  1. I thought I would add this comment about the new version of the NMM.

It works perfectly with Oldrim. However, with Skyrim Special Edition, it randomly uninstalls certain mods, while I'm in gameplay. Once uninstalled by the NMM, they simply cannot be re-installed. The use of LOOT after "re-installing" mods confirms this ... they don't show up. Checking the location of the game, and its data, proves that all of the data is still there. It just simply can't be re-installed on the NMM.

Has this been reported by anyone, before? Is there a fix?

    Thanks

  2. I guess that we can call this case closed.

I typed the console command "tcl" and "flew" over the place where the game crashed. It crashed again. So, I reloaded and "flew" around the mountain, landing at the exact location where you get the "Bleak Falls Barrow" message. I went on to kill the three bandits on the steps to the barrow.

Then, came the big moment ...

I saved (naturally), and walked through the front entrance. I waited a few seconds. No crash. I shot one of the bandits from a distance and killed her. No crash. The other bandit attacked me, and I got him on the run. No crash. Suffice it to say that I completely finished the Bleak Falls Barrow quests, without a single problem. It's the first time I've ever gone through the Barrow in Special Edition.

I hope that some of this helps other players.

  3. I realize that this won't be the first thread about this topic. I've tried ... over the years ... dozens of "solutions" for this. However ...

I was stopped in my tracks, on my last playthrough of the Bleak Falls Barrow quest. Note that I didn't even get to the Bandit Tower. About 200 yards away, the game always crashed. But had I made to to the Barrow, after killing the bandits outside of it, the game would have crashed within five seconds of entering the main gate to the Barrow. And so, I uninstalled SSE, and re-installed it. I carefully added my mods ... I know what works, and what doesn't. When re-starting the game, everything went perfectly ... until I reached the area close the Bandit Tower, where it crashed at the same location.

I have an Acer Inspire, with 64gb of System Ram, i7 7700 microprocessor (at 4.2ghz), an Nvidia 1080 video card, and am running the game at high priority. Follows my mods:

This isn't a heavy mod order, as one can tell.

I know that there are console commands to get the Dragonstone, and complete the Golden Claw quest. However, I'll gain upwards of five levels in the Barrow ... if I ever get there ... because I play at legendary difficulty.

Does anyone have the slightest idea what is going on? I've got the computer, the knowledge about using mods, and just about everything going for me, here. Note that I don't use FNIS or SKSE64 for SSE, yet.

    Thanks!

  4. I'll add to what Tragthemercenary is saying, Google CPU background, different OS have different ways of opening it. CPU background shows you what programs start running on computer start up. Half of that crap does not need to be running whilst in game, sorry. Also, I deactivate from the web prior to going into game and I run steam in offline mod.

With my old computer, I learned ... early on ... to run Skyrim in offline mode.

Yesterday ... for the first time ... I added ENB's to the game, and broke my rule about not adding or subtracting mods to the game. If anything, the game seems to be more stable than it was (not to mention gorgeous views!).

  5. tbh, you may not need PL and more fix your messed up rig. i have a weaker rig but skyrim runs like yours out of the Box.

    First of all:

Don't install the s*** Hardwäre producers tells you to. Mostly of this is bloatware.

Don't autostart s*** you don't really need. Most of them bloatware too.

For the best exp you neet the bare driver file and a sqeaky clean win10.

Windows 10 is dumb in guessing what needs the most priorirty. It is going a bit better with the "Gaming Mode" of the recent update (1807 afaik) but it needs still a hint.

Task Manager in Adminmode is all what you need.

PL is good for autosettings, because yes you CAN set this in the Regedit too but it is a HELL of Work to do so.

but like i start. you need to clean up your rig in the first place. PL only push the clutter to the side to makes your game run.

It took me a little while to understand exactly what you were getting at, but I agree that there's an awful lot of background stuff that's being run, at the same time that I'm gaming. This is why a relative who IS a computer geek is coming over to, today, to tell me what I can safely shut down, and exactly what needs to be running. Thanks!

