Oblivion: Windows 7 vs Windows 10

Wow.... that is a blast from the past, and you kept it in such good condition too! :thumbsup:. I wish I kept my old Commodore 64, with 64K of RAM, and my Macintosh LC2..... and my Sega Master System 2.

I run STEAM version of Oblivion GOTY Editiion Deluxe on the D-Drive (because it's got 2 TBs vs 500 GB on the C Drive) on my newer Windows 10 PC and get a constant 60+ FPS in even a heavily modded Oblivion! And I have just about 110 mods installed as of today!

Any Oblivion problems on W10 have been ironed out years ago. Only major issue still is OSR not working properly, but Oblivion Reloaded now has a heap manager and Oblivion Display Tweaks has a tick fix so OSR is kind of redundant

 

As for my experience, I use Linux and Oblivion always works just fine. Crashing is pretty much normal and expected like on Windows without any fixes

I swore I would never use win10 because of the required hooks into the internet and mandatory updates. I wanted to update the hardware for my XP work computer and found a deal on Craig's list that had a legit fresh install of win10 that I planned to replace with XP. Before I wiped the disk I thought I would check out win10 and I have to admit it's not that bad. It doesn't recognize old dvd copy protection disks but for oblivion I copied the dvd install disk to a flash and it installed. I have Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim installed and for now it's working as a replacement for my XP work computer. If you're planning on a dual boot anyway why not try win10 first and see how it goes? I've seen some comments that win10 is better than win7 like no stutter, ctrl-alt-delete works when win7 needs a forced power down, alt-tab works, etc. I see the new graphic cards require win10 so I may be forced to use it on the game machine some day. I keep the ethernet cable unplugged and it still works!

KatsAwful> I didn't know OSR didn't work on W10, thanks for informing me. I still wish to continue using OSR and OR6.5, so better stick with W7 then. The reason being is because the INI configuration for OSR & OR6.5 is in the simple (easy to understand) .ini format, where the parameters are in a simple list and you turn them off & on with 0 or 1. I don't understand the replacement of the INI with the new 'OblivionReloaded.dll.config' for OR9.0.1, I can't make 'heads-or-tails' of it or how to manager the new OR heap management or manage anything! with it.

I wouldn't know where to begin managing the Heap or any setting in all of that! it's too complicated, and no documentation. What does "type" mean, what does "Reboot" mean, "Versioning" , Info=""/> mean? What is the FrameRate SmartControl, what is this BackgroundThreadPriority Value="5", is this what you mean by heap management, what does 5 mean... 5 threads?? etc..... So yeah I will continue using OSR and OR6.5, so will stick with W7.

 

Chambcra> Thanks for your feedback. That is interesting about Win10 being better than Win7 in terms of no stutter for Oblivion. I am still a little concerned about the mandatory updates and telemetry in Windows10 though. As was mentioned in the last post by KatsAwful, OSR doesn't work in Win10 though, but maybe I don't need OSR for Win10, if what you are saying about Win10 being better than Win7 in terms of no stuttering is correct.

To clarify it's only a comment I've seen from someone else about the stuttering. I've only used this win10 machine for mod work. I see now it was Moksha8088 who mentioned the dual boot so if you have to pick one or the other that would be tough. If the new hardware really requires win10 that would be the only reason I would go to it. I absolutely hate the mandatory updates and spying. It's like you don't really own your computer, you are only leasing it from MS when they retain the right to install anything they want anytime.

 

I've tried OSR and I can't detect that it does anything for me but maybe I don't get stuttering per se. I only get a micro pause or two when I first start the game or go into a new land area so it seems like it's just a texture loading thing. I'm currently playing Morroblivion and it's pretty bad with these micro pauses so in the next couple days I'll try a test on the win10 comp and see if It's better or not.

out of interest - which parts of the telemetry are you uncomfortable with, and have you looked at O&O Shut Up, which turns a lot of it off?

In terms of telemetry - if you want to keep yourself anonymous you wouldnt be on the internet/use a mobile phone, always carry rfid-proof wallets, never shop online, never use a credit card and all the rest of it.

it's a bit of a s#*&#33; argument really given the world we live in.

I never had a 486, but 8086, 286 and a 386 without FPU and I kept forgetting about it as I sometimes tried to use the FPU with floats and it crashed immediately (coding C). I went from there direct to Pentium 1, without passing 486. I did use Atari mostly and have my oldest one at my desk still from 1987, the Atari 8-bit 130XE, which is a beauty really. Otherwise I mainly used ST and Falcon and those had FPU so floats where possible on them.  :wink:

Damn, that is really beautiful. I had an Atari 800 with the 1040 cassette deck, from 1984-93. It died then. It was my first computer and such a great one. I definitely miss it.
