Fallout 4: delusion or great game?
bobofudd replied to SignorNessuno's topic in Fallout 4's Discussion
There is no perfect game. There will always be some aspect that could have been done better. I started Witcher 3 right before FO4 came out. FO4 interrupted that but I periodically switch back and forth. I've never played any of the previous Witcher games and I was extremely frustrated at how complex and confusing the menu system was. It just isn't very intuitive. However, the visuals and storytelling are outstanding. The characters are unique and the story sucks you in at some point (the beginning was a tad bit slow to me but I think that was due to the learning curve and navigating the menu system). Enemies are challenging, even at lower levels and the game is fairly balanced with a much slower pace than what we see in Bethesda games. The most notable though is the voice acting. Probably some of the best I've seen in a game yet. I don't feel as if it is a true open world experience though like the Bethesda games, but it does serve as a great alternative. W3 also demonstrates that Bethesda should have upped their quality a long time ago. W3 pulled off a great boat system that should have been in Skyrim or even FO4. There just isn't any excuse. Their games are fun but they could be so much more if they would just plan a little better. -
Fallout 4: delusion or great game?

Maybe this is part of the problem with Bethesda and Fallout 4. Their games are in development for far too long (for what we end up with) and technology evolves midway through, leaving them with an even more outdated game than what they started with. At the pace technology does evolve, no company I think, could remain head of the curve and still provide a game playable to the masses when they are finished. Do you stop development and start over, making people wait for a decade? That's not a very good plan for making money to keep the company in business. I wouldn't hold it against them for something like that happening as the unknown is hard to plan for. But if you start development with an already outdated game plan, then that's something else. -

I've recently changed the look of a few of my npcs for Singing Settlers using the slm command. I ran into issues like not being able to change the hair or facial features and some features not working at all. I basically just stuck with applying makeup. Then afterwards, the same npc would be invisible or stop singing. They also lost collision although I think reloading the game fixed that. It's nice to be able to do that but it really isn't all that reliable. A lot of things can go wrong. -
Fallout 4: delusion or great game?

In its vanilla state, the game needs to be put back in the oven to bake a little longer. It was a good start with a good foundation but we just ended up getting a cake with no icing. Bethesda had a lot of great ideas with this game but everything from the story to the building pieces in the workshop seemed to be only partially executed. I think we all agree the story fell flat. They just didn't address it enough to make it interesting. I found myself not even caring about trying to find my kid once I got out of vault 111. Once you meet the minutemen and start the settlement building, it's all about keeping those settlements going. And if you are one of the people who didn't like the building, then you find out that this game doesn't have much else to offer. The factions didn't really draw me in either. Right from the beginning, you're introduced to the Minutemen. They are the only group that has a true mission related to game play....rebuilding the Commonwealth. Anything past that I felt the choices were just dumped on you when you haven't had any real emotional experiences to draw you in and help you choose a side. The workshop was a great idea. It was risky to base the game on something people are either going to love or hate but for what it is, I think they succeeded in introducing a new mechanic that shows a lot of promise. In its vanilla state however, I'm puzzled at how they went about choosing what pieces to give you to build with. Too many times have I tried to build something that I couldn't complete because that last piece you need doesn't exist (see my mod request thread about the missing barn roof piece to get my point) or certain pieces that only snap together one way. It was as if they built something to how they see it, then deconstructed it and gave you all the pieces. But all those pieces we got end up building the same thing again and a again. Maybe the building aspect took them by surprise. I've seen progress in quality with each workshop released but if you spent so long planning your game to be based around building, how could you not include a buffet of pieces that all interact with each other from the beginning? Did all of the testers over the years end up building the same thing? Because we certainly did. I certainly would have liked to have seen a little more thought put into the building side of things. They could have even worked that more into the main story and made building more important with an actual effect on the outcome of the game. That being said, I do have about 950 hours into the game. That's more than I had in Skyrim and I haven't even finished the main story line yet. I love the building aspect of the game because I'm naturally a creative person. Some of my biggest settlements are starting to rival Diamond City. But this couldn't have happened without mods. I just added Singing Settlers the other day and now I'm back into the settlements rebuilding and designing and installing concert venues. This kind of material should have been in the game from the start. Is this game a delusion? No, certainly not. It's a fun game that has a lot of potential with the right mods. Is it a great game? I wouldn't exactly say great. It's a good game. I just expected a little more out of Bethesda this time and they didn't quite get there. The game definitely has more potential then what they cared to achieve. -
I was building last night and happened to notice the simple design I was trying to accomplish could not be completed. The roof pieces to the barn, the slanted roof sections to be exact, cannot be arranged in a way to complete an "L" shape. They give you the outer corner piece but left out the inner corner piece. This isn't a complex design. It's a simple 90 degree turn. It's simpler than the barn designs we can make with the already given pieces. I'm not really sure why Bethesda would have left this piece out when you would be able to make a lot of different things with it. Any capable modder out there able to make such a piece?

