  1. Since I had no luck in the CPU threading department I upgraded from Catalyst 3.1 to 3.4, then to 3.5 Beta hoping to gain some performance and instead I lost 6% frame rate (3.4 and 3.5 Beta were equal.) After upgrading the drives I thought I'd test the various CrossFire modes to see if I could gain there. I couldn't gain there. Here are the average frame rates for the CrossFire modes from Fraps. I benched using the opening scene from when the text was first displayed until the cart entered the fort. CrossFireX Modes: NO HT: iNumHWThreads=4, all threaded, XFire Default CCC 13.5 Result: Frm, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 4636, 139808, 14, 60, 33.160NO HT: iNumHWThreads=4, all threaded, XFire AFR CCC 13.5 Result: Frm, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 3530, 137718, 14, 58, 25.632NO HT: iNumHWThreads=4, all threaded, XFire 1+1 CCC 13.5 Result: Frm, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 3647, 137656, 15, 56, 26.494NO HT: iNumHWThreads=4, all threaded, XFire Skyrim CCC 13.5 Result: Frm, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 4484, 138436, 17, 62, 32.390NO HT: iNumHWThreads=4, all threaded, XFire Disabled CCC 13.5 Result: Frm, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 3529, 137624, 15, 54, 25.642Upgrading from Catalyst 3.1 to 3.4 fixed a shadow flickering issue I had so I won't roll back the driver and will have to search elsewhere for performance (shadows & AA probably)
  2. Is it possible the new game profiles changed your AA settings? I updated from 13.1 to 13.4 today and an existing Skyrim shadow flickering issue I had vanished. Unfortunately I lost a 6% of my Skyrim frame rate also so I now have to hunt down what changed in the new Skyrim profile.
  3. Hi all, I benchmarked changes to iNumHWThreads, Hyper-threading and some of the bUseThreaded* values to see if I could benefit from tweaking them on my system and I didn't find any benefit (using the benchmarking method I used.) My benchmark system: i7-920 @ 3.6Ghz / Rampage II Gene AMD Radeon 5970 (dual GPU) Skyrim + Win7 Pro on a 512GB SSD DDR3-1600 12 GB (9-9-9-24T) I benchmarked using Fraps to record the FPS and min/max/avg from the start of the opening scene when the text is first displayed until the cart entered the fort. The first 3 benchmarks were done with Hyper-threading enabled in the BIOS and the last 3 with Hyper-threading disabled. I chose 2 & 6 for iNumHWThreads expecting so see a difference that I could then tweak further. I enabled all of the regular bUseThreaded* variables in the benchmarks except in benchmark 3. and 4. In 3. and 4. I turned the below bUseThreaded* values off to see if there was any effect: MultiThreadMovement=0 bUseThreadedMorpher=0 bUseThreadedBlood=0 bUseThreadedAI=0 The results show the Hyper-threading state in green, the count of HWThreads in red and the average FPS in blue. Here are the results of the benchmarks: HT: iNumHWThreads=2, all threaded = 1 Result: Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 4842, 139262, 19, 61, 34.769HT: iNumHWThreads=6, all threaded = 1 Result: Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 4810, 139324, 12, 62, 34.524HT: iNumHWThreads=6, no blood thread, no morpher thread, no AI thread, no movement thread Result: Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 4729, 138763, 13, 62, 34.080NO HT: iNumHWThreads=6, no blood thread, no morpher thread, no AI thread, no movement thread Result: Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 4932, 138529, 18, 62, 35.603NO HT: iNumHWThreads=6, all threaded = 1 Result: Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 4804, 139137, 15, 61, 34.527NO HT: iNumHWThreads=2, all threaded = 1 Result: Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg Result: 4894, 139153, 16, 62, 35.170I'm satisfied with the results and will just have to look elsewhere for low hanging fruit. [edit] Added note about colored text.
  4. I was having crashes whenever I attached a Script to a new Quest. I googled and the outcome from a few people (I wish I could give them credit) was to open CK and immediately save it to create a new .esp, then create the Quest without adding Scripts, save the Quest and then edit that newly created Quest and add the Script.

    GOTY

    When does GOTY come out?
  7. I bought a 64GB Vertex 2 and dedicated it as a Photoshop cache drive and it's great. I'd like to get oen of the 1GB/s revodrives next because at their speed, they're cheaper than buying 3 ssds and raiding them.
