Need a Refresher on Installing Mods

I stopped playing Fallout 4 over a year ago, and even though my game was HEAVILY modded...I remember next to nothing about how I got it that way in the first place. I'd like to start playing Fallout 4 again, and add some mods to make it playable to the extent I was used to, but I'm honestly a bit baffled on how to start. I know there were steps I needed to take to prep my game to be modded, but don't remember what they were. I remember that there were certain mods that were considered MUST HAVES, but don't remember which ones. I'd like to improve the interface, improve the looks of my character and NPCs with body-mods, improve the general graphics and textures (without going overboard and killing my frame-rate), and maybe add some locations, weapons, and outfits. Basic modding stuff, but a lot to tackle when restarting from scratch.

Basically, I've out of practice and could use a refresher on installing mods and which mods to install. I know there was a Youtube series that walked you through the basics, but don't recall where to find it or know if it even applies to the current state of modding. Attempts to look up modding guides bring up guides on how to MAKE mods, not how to install them or which ones are worth installing. Looking up Youtube channels talking about cool mods to install mostly reveals stuff from two or three years back which has likely been overshadowed by newer or improved mods. Frankly, I really just need someone to help point me in the right direction at this point. Hope you can help! Thanks. <3

I'm actually in a very similar position. However, it sounds like you uninstalled the game? Whereas I didn't.

I'm going through a very lengthy process of re-downloading every one of my old mods. I still have them installed in NMM, but now we have Vortex so I need to manually install them on that mod manager instead. I tried the auto-setup thing, but it didn't work for me. So this seems to be the only way.

I'm making notes as I go on what to install first, second, third. I still have my load order, thank goodness. I'm very carefully reserving my edited outfits in a separate location so it doesn't get automatically overwritten when I get to the installing-mods stage.

Also have to update fo4 in general, as well as f4se which always, always confuses the heck out of me. It also means I have to make sure to update any of my old mods which need updating since the last time I played. I gotta make sure not to just re-download the old version of those mods that I was using back then.

I'm not sure if I should just completely uninstall the game myself or not? Should I just delete everything in the old Data folder? I want to make sure every old mod is uninstalled before reinstalling it all with Vortex. But sometimes files get left behind, if you uninstall with the mod manager. Causes issues.

You want a list of must-have mods? It's hard to know what to suggest without knowing what kind of mods you liked in the first place. I think pretty much everyone plays with Place Anywhere, builder or not. Same goes for the Cheat Terminal mod. AWKCR and Armorsmith Extended are definitely required for a ton of mods.

Here's a simple guide I made that will at least get you started. You can ignore the included .ini files if they don't apply to you.

Gopher, the S.T.E.P wiki, and BiRaitBec also have invaluable tutorials and guides as well.

GOPHER! Thank you, that was the Youtube channel I was looking for! XD Are all the videos still 100% accurate? I know mods and the game itself have updated multiple times since then, and I'm sorta worried that stuff like his Bodyslide tutorial may no longer apply with the current builds!
