  1. I think Shelley might have been more referring to what about an image's composition they thought was good/bad as she was agreeing with Marmotte who was talking about constructive criticism. I.e. I liked the shadows in the background and the way the angle by the tree was used but didn't think the purple color tint worked very well in this shot. Plus if you don't like an image you simply don't endorse it or comment - that pretty much is all you need to express actual dislike.
  2. You put a lot of thought into this. Frankly I like it a lot - very nice overhaul :)
  3. Ah well a random image list like you describe StandAlone also sounds cool. A bit of a roulette. I think the idea of the randoms lasting for a week (or X days), however, as it gives them time to be seen by more folks and hence exposes them more. I was thinking the idea would be a way for people to get their work exposed to many people and hence allow for interest to be gathered. If people saw X image (regardless of how often they posted) and said - wow I like that! Lets check out their gallery. After doing so they might go - nice selection of images I think I will track them for a while. Or they may go ... hmm not really interested. Of course anyone could do that with a pure random choice each time ... but that removes the plus that having a few days exposure would provide. Still I think either way would be a viable idea to try out and consider. Your way has the benefit of bypassing the other main problem which is the rapid flow of images and why I am replying again when I told myself I wouldn't. The number of images posted each day is on par with the problem, to me, that social activity ties into TI. I used to try to view 10-15 pages of images every night but got quickly burnt out. I simply could not keep up with the massive flow. It became a job. I doubt most folks can keep up and so it is super easy for any image to get lost in the flow - unless you have spent enough time making a name for yourself (which was easier to do in the past I think than currently thanks, in part, because of tracking). Before tracking I think folks spent more time just browsing the pages at random (well I know I did). But time is tight and so tends to be easier to just spend what little time you have with those you have an interest in. Again human nature, and time restraints, at play here. No one has time to follow everyone or comment on everyone or endorse everyone they like. Well maybe a few people but overall most folks don't have that time (or the desire to live on the share 24/7). So how do you solve that? To me allowing just one post a day at max would go a long way in slowing things down. People who post 5 images a day adds up quickly. Heck I would even say once every 48 hours should be the limit. Not only would it slow things down nicely but would probably get people to do showcases more often. That way people would be more likely to go out and check the image share itself (versus just their notifications) since it wouldn't be so overwhelming (and they mighty have less notifications). Well at least that is how I would feel. I don't know, of course, how others would react. I just know I feel like am drowning in images when I try to keep up. It would also mean more chances for a single post to stand out. I almost never check top images anymore. If I have any free time after keeping up with people I like to follow I go to the main image share and go through and look for random shots I like. Usually do this when I have an hour to kill. I would see a lot more of that, and be more tempted to visit, if the image pace was slower. A big thing, however, is that this is a Skyrim issue mainly. It could hurt the other shares if things got restricted as they might be too slow already. No idea how much fine-tuning on individual shares the Nexus folks can do, if any. Still some good ideas coming out which is nice to see.
