4 bank ram faster than two bank ram

i have a funny constellation with my pc memory config.

 

i use 4 memory modules a 16GB ram corsair vengeance ddr4 3200 cl16 on a gigabyte 570 AMD board (all 4 dimm slots, 64GB). these modules work nicely together and stable for daily work with 3533 cl16 and 1.41V.

 

i just decided to sell 32GB because i bought it cheap (45E per 16GB) it seems a good time to sell.

now the problem:

no matter what i try with only two modules. i can not find a config with the same stable overclock at 3533 mhz or more with only using two of the modules regardless how i combine them and what dimm slots i use (A or B).

has anyone experienced such a weird ram clock problem ? i always thought that 4 memory modules work less stable than 2 and that using only 2 dimm slots is better for good overclock. im kind of surprised.

That's interesting, and I have no idea why it should happen that way. One would think that the number of filled slots wouldn't matter. Two should be just the same as 4. I might be tempted to test the ram, and make sure both sticks don't have any issues.

 

Check your MB manual, I would expect they have a specific order to populate the rams slots, depending on how many you have, to get the most out of them.

 

Just out of idle curiosity though, are you overclocking the entire system? Or just the RAM? If it's just the RAM, I wouldn't expect you would see much of a performance difference between the two settings. Or even stock settings for that matter.... RAM is FAST. :D

thanks for your suggestions. i checked the manual and some available reviews of ram and motherboard. still have no clue why this happens.

the ram overclock is the only overclock since ryzen is very limited. i can manage a prime stable overclock of my ryzen 3700x up to 4,375 ghz all core @ 1,37V but it is not worth the little gain compared to the loss of a silent system. running it with 4,275 Ghz all core and 1.21V as the sweet spot seem to me a good compromise. all values above have to be covered with significant higher core voltage.

i doubt this setting somehow influences the ram setting. the ram overclock seems to change things significantly at least in synthetic benchmarks and it is close to the ryzen ram sweet spot but the difference is not ground breaking. it is just annoying that it does not work with two modules

Sometimes, I think computers do that kind of thing just out of sheer cussedness. :D

 

I am not big into overclocking though. For my purposes, I don't really need to. My system is mean enough to run whatever I care to, rather well. :) We shall see if that still holds true when the next TES/FO games come out. :D I AM trying to upgrade my GPU though...... we have been able to get some of the Nvidia 30 series cards at work, but, given the prices at the moment, my boss isn't real inclined to sell one to me at the employee price, when he can make a couple hundred bucks PER CARD on the open market. :D

i sold my 2080 ti for very good price i thought i would never get and now i'm waiting for the time after the mining boom. this may last...

i'm happy that i have my notebook in the meantime with a 1060 card as my backup pc and still capable to play some games.

a 30x0 card would be nice but not for the current price. availability and prices are just a sad joke.

Trouble is, from what I have seen, with the values of various crypto-currencies remaining high.... I don't see the boom being 'over' any time soon. And we also have the supplies issues with the chips. So long as the pandemic is still an issue, that's gonna be a problem too. We have been able to get various cards at work, even for reasonable prices. And we can sell them at a pretty serious profit...... (which we do.... yep, scalpers.....) I am waiting for our next round of 3060Ti's to come in, and I will likely buy one..... Should last me for the foreseeable future. :D

 

I don't see vid card prices coming to to anything I would consider 'reasonable'.... for at least a few more months. If you have vid cards of recent vintage you want to get rid of, now is certainly the time. We are getting really good prices on even 570's and such. :D

so you can be lucky to have that source. i`m planning to wait at least until october or even next year.

i was happy to get a 570 4gb for 160e - rediculous but even cheap compared to current prices in my region.

my 1060 notebook and the 570 are sufficient for my needs but 4k gaming is the past from now on.

Probably a good plan...... :) I think the longer you wait, the more likely you will find cards for good prices. Of course, by next year, the Nvidia 50 series (and 40 series) cards will likely have come out too. :D

seems to be a bad idea to reduce from four bank to two bank.

 

but this article also says that ram speed can be configured higher with just two banks what is exactly the opposite as in my case.