  6. About 30 hours in, without a single CTD, Freeze-up, lagging, and so on.

The only issue I've had, so far, is that when I loaded a savegame, there was a crash before the game fully loaded. This has only happened twice. Everything else has been flawless, so far. I thought I would let everyone know my system specs, so that you can better make up your mind as to whether this is for you.

    Acer Inspire 64bit

    Nvidia GTX 1060

    Intel i7 7700 microprocessor 4.2ghz

    64gb System RAM

Like I said, I'm not a computer geek, so I thought that this computer would run anything on the market. It's been a frustrating process with Skyrim. This is the first time I've ever had smooth gameplay since I first started playing this game.

  7. A couple more hours of gameplay, and I went out of my way to push the computer to its limits. I never came close. Although I don't consider it a stutter, sometimes my player character pauses for about 1/2 second, and then it starts moving again. I'm convinced that these are places where the game would have crashed or frozen. But because it has so many computer assets devoted to it, these events don't happen.

When I've gotten up to about 100 hours with the Lasso, I might try Skyrim SE, again, using the program. I've never even got past the first chamber of Bleak Falls Barrow, without multiple crashes.

  8. I agree with jjb54.

The game should be fun, above all else. By starting out without any mods, you can get a feel for how the game works, and what it's like. There is absolutely NO MANDATORY way of playing the game. You can choose to become the Dragonborn, if you wish. Or, you can completely avoid that storyline, if you want, and become anyone and do anything your heart desires. The story of the game is completely up to you.

I always start out with the Dragonborn storyline, visit the Graybeards, and then go back to Whiterun and complete the Companions storyline. After that, I pretty much do anything I want.

NOTE: Once you start adding mods, come back and listen to what experienced mod-users have to say. Mods will change the game in dramatic ways, and could cause you to have to un-install and re-install the game, if you do something wrong. Don't download the Nexus Mod Manager, or the Mod Organizer, and then start adding everything that you see. ALWAYS check at each mod page whether the mod is, or is not, compatible with other mods. I speak from hard experience, here!

    Most of all, have fun!

  9. Curious to see some reports after a more extended period of time. Mind sharing how the game fairs 2 weeks or even a month from now?

    I will do that.

The "16 hours" I spoke of are with one mod load, and I don't intend to add or subtract mods. This is basically an experiment, and I will share results with the Nexus community, on a regular basis.

Two hours, this morning, with no problems!

  10. I'm not a computer geek.

That said, I discovered something that gave me a solid 16 hours of gameplay on Skyrim, without a single freezeup, stutter, or CTD. Not even a hint that anything was wrong. Note that I have no idea that this will work for everyone, and I have a high-end rig, and Windows 10.

I was frustrated because Skyrim is my favorite game. However, on a rig that runs Witcher III like a charm, with 64gb of system RAM, I couldn't keep problems that plague all of us with this game from happening. I did a lot of reading on the internet, and talked to real-life computer geeks, and this was the solution that I came up with.

First, I went to Bitsum's website, and downloaded the 64-bit version of their program Process Lasso. Once I got used to how it works ... and I advise anyone who tries it to read the documentation ... I went to the next step.

Second, I started Skyrim, and only went to the loading screen. This meant that the TESV.exe was running.

Third, I performed a CTRL+ALT+DELETE. The game went to the desktop (I could hear the music playing in my headphones), and I opened Process Lasso. I scrolled down the list of running operations, until I found TESV.exe. Once there, I set the program to run in "High Priority Always", and Input/Output (I/O) was set to "High Priority Always". Note that this means that I can turn the computer off, and when I turn it back on, and run Skyrim, it will still be in high priority. Also note that "High Priority" means that the computer is signaled to devote extra resources to the executable.

I then got out of the game, and restarted it. Skyrim ran like I always hoped that it would.

For example, just west of Riverwood, while heading towards the Standing Stones, there is a place where the wolves attack. 90% of the time, about halfway through the fight with the wolves, the game would either freeze, or it would crash. But now, I'm getting the kind of gameplay I have with Witcher III. Also, no freezes or lags in Whiterun, or in the numerous areas around the hold where problems would occur. I've fought the first dragon ... with no crashes.

