matortheeternal wrote: Not really. Discord chats with bots and "free-flowing" information are pretty standard. Really this dates back to the early days of IRC. This has been the norm for a very long time now.

It has been a pleasure chatting with you Bloo.....have a great one.

So far, from what I understand, there's a fair bit more freedom for the Nexus admins to play around with Discord chat than the current IP Boards chat. Currently, it's just a trial run, and if nobody likes it, or it can't serve the Nexus' purpose as needed, then it'll probably be dropped and we'll all end up back in the old chat until a suitable replacement is found. With the freedom the admins have had so far, I wouldn't be surprised if they are able to fully incorporate it into the Nexus Forums like the current chat, with all the accounts linked like it currently is.

The only reason the current chat works like it does is because it is supplied by IP Boards, who also made the forum software we're currently using. The current chat is ancient, and laden with a number of annoying bugs that IP Boards don't appear to be fixing. The random kick bug has been around for as long as I can remember, and yet IP Boards has done nothing to deal with it as far as I'm aware.

If they are able to properly embed the Discord chat into the Nexus, then I don't imagine there would be a problem with the chat using the Nexus' database, which would mean all the members on the chat would be the same members on here like the current chat does it. I imagine the only reason it's not currently embedded is because they're testing it, and getting us to trial it to see how everyone likes it.

Besides, although the current chat is a bit empty at the moment, it's hasn't been shut down and I don't imagine it'll be shut down until Dark0ne and his team are satisfied that Discord will be a suitable alternative.

This is the internet. You have no freedom of speech on someone's domain or their chat room. Do not confuse Discord with public domain.

In my cursory overview there's nothing egregiously bad in there. To my untrained legal eye it appears they are not selling your information to third parties.

Saying you're giving your life history to them just to chat is definitely hyperbole. That might be true with a service like Facebook, but Discord only requires a username, email address, and a password to sign up.

Your "personal information" at this point could be a sideline email address, a password just for this chat and a username.

Doesn't require anything else.

rpace, did you ever actually use the chat here on nexus? I've never ever seen you there. Nor do any of the regulars remember you... Seems kind of odd to complain about something disappearing that you didn't use.

@rpacetoday. Assuming you are in the US, the constitution protect our freedom of speech from the government, so they can't throw us in jail just for expressing our opinion on something. It does not protect us from a private organization telling us to leave the room if they think we are crossing the line. Most chats I've been in kick people for really obnoxious things like sexually explicit language, encouraging others to do something illegal or hate speech.
Another thing is that online, we are interacting with people from all over the world, and freedom of speech laws are different in different countries, so which one to apply would be a tricky business.
And... you've been told repeatedly that you do NOT have to get into Discord if you don't care for it.

Seems like you just can't/won't/don't bother to read.

Here is part of what you see when you click the "Chat" button on the Nexus:

To access our old, boring, text-only chat room, please click "I Agree" at the bottom of this page.

===========================================

Then there's your totally incorrect rant about "being forced":

...

edit: I do not want discord, I just want to chat in the old fashioned way.......something I donated money to support. Now I am being forced to sign away more personal info to yet another company like Microsoft or Apple or Google.

No, you are not "being forced" to do anything at all. NOTHING prevents you from using chat "in the old fashioned way".

You seem to be whinging that OTHER people will be able to use an option you don't want.

Ermmmm...

The Number One rule on the Nexus is: "Don't like it? Don't use it." :armscrossed:

It's hard to take someone seriously when the points and objections they raise are demonstrably false.

(Kinda' like a certain major party candidate for U.S. President... :whistling: )
