  1. If you have two mods, one as a dzip file in CookedPC and one as xml, which takes precedence? I have a personally-customised def_item_armor.xml in CookedPC\items to change the appearance of some of the armor, and am just about to install the CEO mod, which is a dzip file. As this also includes a modified def_item_armor.xml file, I'm not sure which will be used in game. If the xml file takes precedence, which I'm guessing it does, would this approach work? - Install the CEO mod - Install the unpacked def_item_armor.xml file from the CEO mod downloads - Re-do my customised changes to this file
  2. It's strange. When I first started TW2, one of the things I didn't like about it was the absence of opportunity to go off an grind for XP by killing monsters, something I'd liked about TW1. Now I'm back with TW1 after playing TW2 for a couple of months, and I'm getting really bored really fast at the thought of having to go off and grind for XP by killing monsters. (Woah, we're having a really amazing thunderstorm here right now. That last strike just sent three cats running for cover. Shutting down in 3...2...1...)
  3. It's Lay down the trap, takeittakeittakeittakeittakeit. Yaaay. Listen. Kepow! Repeat three times :) You need to make sure you get all of your feathers first though. I also like standing on the edge of the quarry watching them fly up the path towards me, thinking "That's right. You do all of the work and tire yourselves out. I'll just stand here and have a vodka while I wait."
  4. On the other-hand Bethesda commit to an SDK at game launch 11 months before the game has been released....CDProjekt aren't committing to anything on that front. I'd rather have a proper SDK than an Enhanced Edition; a community of thousands can always do better than a dev team of less than 100. http://www.gog.com/en/forum/the_witcher_2/tw2_sdk/page1 Second post. A timeline would have been even better, but at least it's a confirmation.
  5. Hate to say this, but that's a downgrade, isn't it? The first digit represents the chipset, the second represents performance. A x6xx card is lower performance than a x8xx card. The 4650 isn't as good as your existing 3850. http://asia.gamespot.com/forums/topic/26760084 shows a direct comparison.
  6. LOL. Me too on ME2 :) I know it's supposed to be a great game, and don't dispute that, but I just couldn't get interested enough to go through the learning curve. I suspect that I just don't personally like sci-fi games. I also left TW1 on the shelf for about 3 months, after getting slaughtered time and time again during the Prologue. It was only after I went back to it that it finally clicked and I found out what an amazing game it was. That was my first real-time combat game, back in May this year.
  7. I'm in my '50s and have slow reflexes. I'd never played a real-time combat game until a few months ago. I was TERRIFIED of TW2 after hearing about all of the combat issues. Now I play it on "Hard", and when the next upgrade comes out later this year and we can go to a more difficult mode, I'll be doing just that. The combat system is complex, and does take some learning, but when you know it, it's incredibly flexible with, usually, a multitude of different ways of killing your enemy. That being said, a game is supposed to be fun. If it isn't, then by all means stop playing. Different games suit different people.
  8. I'm starting to agree with swordsman5 - try a new game, see what happens. If you have somewhere you could post a savegame, I'd be happy to try it. (And yup, Panel Tweaks is a fantastic mod. And I found out the hard way that using the 1.2 mod with 1.3 game messed things up).
  9. Did you update the mods to their latest versions after updating the application, or just reinstall the ones you had already? Changes in the data structure in game version 1.3 meant that a lot of mods had to be updated. I haven't seen anything specific to saving, but I know that at least one of the ones you listed (Panel Tweaks) causes major problems in the meditation screen (potion making) if you try to use an obsolete version. (Yes, there are others having this problem, but as a percentage of the total number of players it's probably very small. If this was affecting large numbers, the main forums would be full of it. Please don't think that this means I'm dismissing your problem as trivial. Anything that stops you from playing the game is serious. But I tend to be an optimist on such things - if very few people have the problem, it increases the probability of you being able to fix it yourself rather than wait for the developers.)
  10. What mods were you using? Did you try it without the mods? (Sorry, as most users are NOT encountering this problem, don't you think that may be a more likely cause than the game itself?)
  11. It does sound like files or directories are getting locked and then not unlocking, but it is weird. You say that it's permanent after you meditate? What happens with the autosaves? Does it just not do it, or does it give an error message? Did you install/update using Run as Administrator, and is it still set that way? Try the opposite to whatever it is now. Worst case, yes, I'd try a reinstall. Copy out your current saves and then delete the Witcher 2 directory in Documents first. After reinstalling, copy back the individual files, not the directory itself, and don't copy back the QuickSav until after you've tested it. (I'm reluctant to advise reinstalling if you're a Steam user with a slow download speed though. This could take a long time.)
  12. I got into a discussion with someone over at the main Witcher forums on this problem a couple of days ago. He solved it by going through these steps: - rename your gamesaves folder to something else (e.g. gamesaves-old) - create a new gamesaves folder - copy all of your save games into it EXCEPT for QuickSav.sav and its bmp file. Try again. If your problem is the same, I think that it's a permissions issue, possibly due to running as admin. The game literally can't save the game - it has no write permission. If your last QuickSav is important to you, try copying it over too, but only after you've tested without it being there.