I have a really hard time accepting the idea that Bethesda would alienate a whole community that helped sell and make their games so popular. Their games are fun in a way no others are, yet they are very unpolished and I'm sure Bethesda is aware of it. They definitely wouldn't sell as well in their vanilla state. If they happen to squeeze the Nexus out of the picture in the future, that's a majority of the community that polishes their games for them. I imagine many of you modders would leave the scene entirely instead of conforming to their rules and regulations (and censorship). That would only hurt them in the long run. How could they offer mods for consoles if a majority of the pc modders left the scene? The only answer I could see to this is that the vanilla standard for their next TES or FO game will be greatly increased. But it still seems highly unlikely to me.

I built a huge 3 level barn at Dalton farm in Far Harbor and in the top of the barn is a loft (4th level technically) where all the beds are. It turned out really cozy looking and the first two settlers that were there had no troubles going up to their beds. After the other settlers arrived though is when things started to go wonky. They eventually stopped climbing any of the barn stairs even if I was directing them where to go step by step. For some reason they couldn't recognize the barn stairs as something to get to the next level. Then, going up to the second floor wasn't a problem but they failed to recognize the second set of stairs. To try and help them I built an outdoor stairway that went directly from the main floor deck to the upper loft where the beds were. This made the path even easier to get to but they still wouldn't approach the stairs. The good thing was that they were still assigned to their beds and were technically happy.....but they weren't actually sleeping, just standing on the second floor where the shops were and where they thought their beds should be. And then upon finishing Far Harbor and going back to help the settlement, I discovered everyone was using the stairs and reaching their beds as they should. It completely baffles me why they had such a problem in the first place. The only thing I could offer would be that maybe the AI having to deal with so many settlers needing to use the same path at the same time creates a sort of gridlock to where everything just freezes and never gets resolved. Maybe opening up the second path and giving it time to sort things out helped out in the end but I'll never know I guess. I'm just happy it works now. I really liked the way the settlement turned out.

There must be several things conflicting with Far Harbor then because I'm not running Scrap Everything and still have a few distorted faces and multiple settlers. I'm guessing it's not Better Settlers because I could update that and everyone in the Commonwealth looks fine. My problems seem to happen in Far Harbor with settler faces that I think are from The New Settlers.

Not really sure if trolling or... that's like comparing apples and Dodge Caravans. On a serious note though, I don't feel FO4 resembles anything reskinned. Yes, it's another Fallout game but it doesn't play the same as the previous releases. That means Bethesda's games are evolving. And yes, we seem to have lost some of the good traits the previous ones had but we gained a few new ones as well. That's bound to happen when trying new things. Hopefully, Bethesda will learn from this and their next big release will contain the best of both to be a truly outstanding game.

No. I thought about putting it on but since I never got the other two mixing right I didn't bother.

I noticed this problem too when I played through Far Harbor. I have Better Settlers and The New Settlers installed with a compatibility patch which was supposed to bring a large variety to the settler appearances. Instead, I got only 4-5 different settlers with multiples of 4. And a few of the women have disfigured faces. You don't notice it much from a distance but when you walk up to them and look, they are extremely ugly. I tried to update TNS with the latest compatibility patch but in order to do that, I need to uninstall the old and when I do, the game refuses to start. So for now, I just left it the way it is. I haven't tried that but it sounds like it may be worth a shot. I'm guessing though, it would pull the same appearance since I keep getting multiples at the same settlement.