The program can be found at Bitsum Technologies: https://bitsum.com/

I hope that this helps someone who really needs it. I'm actually tempted to use the High Resolution Patch, now (the last time I used it, I hovered around 2-25 fps!).

Where NMM gave us non premium-plebs a solid 1Mb, we now get 10% less.
Or are you granting us the 1Mb/s limit later on in development ?

    Thanks for your time

Tannin42 wrote: There was no change to the cap for non-premium users afaik.
Either the dl speed indicator in Vortex is inaccurate/calculates differently or it's actually causing a bit of a slowdown on the receiving end, though that would surprise me.
Have you tried calculating the average download speed manually? (measure the time the dl takes then divide the size of the file by the number of seconds it took)
DarkDominion wrote: good tip Tannin42, will use that...
    More on this later ....
    DarkDominion wrote: sorry, been busy...

look, my DL also tops a 1.1MB, so your reasoning is wrong.
if the 900kB is the new 1MB cap, how come I also get 1.1MB

sorry, the average cap is 10% lower than it was with NMM, or that was also a lie ?

Thanks for your work on Vortex, Tannin.

I was non-premium for a long time, and finally got tired of the long waits on big files. I bought a year's worth of premium, last week (after a couple of monthly buys). Next year, I intend to go "lifetime", and help some of the modders, financially.

Since I went premium, I downloaded "Beyond Skyrim", which is a very large file. I had it on my HDD in about two minutes. Besides short download times, I like the "Premium" flag on my profile! Besides that, it takes a lot of money to keep a website operating (think "The Total War Center & Forums"). If we wish to keep the Nexus functioning, "those who have" need to help out.
  12. I will download Vortex when it is released in a beta form. I don't feel competent to use it, at the present time. However, I am looking forward to using it. The NMM has been vital to my gameplay, over the years. I tried the Mod Manager, but I had so much trouble with it (probably due to my lack of understanding of how to properly use it). I'm a philosopher ... by profession ... and not a computer programmer or geek. I can tell you the ins and outs of Plato, but I actually had to look up "open source", today, to find out what it means.

I think that I've got using the NMM properly down to a science, and when and how to add or delete mods is no problem, to me. However, I'm very tired of "starting over", when it comes to certain games. Skyrim comes to mind ...

Gentlemen and ladies, take your time with Vortex, and I'll give it a go when it's a Beta, and ready for "the rest of us" to try!

    Thanks

  13. Hi

I get the same CTDs with SE that I get with LE. They are caused by the same mods.

I got zero CTDs with SE before I installed these mods. All the problem mods in my game spawn NPCs. The only CTDs that I am missing are the ones I got with Wet&Cold & Frostfall(I did not install Frostfall) in LE.

The more mods you add to your load list the chances of mod conflicts go up. 1 in 3 mods I try to install have conflicts & cause CTDs. SE has become a modding minefield since I past the 150 mod mark. After getting over the memory issues LE did the same thing.

Some persistent CTDs are caused by hardware/OS conflicts. Twice now I have had CTDs that have stopped my progress in a vanilla quest on my Windows 10 gaming computer. After failing to find a solution on the internet/forums I moved the save file to my Windows 7 computer & the CTD was gone. Both computers have the same mods installed.

I also feel the the games stability has been degraded by updates. I am not happy with the current situation & it is getting really tiresome.

The area shown on the map is really bad. It gets worse once you pass the alchemist shack. If you see the road disappear, don't save, don't quit, do a system reset. The hard crash that can occur in this area can damage/disable the USB controller on your motherboard. It can only be fixed with a bios reset. It is the same with SE & LE. This only occurred with my Intel P67 board that I used with my i7 2600k. My Z170 board experienced a freeze that needed a reset to get out of.

    Later

Thanks for your input, on this.

What are the mods that you believe are the culprits? I'd be interested in knowing ...

  14.

For the last several years, I've had a recurring problem with SSE, whether the game is modded or not, and over two very different computing platforms.

At several locations, beginning with Shroud Hearth Barrow, that game simply crashes. At the Barrow, it happens within seconds of entering the Barrow. Very often, after it crashes, I verify the local files, and find that several files are missing, and have to start over, again.