  4. Well started work on a guide this week - whether it should be uploaded as a tutorial mod (what I plan on at the moment) or as a Wiki I am not sure. The mod I think has a few more options to be found versus the Wiki. But I need to learn more about how one updates a Wiki and such this weekend. No ETA though as I have many projects going on right now. I like the idea of no top images at all. I suppose people will still post a lot of images to try and be seen but they do that anyway. Wonder if they could hide it just for Skyrim? or just get rid of it on all shares since I am not sure what its purpose is really (but I understand its Skyrim that tends to have the biggest issue being the most popular). I can see it for mods as it actually works pretty well for mods. But human nature and social connections tends to create more issues on the image share as mods are far more limited and something that is used versus viewed - so people are less likely to endorse or vote for a mod unless they really like it. I also think it is important to remember quality and beauty of an image is subjective and everyone has there own idea of what constitutes a "good" image post - funny, sensitive, artsy, romantic, a story, a landscape, a mod highlight, etc. Not to mention the person posting it may see it as something beautiful even if some others do not. Or the simple fact that many folks like over-sexed well endowed females/males in barely any armor and always endorse those when its clear that the quality of those shots is very subjective. Note not saying anything wrong with that either. I am a very strong supporter of the Manly Monday posting theme myself :p I have mixed feelings about random images being selected for the TI. On the plus side if they stayed there for a week or two it would be a great way to highlight posts without bias. Not sure how folks would feel about it being random as far as the subjective quality of the shots but it could be fun to just see what gets tossed up there every week. The down side is it could promote more spamming to try and increase the odds of being randomly selected and it isn't that different from just browsing the image flow to begin with. I am curious what ideas people can come up with to combat human nature. I am not even talking about the negative aspects involved here. I am just talking about the fact that some people are social and friendly and because of that they make a lot of friends and thus get a lot of support. I don't think anyone should be hated on simply because they have the time, and inclination, to be social on the image share. Skyrim is a big community and a large part of that is the social aspects, both good and bad. The image share is very social area, at least for Skyrim, and people make friends there which disrupts the idea behind TI being just about the images. You get into issues of support, social obligation, and feelings. I have never really seen a good answer to this problem short of removing it or cutting down on how many images can be in it at one time per user - which I think would still help even if it doesn't solve the problem entirely. Ideally it should just be about fun; sharing your enthusiasm and enjoyment of a hobby you like with friends and the community. Ah well no easy answers I suspect.
  5. Good point. I am ambivalent on top images although would be nice to find something that showcases images with more diversity for all the various shares.
  6. AoK mentioned this thread and I will look into the Wiki. I have started work on a "Storytellers Guide Mod" that is about 30% done and wasn't sure there would be any interest. Basically a guide on how to post multiple images at one time, tips and tricks for posting showcases and stories on the image share, a PDF of poses from the most popular pose mods, and a PDF guide on common console commands and mods that are useful for telling stories and doing screenshots. Also a little lit on image share courtesy and tips on writing a story. Not sure if I prefer the idea of a Wiki or hosting it as a mod which can then have comments, discussions, and articles. Also might be more visible since many don't know there is a Nexus Wiki. Although if the Nexus Wiki seems like it would work better easy enough to add it as a link in all my posts on Nexus. The plus I see with doing it as a mod is the other tools available - see if people are using the guide through downloads and endorsements and easier to have discussions. Anyhow going to check out the Wiki this week and see what is involved with that. Otherwise will try to speed up work on my guide. As for the overhaul - I do hope we can continue to post images in the body of the post by linking off site. I also very much like the idea of limiting top images to just one image per person at a time. I think people take it to seriously myself but if it would make the community happier, with less friction, I am all for getting more people into the list. I would like to see some variety there. Image quality is very subjective and there are things about an image that can outweigh quality - like is it for a written story? A funny shot? A shot to highlight a new mod? Just some examples. So I am not a big fan of statements like "only quality shots" should be there as that is subjective. On the other hand also not a fan of the images only being there because some people are far more active than others. I don't blame anyone though as it is just how human nature and being social works. Rather pointless to get upset over it. Better to consider other models that might allow for more variety. I really like the idea of limiting to one per person at any one time. It would really help bring in some new people. At least as many people as there are top images at least. Or once a month is also a nice idea. I am not keen on a random mix though as it would still encourage spamming and I think there needs to be some indication that others enjoy the images. But once a month is fine - if people really like an authors work then they can track them and see their other images that way - while still allowing for some recognition of effort - where effort includes being active in the community as well as doing impressive posts. I think people sometimes forget this - being active in the community is also important because if no one was active there wouldn't be any discussion about this at all. Just need to find a better balance. Also if there is any chance of going up to 800 or even 1024 width for images in the body that would be super awesome. The 600 limit really kills motivation for doing elaborate shots. In the past I think we could do 1024 (I know we could do 800) and really miss that. 1024 is a great size to show some detail. The current 600 limit also encourages one post spamming because people feel the small size wrecks the quality and detail of their shots.