Skyrim was a beautiful game that was paired with a great soundtrack. It was fun just to roam the landscape and explore the sights, even if there was no quest to finish, which made it feel so much more alive. Fallout 4 can't really use that same formula as your dealing with the aftermath of total destruction and decay. The adventure is still there but after a while I think it gets a little depressing when everything around you appears dead. They did a much better job with the color palette this time around as I thought FO3 suffered from a very bland palette where everything in the game felt the same from start to finish. The soundtrack, however, wasn't even close to being something of Skyrim's. I saw a mod review of Resurrection (which has been taken off the Nexus) a short time ago and was wowed at how much it transformed the views in FO4, making it much more dynamic and interesting.

You keep saying this in almost every post. It seems you're quite convinced of your own speculation. As for the rest of us.... I think we're going to need some proof of this direction you keep speaking of. If not , then you're just like the person on the street corner holding a big sign saying "the end is near." -
Request: Starlight drive-in buildable on top of the screen.
bobofudd replied to 0piuM's topic in Fallout 4's Mod Ideas
I'm not running any mods that would change that ability and I was able to put the radio beacon up there with a small generator when I first got there. Not sure why you would be having a problem with that. -
If I was fast traveling I'd obviously not want to be interrupted with a battle or else I would of taken the long way there. Seems kind of counter- intuitive. If you're looking for more encounters try War of the Commonwealth http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/12395/? It's completely customizable to your liking. i have mine on the lowest settings and I still run into all sorts of stuff wherever I go. Makes the Commonwealth much more alive.

Maybe by then you won't have controllers but you'll link your smartphone directly to the game. So that way you'll play an entire game while looking at your phone the whole time. Stupid future... -

How to use the new power conduits from Contraptions?
bobofudd replied to Stargazer09's topic in Fallout 4's Discussion
I thought they weren't working right either when I tried to use some of the junctions on the ceiling. I also had a little bit of trouble because I was trying to run a line from a core generator inside a barn to the outside. I put the pass-through through the wall and ran the line across the ceiling right next to the conductor on the generator. But I couldn't connect the two because it turns out the generator was too tall even though I could see the entire conductor clearly, the wire being attached was considered too tall. I had to move the generator up a floor so the roof area gave enough clearance. I've enjoyed my time in FO4 but for the life of me I can't figure out how Bethesda came to a conclusion with some of their design decisions. Couldn't have made that generator just a hair smaller could you Bethesda? I throw that in the same category as making level 3 trader stands that were designed for outside use only knowing that everyone was going to want to put them indoors, especially since they are required to achieve maximum happiness. -

Messed around with the new stuff a little and the biggest thing I can see, for me that is, is the pass-through conduit that lets you pass electricity through walls. That's huge and will give you the ability to clean up all of your wiring in your settlements. -

I tried installing this at midnight (US EDT) and it wasn't available. Waited until 1 am and it still wasn't available. I left and played Witcher 3 for a bit but checked again right before bed around 4 am and it was finally available. I haven't had a chance to look at everything yet though. -
What's the happiness at the lighthouse now? I'm curious to know if synths will bring each other's happiness down.
-
This has already been done with the Fully Customizable Outfits mod by Hunk92. I would post the link but the mod is hidden right now due to imcompatibility with latest patch.
-
I can confirm that they sleep because I just found a sleeping synth at the Slog last night. I noticed happiness was lower than usual so went to investigate. As soon as I sent him off to Hangman's Alley (Where I've been sending all found synths) the happiness started going back up. I see him eat power noodles all the time. It always makes me laugh when I see him eat because it makes me imagine a pile of food in his pants legs.
-
I wish they did. Even the slightest hint would help. Every time I ask i just get the generic " Can't say anything comes to mind" answer while I check the happiness level with the red arrow pointing down. Something like " [insert generic settler] has wet their mattress again and isn't using their bed. Could you get them a new one? " would be hilarious. Or how about "[insert generic settler] is stuck in the corner again and can't find their way out. Could you rebuild the entire settlement or use your magic to free them from their misery?" Or even " [insert generic settler] hasn't pooped since arriving at the settlement. We think they might be a synth."

Witcher 3 was suppose to have mod support but I think they backed out right before it was suppose to be released. Or they released a not so good version of it. I do have a few mods for my game but they are pretty simple.
