Crash on new game

Something that happened only after I added Dragonborn DLC is that I can't start a new game, unless I disable/uninstall mods. What is curious is that if I disable every mod, even the Unofficial mods, I get a huge amount of Papyrus errors! With only Skyrim.esm, Update.esm, Dawnguard.esm, HearthFires.esm and Dragonborn.esm in my load order, nothing else, I get this:

This is right after a clean install of Skyrim 1.9.32.0.8 with all 3 DLCs. Is this a result of cleaning my .esm files? I followed the instructions in the TES5Edit tutorial meticulously.

Scripts are always going to be present in Save games that contained a script intensive mod. Disabling the plug ins won't get rid of the scripts. The only way to be 100% clean of them is to go back to a save game that didn't have any of those scripted mods in them.

You seem to have missed the fact that I am starting a new game. The logs are from the process of starting a new game. I even went as far as to uninstall Skyrim, clean my registry of all references to it, reinstall it, reinstall my mods, run BOSS, clean the mods, and start a new game.

Well, you didn't say that you did all of that in your previous posts....you only stated that you were attempting to start a new game after you disabled/uninstalled mods.

If you're unable to start a new game with only a vanilla skyrim (Plus your official DLC's), I'm not certain what to tell you. Where is the crash happening? Is the Bethesda logo appearing? How about the video/carriage ride into Helgen? Will that play thru? (I have read that video is bugged and will crash)

So a bit more info. from you might help...

The 'clean mods' (Read official .esm files) are not clean.

But... No need to use TES5Edit on them (useless activity, no matter what BOSS tells you)

If you cannot start a new game, it's mod related (probably...) most likely some character custom/edit... Apachii Hair will crash your new game right when you can start to customize your character. This is a know issue also on the mod's page and a workaround is supplied there

Your papyrus logs just show the huge junk dropped out from the DLC's but no reason of why the game crashes (it never does).

Use the Unofficial patches (Skyrim, +whichever DLCs you have) from Nexus (search: Unofficial Patch) and put them on the correct place in your load order (so that's on the highest position after the .esm files). This will clear out some game bugs and papyrus errors, but as said that what you posted shows no reason to crash.

You're looking in the wrong direction...

What happens when you start a new game, do you get through the intro part? Where does it crash/hang? Details please, not being Papyrus logs as there is zero in there.

You already said 'when I disable my mods I can start a new game' so there you go... it's a mod that causes your new game to fail, just have to find which one...

You have to understand that the game start (Helgen scene) is not in the game world (where Helgen is on your world map) ... it's a separate area, and as such a lot of mods have problems with it.

You can also just run through the Helgen scene Modless and enable everything when you enter Skyrim at the end...

Sorry, I thought I had mentioned the part about the clean install in my OP. I've been wrestling with this problem for days across several fora.

What happens is that ever since I got Dragonborn, whether or not I do a clean install, once I get all my mods set and BOSSed, cleaned with TES5Edit, etc., Skyrim will CTD without fail about 30 seconds into the audio dialogue of the intro movie. If I then disable or uninstall all of my mods, I can start a game (can I start a game, save at the character creation point and then install all the mods? that kinda scares me as I would expect corruption) just fine but...and this is what is bugging me currently: There is all of that garbage in the Papyrus log, which I don't think should be there on a New Game with a clean install with zero mods.

I get the same thing even if I do a clean install and do not install any mods at all or use TES5Edit, so the mod files (scripts especially) never make it into the equation. And when I say clean I mean uninstalling Skyrim and even NMM, rooting (carefully) through the registry with both CCleaner and RegEdit, and reinstalling completely from scratch.

If I am having errors this soon, I am convinced that I will eventually be right back where I was 3-4 days ago with hundreds of hours into the game and wholly unable to continue playing.

Those script errors, are not truly errors... papyrus log =/= error log. There is no actual error inside the log you posted. Everyone will have that kind of entries no matter what, and nobody would have problems.

I also run a lot of mods and I also have to disable a few of them or I cannot get past the first quest in Helgen... and I have a stable game with my mods afterwards, that's just how it is. Modmakers often do not care to make it completely compatible, and a big part of that quest is automated (scripted). So yea. Problems problems.