I thought my old computer was the problem. It was a 64-bit rig, but was not a gaming computer. After numerous upgrades, the crashes kept happening, at the same locations. And so, I bought a brand-new gaming rig ... and Acer Inspire with Windows 10, i7 7700 microprocessors, and Nvidia 1060, along with 16 gb of RAM. The crashes still occur, at the same locations. So, I upgraded system RAM to 64gb. The same crashes. I set the executable to high priority. The same crashes.

Note that I'm running Witcher III at the highest settings possible, without any problem, at all. Although Steam has been forthcoming with support for other problems, I've never heard back from them, on this, even after multiple attempts to get a response.

Does anyone have any idea, at all, what is happening?

I'd like to play this game, and use ENBs. But I don't want to spend the time making it all happen, when my player character enters Shroud Hearth Barrow, and 2-5 seconds later, the game simply crashes.

Oh man, that is really annoying and weird .... I am starting to believe that something inside the game ( not related to our load order or rig ) is screwing up with us. Last night, my game just CTD'd and I got a message : Skyrim Stopped working ... please report this .... suddenly, unexpected, just like that and I was walking on one of the roads near Windhelm ....

I have had CTD's in places I've never had before, freezes in places I've never had before, not even when I played in PS3 .... something is going on and it is not us.

I do not know if it is Steam no streaming the game at some times that causes it, or stupid Bethesda screwing up with this game somehow when they upgraded it, or if is SKSE, which has been commonly known as a necessary tool to make our game more stable.

Mi rig is : Nvidia 1070, i7-7700, 16gb RAM, Z170 mobo and Viewsonic 165 Hz monitor. So I can play any game in ultra and no problem. I have also played The Witcher, Dark Souls and even Fallout 4 heavy modded and no CTD's, I have the latest update on my Nvidia, mobo and Windows and I have my computer not to start some programs when I am playing and using only 66 mods in Skyrim and not the most common and problematic mods so I simply do not understand what is going on. This game has become a headache recently because I have tried not less than 15 different load orders, different amounts of mods and still, is not stable to be played during 10 hours without having a single CTD. Simple amazing !

As a former US President would say, "I feel your pain." But in my case, I really do!

The first time I played SE, it had never been modded, and I received it free. I thought it was the most stable RPG I had ever played. But now, I think that Oldrim is actually more stable. Also, I never had these problems with Oblivion. However, yesterday I got about 5 hours of gameplay in, with "only" six CTDs. They happened where they had never occurred, before. One second, I playing the game. The next, I'm staring at the desktop. The latest version of SKSE64 doesn't work (Silverlock tells me that my version of SSE is too advanced), and so I can't use any mods that require it.

However, if I were to play Oldrim, I could journey through Skrim for ten hours, if I wanted to, and not worry about a single crash. But I have a 64-bit system, and I want to play a 64-bit game. The graphics were stunning, yesterday ... while game was working.

I agree with you ... it is not us. I'm not a modder, but I know how to use the mods. It is not us ...

  16. Hello!

I've been in the process of moving all of my Steam games from the C: drive (which is an SSD) to the D: drive (which is a 1 TB SATA.

I have three games, currently, which I use the NMM for: Skyrim, Skyrim SE, and Witcher 3. As an experiment, I tried to get into the NMM to find SkyrimSE, and the program went wild and gave me all sorts of warnings.

Understand that I only use 6 mods on Witcher, and currently, none on SSE. However, I have about 152 mods active on SKyrim. I don't want to lose these mods or re-install them.

What is the safest method for moving the NMM on the HDD, without losing the mods that I have already downloaded?

    Thank you very much!

    Trag

  17. I've been a member of the Nexus for years, now, and this is the first time I've heard of Vortex. Is this being developed for Skyrim? It would be absolutely great, if it was. A group of mods to download to a vanilla game, all of which function well together, and make the game more stable. It's a dream come true (after many years of learning how and when to add certain mods). I've got the computer to handle just about anything. My favorite game is still Skyrim.

