repair automatically and it may cause problems with your game. NavMesh deletions should be reported to the mod author. A guide to repairing NavMesh deletions with TES5Edit is located here.

There are 3 or so of these plugins in your load order. I don't use these mods and never checked out their records so I don't know if this is a generic error message for mods that edit default game navmesh or if they really did contain messed up navmesh records. You can check them out yourself in TES5Edit, or to be on the safe side you can uninstall or at least disable these mods. You mentioned that one of the 'symptoms' of your CTD is when you try to transition into an interior cell. If any of those interior cells involve the cells edited by these mods (inns, etc.), they might just be the culprit (at least for those CTD).

3) SkyRe: I don't use SkyRe, but I keep reading about users with problems, finding error records in the ReProccer, etc. Since I don't use it I don't know if these 'issues' are caused by the ReProccer or if they are caused by the users (who did not configure the xml settings properly). But you might want to look through the ReProccer records in TES5Edit to see if there are any error or 'null' records to make sure everything is in working condition.

4) Conflicts: This is not related to your CTD but you have a number of 'give more stuff to NPCs' plugins like the cloaks mods, winter is coming, immersive armour, etc., so you will need to download Wrye Bash to generate a Bashed Patch that will merge the conflicting leveled list edits.

5) Rogue mods: the plugins not recognized by BOSS, each time you run BOSS, they go to the bottom of the load order and override other plugins in cases of conflicting records. Their load order positions need to be arranged manually. The first thing you should do is to remove the optional plugins for the cloaks of skyrim mod, since they are not active and you are not using them anyway. Once you use a Bashed Patch to merge conflicting leveled lists, you will have no need for them ever (unless you actually want to punish NPCs from depriving them of cloaks...). The SkyRe optional plugins, you can load them according to guidelines from the author. The rest of the plugins not recognized by BOSS, ideally you should check their records in TES5Edit to see if they contain conflicting records with the other plugins in your load order. If they don't then you can load them anywhere above your compatibility patches (e.g. Bashed Patch, ReProccer). If they do contain conflicting records, you will need to decide who should 'win' the contest of conflicts and arrange their load order positions accordingly (plugins loaded later override conflicting edits by plugins loaded earlier). Afterwards, you can use the BOSS Userlist Manager to set custom rules for those plugins so their load order positions will not be reset every time you run BOSS.