  7. In response to post #34096785. Excellent advice.
  8. Aye, I think what bothers me the most is that there is no solid reason for it. I could understand if it was a serious issue for managing the site - like bandwidth or crashes or something. But it seems to be a purely cosmetic issue. Why not just leave it as is until the site is redesigned? Then the image share posters, even if a minority, will be happy and when the site is redone the cosmetic issue will be fixed. Seems like a win-win to me. I was going to do a showcase for a new ENB someone released and admit my motivation was lacking. No one will be able to see any of the detail in the images anyhow. Ah well it is clear we are a minority which cares. Short of not renewing my membership, and showing my unhappiness in a few posts in these threads, there really isn't anything that can be done about it. Shame to as some of the changes are nice - the rescaling and editor are good features. But 600 pixels ... it is just such a small size for displaying something and with so many images users just don't have the time to go look at them on an external site.
  9. While I appreciate that they are trying to improve things (and certainly some of the new features are nice) I am also very dissapointed in the reduced size. I use 800 width just fine - fits perfectly - and when using images to tell a story the 600 is just to small to really show what you need ... 800 is at least a tad better. I do hope they change this soon. I also wish there had been some news on this. It sometimes feels like Nexus has gotten so big that perhaps they sometimes don't always think about what some changes might mean to some people in their community. While this will probably be a non-issue to the majority of people, and hence will not hurt their user-base, I am still dissapointed in the lack of communication and the apparent lack of understanding on how this change might be received by some in the community - especially by those who do a lot of posting in the image share area. Without this aspect of the community I would have quit Skyrim last year - even with mods and enbs - as it is the story telling and sharing of content with other members that I enjoy. I stay, in a large part, because of people I have met here. My point is that I sometimes feel that Nexus doesn't always show that they appreciate their community (for example something like this without a major communication on it). It is their site, of course, and they can do what they want. But keeping the community in mind when making changes is always a good thing IMO. Of course some people seem to like the change although from the comments so far I think an increase in size would not be an issue with anyone either. Also want to add that this size change is not just for people who do stories - it is also for every showcase out there. It makes it that much harder to have a great showcase with the smaller images. Yes you can link to the full shot but time is also a valuable commodity. Having bigger shots makes it people to see the images yet not have to take a lot of extra time to hunt down the full size ones unless it is something exceptional they wish to see. The image share is flooded as it is - to the point it is fairly impossible to keep up. To keep the community engaged in it they need to see it as being manageable. Everyone posting 5 separate images a day just floods it even more. Showcases let you really highlight a mod (which I thought was the point of Nexus), an ENB, or just the beauty of the game (any game, not just Skyrim). A showcase, or story, engages the community; it brings people together and creates social ties and bonds; it promotes mod authors and ENB creators work to others; and it is a fun and enjoyable aspect of the Nexus site as a whole. Why nexus managers thought it would be a good idea to make a move like this somewhat baffles me. I do hope they reconsider as Nexus is one of my favorite spots online and one reason I have always supported it both with membership dues as well as promoting it to my friends and people online. EDIT: Edited a couple of times to fix typo's, add a couple of other thoughts I had about the subject, and keep the post more even-keeled now that I have had some time to think about it.
  10. Ah great news to read this has been fixed!
  11. I adore Nexus, it is my favorite online site and has been for a long time, but it is just so insanely frustrating when you spend hours, in some cases days or even weeks, preparing a massive showcase or big story ... and you finally post it ... and then it gets cross linked to another image from another user and all the comments start to go between them. It is amazingly confusing as well as frustrating when you loose so much time. Twice in just one week this has happened to me and both times I had to delete everything and redo from scratch. Even if a mod can fix it by the time they do its usually to late. Sorry I just needed to vent for a moment. I know they are all over-worked, under-staffed, and dealing with the big server migrations and all the changes ... but uggg. So annoying and frustrating.
  12. This bug can be replicated at will and is one of the easiest things to ever duplicate. SO glad someone made a thread on this as I keep forgetting ... and hoping it would be addressed. Starting to get really annoying. Thanks for looking into this matter!
  13. Keep up the great work and we can ride out the storm in the mean time. In regards to the text (HTML/ASCII) bug it is totally reliable and repeatable when posting a picture on Nexus using the add image link. If you use things like apostrophe, quotes, or exclamation marks in the description box you get the code equivalent for it every time.