  8. Ya it's a good card. There is nothing wrong with it and you'd be happy with it. They're the same class card (you can see from the specs). The difference in the cooler in the pic isn't important so don't let it bother you. I'm personally a fan of Radeon cards for gaming and Nvidia for 3d/video work but that's a good card so I'd get it.. or if you're not in a rush, I read that the Radeon 7900 series are coming out in January.
  9. If it was installed by the manufacturer then look for the office serial key. Sometimes they stick it to the bottom of the laptop or to the side/back of the case or include it in the collection of disks/manuals that accompany the system. If they gave you a restore disk then it could also be on there. If you use the restore disk already then it wasn't on there. Just check the stuff that came with your system. If you don't find it then call them and ask.
  10. If I were on a budget I'd get a Microsoft Comfort 6000. They're great mice (I've been buying their varying generations for years) but the buttons wear out after 2-3 years of hardcore use so you have to replace them. I'm not sure what prices are like there (probably crazy for luxury items) so I'd check Amazon.co.uk and if I found something there I'd then check amazon.de and amazon.fr for better prices. I live in eastern Europe now and I order everything from Amazon because local prices here are insane. Good look on finding your mouse. [edit] It looks like the DPI of the MS 6000 mouse can't be changed via it's buttons (its 1000 dpi) so maybe it's not what you'd like. 1000 dpi is fine if you only use one monitor though.
  11. I would use a i7-3960x and grab 64GB ram or whatever the ram maxes at and add some revo drives. If it wasn't for gaming then I'd get a multi-cpu board and pack it full of AMD Opterons and as much ram as I could find that for rendering and encoding stuff. For vid cards I'd take whatever plays games the fastest. Probably a Radeon 6990. Maybe a 580 as a secondary card for video encoding.
  12. I use the Razer Mamba. It goes up to 5600dpi (Can lower it with your fingers when doing fine movements) and it can be used wired or wireless. It's a comfy mouse and has a very long braided cable.
  13. I used to use www.ncix.com for all my stuff but now I use amazon. If I can't find it on amazon then I use Bing's shopping search. You can click the above links to show the search results for the fans
  14. I'm turned off by the lack of Paladin/knight too. I really enjoyed D1 and D2 so I expect I'll enjoy D3. The graphics, recent game play vids and lack of paladin character zapped my interest for it so I'm going to take my time getting it.
  15. New Vegas is better because it's more like a game Fallout 3 is better because the immersion is deeper
  16. Some people will vote for one because they haven't played the other so the results are going to be a bit skewed
  17. I think I'm half italic from my mother's side and half bold from my fathers
  18. I agree. The graphics look outdated. I would guess they finished the main graphics part of the engine in 2006 and then spent the last 5 years understaffed creating the game content, implementing the new b.net and balancing game play stuff. Starcraft was the same thing. It looked like they took the 2003 Warcraft 3 engine, upgraded it visually a little bit and then spent the next 2 years balancing and polishing the races while the graphics were left to go out of date. If I were to recommend Blizzard change one thing on their games I would say increase the resolution of textures.
  19. NV uses some codecs which are installed in Windows and KLite installs codecs in Windows so NV ends up using some codecs KLite updated/installed. Adding a codec pack, removing a codec pack or customizing your codecs manually (for more advanced users) may solve your prob if it's stemming from this. Don't forget to also search the FO3 forums for answers because many probs in NV also occur in FO3.
  20. For a period I was plagued with CTD's that happened in combat and always happened when a new combat sound would play. An example is I'd be attacked by mutants and start fighting then I'd hear a new sound join the mix and CTD. Here is my July 10th post on it (via google)
  21. I would like awareness in combat to be more realistic. If two guys are standing beside each other and I kill one. The other should freak out. [edit] Not just freak out, but act like he's aware his comrade was shot and that it is not a good thing. Currently the bad guys have badguyzheimers. When there are 2 in a group and you snipe one from a distance, the other will have no recollection of the events that have transpired 10 second later. An example is you snipe and kill a guy in his group. His other group mate says "who's there?" [slowly walking in the wrong direction away from the shot] "it must have been nothing" while returning to stand beside a newly dead comrade.. completely oblivious to what just happened. It would be better if when you shoot a bad guy his friends take cover, run away, or maybe crouch where they stand while shooting towards where they think the shot came from. They shouldn't come out of cover or forget what happened until some amount of game time has passed.
  22. When China released the video of their space walk with those air bubbles magically floating up past their astronauts I think it was time for NASA to dismantle.
