I like both games but oblivion in my opinion is so much better in terms of quests, skyrim quests are just go get this and back or go kill this and back not to mention the guild main quests (at least the companions and the college, never started the thieves nor the assassins guild but I´m not hopeful XD) are just like 5 each and they are just fetch quests. Dragonborn main quest is the same thing, just as I was all excited about the quest BAM miraak dies -.- Also there is suppose to be random dragon encounters but I´m yet to see this since 11/11/11. All the dragons I found were quest dragons cities were never attacked in my game nor did I walked around the wilderness and a dragon appears. Edited by scot

Oblivion is more accurately described as the Renaissance. Probably what was unique in oblivion was that your just some random hero and not really considered the main character witch is kind of refreshing since most games don’t do this as a storyline most games want to highlight the main character. Skyrim is really a improvement on various aspects of the series there maybe some areas where is suffers but on the hole they got more right. I wouldn’t really say one game is better I think Todd Howard said it best as each game has its own tone. Some ppl like something a certain way like the class system in oblivion might be more preferred over Skyrim, Obivion is your old school rpg class menu then Skyrim you create your class as you go because your perks define your class its not about only skills anymore. I wont go over everything but the things that bother me the most in each game but for the record I love both games to death.

Some of the main draw backs on oblivion was the level design the dungeons kind of all looked the same yaa there might have been a few that looked ok but its was horrible level design for the most part. think about the horrible auto leveling system despite a very small amount of monster locations that was forced at lvl thats if you knew where they are at in the beginning. The class system is pointless I loved the old school menu and in the beginning its important what you pick but in the end it doesn’t matter since is all skill based and you got an auto perk every 25 in skill beside the racial bonus. Now Skyrim fixed this in making its not all about skill and rather about what perks you pick, ya you can have 100 in two handed but how is that against someone that also has 100 but invested close to or every perk in two handed.

Some of the drawbacks for me in Skyrim by far on my #1 list was the removal of the repairing your gear Im not sure if I can ever understand that one. The faction quest lines although they are very well done they seemed far too short it really felt like you progressed in the factions in oblivion more. Somethings seemed to of vanished in history like some silver weapons or mithril for example. The alchemy was handle better in oblivion I dont care for going to a station to make potions what happened to carrying my alchemy equipment on me. This is really minor but I prefer the old mini game lock picking more. I know a mod has fixed this but the no buffs on screen really bother me, how long do I have on my conjured pet oooh there he goes he just died

If we're talking about level design, actually Skyrim is yet another case of one step forward, two steps back. On the plus side, they clearly had more than one person working on the level design, which is a definite improvement. And it shows in the variety of the cosmetic variations. The style and the feel of the dungeons varies quite a bit better, and creates a greater sense of a world than Oblivion. On the minus side, they also clearly had some strict design goals in all the dungeons of Skyrim. And thus, the dungeons are less interesting (more linear, as some have noted) and more predictable (you nearly always have some convenient exit as well as a clearly defined entrance). Visually, it improved. For replay value or for that feel of getting lost in a grand design, Oblivion once again is superior.

I am considering a whole playthrough of oblivion someday just not any time soon, I actually got sick while playing it maybe just coincidence but it kept me from finishing the game and I went to skyrim after that. Didn't like the dungeons in oblivion too big for too little reward. The worst thing for me was the vampire cure I just gave up and console commanded that away but missed a lot of the plot because of it. Also that crazy guy in the town where you eventually find the cure, the one that wants me to follow different people around all day... I hate that guy! like his house though but can't stand him at all. I hate knowing that if I do play through again I will have to deal with him again. I hated having to fix my gear all the time and ended up using the god mode command all the time eventually. Finding stuff in barrels and other places that were absolutely worthless then carrying them around not knowing that for hours really sucked lol. Before I quit playing I accidentally threw a fireball in some argonian ladys face in a bookstore and she was really mad hehe chased me into the street and I had to pay a fine. That one quest with the guy in the painting you have to jump into and save him, after I finished that quest and we both got out, his wife would not stop telling me to get out of the house! I think there are other bugs like that in the game probably.

The only way I would play through that game again is with mods to fix some things.

Are there any mods that change the meshes of armor and shields to make them look better? Not skimpy or anime stuff just something lore friendly to fix those awful armor and shields like ebony for example.

Any mods to add additional clothes and put them on npcs too? I couldn't stand how everyone eventually had the same two or three outfits and that one green and brown outfit was really ugly for guys.