  13. Ah, some people just don't have the necessary sense of commitment to a game :)
  14. And you've missed quite a few that have political impact. - "Save Anais" is actually two separate options, both of which leave the world in a different state and change Roche's future. (Anais to Radovid, Anais to Natalis). If you imported from TW1, it's actually three options, as "Anais to Radovid" is different depending on whether Adda is alive or dead, so "which savegame should I import" also becomes a decision point :). - On Iorveth path, "Save Triss" must give a different political result depending on whether or not you kill the dragon. If you're including Letho as an option, then you should probably also include the status of the dragon on all of tthe Roche path options. So you will need to add: 24 or 40 options for Anais on Roche path (your 8 should actually be 32 or 48) 16 for Triss (for the dragon) giving a new total of either 72 or 88. Then x 2 for Sile, giving a grand total of 144 or 176. Do you plan to play them all? :) However, if you just look at political differences and only count dead royalty, but also include the Aryan decision since CDPR did, I've counted 28 variations. Roche Path: (Henselt dead or alive) x (Anais with Radovid and Adda alive, Anais with Radovid and Adda dead, Anais with Natalis, Triss option) = 2 x 4 = 8 Iorveth Path: (Stennis dead or alive) x (Philippa option, Triss option with Saskia dead, Triss option with Saskia alive) = 2 x 3 = 6 Total 14, x 2 for Aryan = 28 Incidentally, have you found ANY political impact in-game from the Aryan decision, other than a couple of dialogues in Chapter 3, or do you think that the devs are leaving this for an addon/TW3? TL;DR. 176 endings if you include the life/death of all major characters and TW1 import variations. Edit for maths error.
  15. I'd also like to recommend Golden Oriole as a good defensive potion, especially in the early game when your armor isn't too wonderful. It's not as good as some as the others, but it has low toxicity and no adverse side-effects. Add me to the list of people who always find The Kayran to be a challenge. I've successully killed it at least half a dozen times, but it's the only fight in the game where I still have to drop to Easy.
  16. Yup, it's a bit of a shock the first time you hit X in that battle and nothing happens. I've run Chapter 3 four times this morning to see the effect of various decisions. I've missed out most of the side-quests, but The Operator is so much FUN now that I've learned about bombs and traps that I played it every time. Still never managed it on the first attempt though. I usually make at least one mistake.
  17. That works, and using ockham's razor, it's nice and simple, so it should be correct. Stennis poisoner + Stennis dead = no poison attempt. I don't think we have an in-game answer to what happened to Philippa on Roche path, except that we know she's alive. I just ran the Chapter 3 Roche path again, and couldn't get Radovid to say anything.
  18. I wish Geralt had locked the door again after getting the dreams he needed. I dread to think what happen the next time someone wanders into the area. Makes sense on the dagger. On the poisoning, I think that this is one part of the game that is open to inventiveness on WHY it didn't happen. Obviously, there's no definitive answer. :) If the priest wasn't the poisoner, then the poison could have easily been added after they returned from the Henselt meeting. As Stennis died in the mist, the poisoner could easily have changed his mind about doing it. If it was the priest, then it meant that she didn't drink from the cup. The meeting was called primarily because of the mist, with the secondary reason being the arrival of Iorveth, Geralt and Zoltan. Iorveth would still have arrived, the other two didn't. Stennis is no longer present. Later events indicate that the reaction to Iorveth's arrival is probably similar on both paths, except that he seems to have better living quarters if you didn't show up. So, no drinking out of respect for Stennis? or because Zoltan isn't there?
  19. I don't think "because you're not there to save her" is a vallid reason for Saskia not to get poisoned :) Thanks on the Philippa one. I must have missed that on the conversation. The others aren't answered in-game, so I'm probably looking for inventive replies. ;) I think I agree with your second choice on Cecil's dream. Poor guy, to have that revealed.
  20. Who was the first assassin, the one who Geralt kills at the end of TW1? He doesn't seem to be one of Letho's team, and wasn't wearing a medallion. Why doesn't Saskia still get poisoned if you're on Roche path? If the priest really did poison the goblet, he must have done it before going to the meeting with Henselt, as he's dead after that. So she should still have been poisoned, even though Stennis is dead and Geralt isn't there. Does this mean the priest wasn't the poisoner? Did Radovid still capture Philippa if you're on the Roche path? If you're on Iorveth's path, and rescue Triss, why do you pick up Philippa's dagger when you find Iorveth near the end? Wouldn't it make more sense to leave it with him, so that he can still try to cure Saskia when he recovers? What did Cecil dream?
  21. It's mainly my own incompetence. I think that killing the operator requires you to have a clear head and not lose it during the battle. I always ended up between two gargoyles while randomly bashing keys in the blind hope that something would GET ME OUT OF HERE!. The only one that ever worked was F9. Being surrounded by traps helped me stay still and think it through.
  22. Yup. I hadn't bothered speaking to her the first time I tried, as she doesn't say anything interesting anyway, but I went and had a chat before going back. I didn't speak to the soldier after first getting the quest. Does that make a difference? I didn't think I needed to until after meeting the ghosts.
  23. With any luck, something worse will happen, like the city being..... (slaps hand over mouth to avoid spoiler). And then they'll forget about your little faux-pas.
  24. Oh, and definitely a Thank You for introducing me to the delights of trap-using. I just went back, with my weak mage build, and tried killing the operator again. For the first time ever, I was able to kill him on Normal, by hiding behind a pillar and laying traps all round me for the gargoyles. I enjoyed that.