  14. Thanks so much for all the hard work you and the crew do for everyone - greatly appreciated!
  15. Not sure if this is what you mean .. but I am very keen on playing the game in an immersive and lore friendly way. My first character was a very typical Nord warrior named Ulfr Bjorn. That was with vanilla skyrim and I completed all content. I guess you could say he was my standard Dragonborn, although I role played him. My second character was more specific and I had a very small set of mods (only 7). His name was Varg the Reluctant Paladin and he was an Orc. He did none of the main quests. His entire focus was being a slightly different type of Orc (one that related well to the archivisit in the college). He became a reluctant Paladin in that he mastered the arts of Restoration and completed the mage quest line. However his main focus was serving Meridia and fighting vampires and other undead. He did all the Dawnguard content. He was level 45 when I retired him at the College and all of his content was around undead, helping the innocent/poor, and showing Skyrim that Orcs can be noble and honorable in different ways. My third character, who I am playing now and will probably be my canon and favorite, is Kveldulfr Thunor Fenrirson (The Evening Wolf, Son of Fenrir, he who speaks with thunder) and his is heavily modded with my own custom mods as well as over 130 from Nexus - all of them based on visuals, textures, and immersion and keen on keeping lore and true to the atmosphere. He has a very elaborate story and very fleshed out. His lineage dates back to Atmora and a clan of Nords that followed a spirit of winter, wilds, wolves, and hunters. Anyhow I will quote just one section I have on him from my website. I have custom mods that revolve around his role as a Son of Fenrir and a Wolf-Blooded. I play him as if he is really there, a mix of both myself and the persona that my character seems to be develping almost indepenetly of me in a way. The more I write and play him the more he defines himself. It is loads of fun and adds huge layers of immersion to the game experience. Source: Classified Archives of the Thalmor War Council Date: 4E 201 Author: Justicar Arkved Category: Nord race referred to as the "Wolf-Blooded" Persons of Note: Kveldulfr Thunor Fenrirson http://home.comcast.net/~thunor/images/hosted/skyrim/wb1_sm.jpg Wolf-Blooded: Most scholars have written off the Wolf-Blooded as mere folk lore among the lesser races, pointing out how the last record of them having ever existing is in the Late Merethic Era to around the time of the Night of Tears. Our researchers, however, know that the reason they died out was in large part due to the extermination efforts of our ancestors. Since this was done in secret few records remain of the Wolf-Blooded race and their abilities. It was believed they had all died out when powerful magics bound their patron, the spirit Fenrir, deep into the heart Nirn long ago. Like many legends and myths the origins of how they were created are not consistent and even our ancestors were not sure just what exactly they were dealing with. Many believe it was a powerful Daedra Lord, even though none of our investigations have resulted in any backing for this theory. The most commonly referenced theory is that their patron was called Fenrir, and that he was some form of nature spirit, a guardian of the wilds, wolves, and other canines. He was also particularly fond of the Nords and had a small cult following of them. This nature spirit arose during the creation of Nirn, when the trickster, Lorkhan, died long ago, giving his life to create Nirn, and tricked the other Aedra into giving up their Divinity*. It is neither Aedra nor Daedra, but something different - a living embodiment of Nirn somehow created from the energies released in the making of Nirn ... at least that is one of theories we have come across. Our records indicate that this spirit would often mate with a a mortal, often a Nord priestess of Kynareth. Their off spring were referred to as the Wolf-Blooded, and were almost always male. While they had few children they did live an immensely long time. They were strongly connected to the earth, and often became rangers, rogues, and hunters, usually with some latent talents for healing and nature related magic. The old scrolls indicated only two pure Wolf-Blooded mating together could reproduce another Wolf-Blooded, hence why their children were so rare. Their cults and followers were hunted fiercely by our ancestors as these abominations were an affront to the Divine. Records indicate they were also shape-shifters and able to take on the form of a giant wolf beast, part Nord and part wolf. They were also said to be immune to disease and mostly immune to all forms of cold. http://home.comcast.net/~thunor/images/hosted/skyrim/fw_sm.jpg