I recently reinstalled Skyrim SSE and noticed a new problem which I dont think I faced the last time I played it. While playing the game, if I unplug my headphones, the game freezes indefinitely, no sound or anything. I have to close the game via task manager and restart with my headphones plugged in. Also if I start the game with headphones disconnected and then connect them while playing, the game doesnt seem to detect them and keeps playing the sound to the speakers. However, windows seems to play sound through my Headphones. My audio drivers are up to date and I dont think this problem existed before. Any way to fix this?

I have got a similar problem, if I disconnect the analog sound cable to my screen (3.5mm plugs) while the game is running, the game crashes.

and if I use sound via HDMI instead. the sound is lost if my computer enters powersave mode.

(sound in windows works, but no sound in skyrim until reboot of computer)

Same here. This is a very frustrating bug, especially when your headphone chord is old and sometimes unstable... Has nobody found a fix yet?

In my experience it's a problem with Bethesda games in general, or at least with Fallout 4 and Skyrim SE for which I know to always exit my game when I get the beeps telling me my blutooth headphones are about to run out of charge. If my headphones turn off for any reason while my Bethesda game is running, the game doesn't freeze immediately, but it does freeze, presumably when it tries to play a sound.

This does not happen with games like Black Desert Online or Grand Theft Auto Online. So it's a flaw in the game engine for Bethesda.

I've got more than 12000 hours using this problem with Bethesda games. I just cope by being aware of it and making sure to close the game if I think my headphones will turn off.

You might try this mod, I haven't tried it myself but it could fix your problem

Auto Audio Switch

That worked beautifully, ModEnjoyer52. Thanks a ton for the suggestion.

I just tested it, starting with headphones, turning off my headphones, switching to television speakers, turning the headphones back on and reconnecting them, and not only did the game not lock up, but the sound switched back to headphones. Thanks a million 🙂

(I'll be sure to return to the mod page later to endorse it once Nexus allows it.)
