I think the biggest problem might be that mods on the SteamWorkshop could have a "stronger" CopyRight claim or Publishing or something. I don't know if that's possible, I think someone here mentioned this, but could someone on the Steam Workshop steal a mod here for money and sue or ban that modder for "stealing the mod"? That would be terrible. Is that possible? Despite the mod being out maybe a year ago or so?

In my opinion regardless, just because Steam/Valve has a lot more power doesn't mean the Nexus can't survive. Just look at other sites like Vimeo, they don't have nearly the same power as Youtube, but they're still here and they probably post similar stuff, but they aren't being torn down. There's thousands of music that definitely have similar sounds and free or even paid games that are copycats of others, but they aren't being torn down. Hundreds of websites with the same purpose aren't being torn down.

Example: Tetris games you can actually download for free, if that's a good example. Deviantart, a site for free art and selling art. Free LEGAL music sites or related sites like Jamendo and Amazon.

By the way, I'm not trying to advertise, I have to make an example in some way.

It seems like in a world full of pay for almost everything, there are still places where communities are free and there to simply have fun. Modding for fun and not for money will always be an option. Just look up the Creative Commons license. :) And a lot of modders just want to mod for fun anyway. This will be tough, like everything that goes through this, but I'm sure the Nexus will survive.

Obviously, pessimism and the negatives are there, most people choose to be pessimistic and look towards the negatives mostly, mainly because that's how we're born to survive, but nothing goes through perfectly smoothly. To be honest, if people want to profit from the thousands and thousands and thousands of things they can do online, I respect that they have the right.

However, I stand with everyone else that wants the Nexus site to stay free and nothing more. The Nexus site IS THE FREE Modding site in my opinion.

I hope the extremely talented Skyrim modders can look at games like Dota2 and submit their item creations (sets/weapons/textures/music etc) to workshop. There is lots of potential to make money if you have creative submissions.

The point about people dripping mods out a part at a time is a valid one, he did it to too stay in the hot files, once you involve money modders can do it to milk players, publishers already drip feed paid DLC to idiots on consoles and modders can do the same.

Not entirely. I might be a very small time modder but i would rather burn than see myself siding everything i speak against. And if (god forbid) mods for money starts to be a thing and nexus falls or becomes steamcurator#2 i will just host my mods in some website or even upload them on mediashare and continue the free modding. When i started modding i have never considered modding for money (i don't even have the donate button on), its just a hobby that i like doing, whether my mods suck or not.

I agree. modding started as a hobby and for free and it should remain the same. If we modders start to become the same monster as companies like EA with their micro transactions and dlc (which are mods but for money) then why are we even calling them out on their dirty deeds if we are becoming the same as them?

I'm both a modder AND a hard core gamer who thinks Oblivion with certain mods is best of the best and with my work I try to improve the "best of the best", which is - even for me - a real challenge :)

As a human being living in poverty at the moment I would love to make some money with the work I'm doing but as a player I would never ever have the money to buy the more than 200 mods that are active in my current distribution. And though my financial situation might improve there will always be people who can't afford buying all the mods they want or need. Since I want my work to be enjoyable for everyone selling it for money just is no option. On the other hand, I'd love to earn myself a living with the hours and hours spend working with the TES editor. The idea that I came up with is that of a Kickstarter campaign where modders ask the community for the money they need so they can continue to make mods that are available as FREE downloads.

Anyone suggestions on this ??

At first it's difficult to say that i've to say in english. So sorry if my english is not that good.

basically - the humans very own speciality is playing (not in the sense of doing stupid things) playing with harmonies, playing with colors, playing with materials - in music, in graphic, even in cooking - most developements of the mankind are results of playing - you could it call also creativity - playing/creativity is the humans essence.

modding as such / in my understanding - is playing but a giant step further - not only consuming things unchanged - the modders have understand that the greater adventure in playing is to modify things, to develop things - to be creative - At no time before there are so much possibilities to be creative and like this community always proofs - its getting much easier - here's no bachelor or master needed to getting in touch with creativity and to build good/beautiful results.

that we see here is the future - high above those thinkings like worth, money, career - the systems which are ruling our lifes (sadly) prefer money as the only thing worth to life for - a failure in my eyes - the new economy prefers information as the most worthiest thing - just for making money out of it - also a failure - the true worth of the human is the ability to play and to be creative - more and more people are joining the modding community, guess why...

if some modders make their way into a job / career its ok for me, the life actually costs a lot of money, if modding earns enough to life from - its ok, like any artist around the globe who could life from his art - at least aslong our systems didnt find another medium to organize and grow life.

As conclusion, dont think to much about "worth" or "Money", you as sideowners, as center for creative works are holding much more powerful things in your hand - knowledge, creativity, inspiration, science, energy

i dont say - that the great developers of games do look here from time to time to feel the pulse and energy of the gamers / modders - to get inspiration/ideas - but who knows ;) it could be that some companies dont like modding for some much simplier reason - modding grows at a speed which companies cant handle - the visions and ideas here are in parts many steps ahead from that some commercial games could give - here's is no deadline, here's no 5 year development time - every second you could see the modding grow - with open end and open horizons

Paid mods would probably never work in the long run. the market would run over with body mods, pretty faced followers, and skimpy outfit mods, because that sells and anybody with hands and a few spare hours came make. It would be a nightmare for the people who like/make mods outside of those three categories because they would have not time on the front page by the thousands of "pretty lady mods" coming out every two minutes.
