So, I've been modding for about four days. So, obviously, not very long.

Basically, for only a select few of the mods I download from the site, there's no ESP, BSA, any file of that sort. Just the texture and mesh files it comes with. Some of which I've installed in the past, but redownloaded from the site. Basically, like... the mod ShowRaceMenu CacheKiller. I've downloaded that before. It's come with the ESP file, and the SKSE folder with it's files. Now, when downloading it, it doesn't come with the ESP file, but still the SKSE folder and it's files. I've tried different browsers and mod versions, but it's just these select few. For example, the actual RaceMenu mod still comes with it's ESP, BSA and other files all together. Has this happened with anybody else? I've tried restarting my computer, I've tried switching browsers, downloading older versions, and I've looked through the internet and the forums to check for anybody else getting this bug, and can't find a fix. So far, out of the mods I've installed that aren't coming with the files, I've listed these:

Ruins Clutter Improved

Skyrim 2K

HD Enhanced Terrain

ShowRaceMenu

SFO Billboards

Fine Face Textures for Men

CBBE

So far, that's all. I've noticed absolutely no pattern, such as being with certain file types or sizes, nor mod types or sizes. It's happened to both ZIP and RAR, it's happened to files in the KB and files in the MB sizes. I just have no idea what's happening here. If anybody has any of these mods that they can give me a direct link to, rather than downloading them from Nexus, that'd be lovely.

Most replacer mods usually do not have an .esm or .esp. and .bsa is an archive file.

If you feel you are not getting a complete download, check the file contents using the "Preview file contents" function on the download page.

None of the mods you listed contain an ESM, ESP or BSA.

Like M48A5 said, BSAa are archive packages, much like zip files. They can contain assets such as meshes, textures, scripts and sound files. Assets do not have to be packaged into BSAs. When they are unpackaged, they are called "loose files".

ESM/ESPs modify records such as item stats, NPC stats and quest info. They are also necessary if there is BSA file. If the mod doesn't need to modify any records and is only composed of loose files, then it doesn't need an ESM/ESP. The loose files replace files that already exist (they may exist inside of other BSAs). Loose files always override files inside of BSAs.

For Steam Workshop mods, all assets must be packed into BSAs. This means that there will always be an ESM/ESP.

Are they meant to not show up as plugins in NMM, or as even any form of file in things like LOOT and such? Some of them don't even stay "active" on the Nexus Mod Manager when I close and reopen it. That of course means I can't sort them or anything. Is that what's meant to happen? Sorry, as I said, I haven't been modding all too much. I'm still learning the basics.

No, they will not show up in the Plugins tab of NMM, nor in LOOT. In NMM, the only way to "sort" loose files is by letting them overwrite one another. If you want to use the files from a different mod instead, then you have to disable it, then enable it and then select the overwrites again. On the other hand, Mod Organizer will let you sort mods with loose files, and the ones at the bottom of the list (highest priority) will win out.

For example, both Ruins Clutter Improved and Skyrim HD 2K supply this texture file:

textures\clutter\common\broom01.dds

This is a file that already exists in vanilla Skyrim, so this is meant to replace the vanilla version with a better-looking one. Only one replacement version of this file can be used.

  • With NMM, when you install or enable one of those mods, it will eventually ask you if you want to overwrite that file (actually a link, but anyway). Depending on what you choose, you'll use the file from one mod or the other. You have to do this for every file. Fortunately, you can select "Yes to Mod" or "Yes to All" in order to do a whole bunch of files at once. Unfortunately, if you want to change things you'll have to do it all over again.
  • With MO, you can sort the mods "Ruins Clutter Improved" and "Skyrim HD 2K" so that all the files from one will overwrite the files from the other. The advantage of this is that you can easily change the order of these two mods, and you don't have to remember which files should overwrite each other. If you want even more control, then you can selectively hide files from a mod.

If the mods aren't remaining active (green check mark), then you may have a problem with NMM. Is your VirtualInstall directory on the same drive as the Skyrim main files?