As for CTD with all your mods running, it comes from somewhere else.. memory overloads (system/vram), incompatible mods, scripts from uninstalled mods still running in your save game, badly scripted mods causing conflicts with other scripts inside the game... who knows. It's much easier to find a cause when you are actually experiencing the crashes.

If you know which mods you are going to use (so, that means you are not going to have doubt about whether or not you will use that mod) you can safely add those after you did the Helgen quest and are in Skyrim.. you should make a clean save there through console "~" and type something like save "My clean save" so you can always go back there knowing that that's a point where you had only Skyrim, Dawnguard, Heartfire and Dragonborn installed and nothing else (saves you a headache of reinstalling everything all over!). Texture mods especially should not cause major issues - but my advise would be to stay with lite versions (2048x2048 versions or below) if you plan to use multiple heavy mods. You will avoid a lot of problems by just not overstressing your system - no matter how badass rig you might have.

You should watch out with scripted mods, they mostly cause problems which are very hard to correct, really think about it before randomly install this or that NPC or quest mod containing a lot of scripts (if your unsure a mod contains scripts, download the manual version and check if there's a folder called scripts inside). Also compatibility wise you have to check if all your mods can run when Dragonborn (or any other DLC) is installed.. read through the page or even ask the author.

Before you install a new mod, make sure you make a save game through console and give it a appropriate name (eg "Mysave b4mod lalalalala") so you can always go back to the normal stage when your new installed mod is causing you issues you can't or don't want to repair.

If you run a lot of mods you have to take special care... yes it is a lot of work but what you're doing now is 1) probably more work and 2) heck of a headache to do

That's what I just did, made a save at the console (save "Clean new game only DLCs no mods"). Hopefully it will work for me. If I have to abandon a game after 400+ hours again I may just remove Skyrim and go back to Oblivion permanently.

I am pretty safe as far as hi-res textures go, I have kept them to a minimum despite having a "pretty badass rig" and Skyrim has never gone over 1.2GB of RAM (using a utility that tracks RAM usage per program).

I also avoid adding mods with new NPCs (like the Khajiit kitten that either replaces Lucia or adds a new npc) or new quests, and read carefully what each mod changes so there are no conflicts. I am even learning how to use TES5Edit to manually inspect mods, as there are a LOT of mods that reset things to the vanilla skyrim values after they have been changed either by a newer DLC or by one of the Unofficial patches (Better Sorting is awful for doing this over and over).

Yes it's annoying to run a large amount of mods... so many problems can come... unexpected results... it sucks to have to start all over with 400+ hours in game (ridiculous actually... bad doing on development side, knowing their game is heavily mod-able). I hope you can eventually find out if the problem rises again, but I hope it does not with all the stuff you went through now (I been there as well - and everyone running mods has an occasional CTD, modded games are just not 100% stable).

When you start to activate mods, don't activate them all at once... try and go one-by-one or group-by-group. Mods that require to run from the start (like SkyRe (which shouldn't have issues in Helgen even)) should be active from start (obviously). All others like textures, weapons, armors, lighting can basically be added later on... or at least I have not encountered issues activating such mods halfway through the game even. Try not to uninstall mods that can cause issues, issues can even be so simple that you dropped something from some mod somewhere on the floor... forgot about it... uninstalled the mod... returned a week later to the same spot... crash... WTH!?

Just make sure you do a save before you install a new mod, and periodically when you know the game is stable running. when you uninstall a mod, the absolute best thing to do is start again from the save point where that that mod was not installed! (there's tools to tell you exactly where that was in your save games actually... you might wanna look into that). As soon as you notice strange behavior --> analyze where it comes from so you can take steps. First thing to check is if you can repeat the behavior, which is a strong indicator of it not being a random fluke inside the engine but it's likely related to some mod issue, or system overload.

Anyway, enjoy the game (as it's awesome - modded or not). And I hope you get a more stable game now

But bottom line is.. using mods = expecting problems ... try avoid new mods and go with the better known ones. They are a lot more stable (mostly)... and read through the comments on a mod before even considering it.