Please tell me whether I understand Vortex, or not, and let me know how it's progressing. Thanks ...

  18. Just for the last several days, I've been having tremendous problems with SKSE and SkyUI. Then, yesterday, I started the game and ... you guessed it ... it was working perfectly, as has been, ever since. Considering how easy it was to download both programs, a couple of years ago, and the difficulties making them work, it has been a frustrating process.

My suggestion is that Silverlock and the creator of SkyUI get together, as it were, and any future releases be thoroughly tested by BOTH sources, until any bugs are worked out. They are the masters of the two systems, but we are not computer geeks. Note that this was a kindly suggestion, with no anger towards either source.

  19. Thanks for the information.

I did what you said, and everything is smooth as silk at 60fps. I don't use an ENB. The funniest thing I saw, before, was when my horse leapt into the air and started swimming animations, and my character was doing swimming animations, just above him! They were both above the bridge leading east from Whiterun! Didn't seem to attract the notice of anyone around, though ...

I do use LOOT. I have manually re-arranged the Hothtrooper files, in order. For some reason, LOOT didn't do it for me.

    Once again, thanks.

  20. Recently, I bought a brand-new Acer Inspire gaming computer, and was disappointed, at first. My framerates dropped so low it was ridiculous. 1-3 fps in Dragonsreach, in a high-end computer?

Then, I started doing a lot of reading. It seems that when I installed STEAM on my new computer, and installed all the games, I installed all the bad stuff from my old computer, along with it. I uninstalled Skyrim ... which is my favorite game ... and deleted everything associated with it. This took the better part of a day. When I finished, I was astonished at the new framerates. In Dragonsreach, I was getting about 220-250 fps. Outside, in very heavy rain, the framerate was anywhere between 85-155 fps. Note that I'm running about 60 mods, right now.

Now, I have some problems. My player character walks along a road, and suddenly starts "swimming". There is a lot of audio problems (could be my old headphones, but I'm going to replace them, tomorrow). Flickering occurs quite a bit on the water, and in the distant mountains.

Is this game supposed to be limited to 60fps? If so, how do I accomplish that?

Any ideas would be extremely useful. I really don't want to see my character swimming up the road to Riverwood!

  21. I thought I would add my limited mod list. After deleting some 200 mods, I'm STILL having the CTD problem. I can't leave an interior space without a CTD. Here are my mods:

Nothing works for me. Absolutely nothing. And some of the CTDs cause me to have to clean the Update, Dawnguard, Hearthfires, and Dragonborn, all over again. I've even run the game in vanilla, after uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Nothing works.

    I'm at wit's end ...

PS Sorry about my mod list. I'm only running 30 mods, right now, and have MUCH MORE than enough computer power to run this game (I run Witcher 3 with no problems). Also, I should point out that I'm running Skyrim SE ...

  22. Friends, I wish I could do some modding. I don't have that ability.

I just bought the GOTY edition, two days ago, and I am completely blown away by this game. Currently, I have ordered a controller, finding mouse and keyboard inadequate for it. I expect to start playing again, this Thursday

@computertech82, I've noticed the same thing about the mods that you have. Another thing I've noticed is the tendency of come modders to create mods that enhance the ... shall we say? ... more adult aspects of the game. I'm not a prude, but Witcher 3 is great, as it is downloaded. If anyone needs anything else, go rent a xxx movie. I see no need for it, in the game. In Oldrim and Skyrim SE, I only added mods that added good faces to the ladies, who tended to be rather ugly in the vanilla games, and a few miniskirts.

Could you list your favorite mods, just for my information? And do you use mod merger, instead of NMM?

Given the popularity of this game ... and Hodor's enthusiastic endorsement of it ... I would have expected thousands of mods for Witcher 3, by now ...

  23. That's great. having an outdated rig that is most of the problem, in some cases , has to drive people crazy when trying to troubleshoot problems with game. Keep her cleaned on the inside, definitely looking into do's and don'ts for cleaning rig, "yeah I'm talking to you static electricity"

Thanks! I will watch the problem with static. I never even thought of that, but it can be a problem.