While Fenrir is thought to be some form of nature spirit, and hence amoral, it is recorded he had a fondness for the Nords and the Aedra Kynareth. Hence those who follow him tend to be brutal and violent but also strong in loyalty and honor, with a sense of protectiveness for those they consider to be part of their pack. It is said Fenrir takes on the aspect of a giant Timber Wolf when in warmer climates but he prefers the cold north, and then he appears as a giant ice wolf with blue eyes. His offspring follow the same pattern and their appearence tends to change depending on the climate they are in if they are there for an extended period of time. In winter climates they are fair skinned, grey or white haired, blue eyed, and have a white wolf aspect. For warmer climates they will have brown/red hair, tan skin, and take on the appearance of giant timber wolves. It is said their offspring partake of the earth and sky – as they grow older so does their power and their size, nourished by the world itself. The men in particular grow massive in size, should they live long enough, often reaching 8 feet in height at the peak of their power. Yet for all their mass and size they are amazing agile and quick. Another origin tale for Fenrir, and the Wolf-Blooded, speak of a lost Nord explorer who came across a giant frost wolf who came from one of the realms of Oblivion. He had been trapped by the machinations of one of the Daedric Princes. The Nord was able to free him, and in return for this favor, Fenrir let him drink of his blood. The tale indicates that the Nord's descendants became the Wolf-Blooded, and a cult grew around the worship of this spirit and his chosen ones. Another theory is that there was no such being and that it was only an aspect of the Daedric Prince Hircine that had appeared, bestowing his own form of lycanthropy on the Nord as a sign of his favor. Suurootan, our top researcher, has done his own research and was unable to come up with anything conclusive. He tends to scorn the more fanciful theories and feels it might just be a powerful form of magic, possibly from Hircine or some other Daedra or Aedra, that was cast on a cult of the Nords who referred to themselves as the Wolf-Blooded. However he also indicated one rare scroll does provide some credence to the guardian spirit, based on a binding ritual our ancestral mages cast. It talks about a powerful spirit that appeared shortly after the Night of Tears in a fury and it was said that the spirit was bound a great cost at that time. In regards to the present case of a rumored Wolf-Blooded appearing in Tamriel, Suurootan has found some proof that this may be the case. Kveldulfr Thunor Fenrirson (Kveldulfr Thunor, son of Fenrir) has many of the traits of a Wolf-Blooded and all stories, reports, and information gathered on him seem to point back this ancient race. The only thing lacking is an ability to shape-shift, but considering how hostile people are to werewolves he may be hiding this ability. How, and why, one of the Wolf-Blooded has returned is unknown at this point. The best guess has to do with the binding on the nature spirit Fenrir weakening, and that he is trying to protect his people and land from the invading Dragons, the Vampire menace, as well as our own influence in "his" land. Thus we believe Kveldulfr may be one of his offspring, possibly resurrected from the past, or perhaps he has some of the blood of Fenrir in his ancestry and Fenrir is trying to awaken his abilities. * In mer mythology, Lorkhan is called The Trickster, and the mer do not look kindly on him. They blame Lorkhan for tricking the other Aedra into giving up their divinity. This includes those who would become the Ehlnofey and thus the Aldmer/Altmer, who now blame Lorkhan directly for their mortality. Hence anything to do with Lorkhan, or men intermingling with the Divine, are considered an abomination and an insult to the Thalmor and most mer.
  16. Phew it isn't just me then, having the same issue and tried a few different browsers
  17. I had problems with it as well as I just did a clean install of win8 this weekend. I could only get Skyrim (vanilla) to run in windows mode on win8 and had numerous issues with SKSE causing a CTD everytime I had it installed (and I am have used it just fine for months on the same machine only win7 so I know the basics of installing it). In the end I just reformatted and went back to win7. Win7 is stable and works well with everything for me so will wait and try again this summer when maybe more kinks are worked out. I mainly did it as I was curious to see how things run. I suspect it had something to do with the Dx files and more fiddling would have probably solved it but I decided it was less hassle to just go back to win7 for now.
