Entire town throws their life away because i stole an apple?

can't stand when EVERY npc will take one look at the 20 dead bodies that came before them, and still carelessly throw away their lives...all because i stole a chunk o bread. what is this, Les Mis? and sheathing my weapons in "apology" doesn't always work.

is there a mod that'll address this? a decent apology system would be ok. Fable games had one that was alright. or maybe a tier system. guards fight until 5 are dead and then if theft was less than say 200 gold they'll see the foolishness in it, at least until you enter the town again (or a different town, tho i hate how towns miles away will know about your theft. i mean, getting a carrier pigeon ready takes longer than i can trot to some towns). so any type of mod for this?

As recently as 200 years ago people used to get transported for 7 years for stealing loaves of bread or silk handkerchiefs.

Use the console to (a) stop combat alarm on the player, and (b) stop combat:

player.SCAOnActor

player.StopCombat

oh i realize that the law could be doggedly upheld. as i stated, i have no problem w/ the bounty being persistent and my toon always being sought after until i make it right. bounty hunters sent after me and the like. i meant that human nature would above all, prevail. and eventually after enough deaths, hostiles would be like "nah this ain't worth it" . even guards.

i've found some crime overhaul type mods that have a more reasonable crime radius, stop animals from calling alarms (wth Beth??), and even make guards wary and follow you if they see you sneak. but i think it'd be better if there was a "tier" system in place. sorta like if your fine is around $25 and u talk to a guard. they'll say "hey i know you! you're wanted" and you can ask them if it's really worth their time. like that but more encompassing, and something that controls their level and longevity of aggression.

thanks much Steve for those console commands (and your other work!). in fact, that apology feature in Fable i spoke of, i bet commands similar to those are triggered when one apologizes. any way to set those commands to a hotkey? a mod like that would be nice.

oh and anyone know the exact way the "apology" weapon sheathing works in this? it doesn't work consistently for me. seems i can accidentally strike someone, sheath, and they'll non aggro. and that's about the only time i've seen it work. maybe that feature could be extended to not just damage to 1 individual but to all crime?

All this progressive idealism is heartwarming, but it doesn't really fit the Skyrim world. Honestly, I wish the game was more regressive. In other words, you steal an apple, the whole town goes berserk and tries to kill you and your entire family and everyone who likes you. The only way to escape the mob is to run to a city of "refuge" and hope you don't get killed by one of the many subtle cutthroats that infest cities of that nature. Now, that would be nice and primitive. More like the way I imagine Skyrim should be.

I have to disagree with you, gsmanners, on one sole basis... your character is the dragonborn! He saved Tamriel form Alduin and his evil dragon legion, he's joined the thieves guild, he's a member of the dark brotherhood and he's leader of the companions. He's kinda all-powerful, so it's a little un-realistic to any extent that people would say "That guy's so powerful... oh, wait he stole a gold coin from that shopkeeper. Let's all attack him. I mean it's not like he killed Alduin or anything!" LOL. But, do you see my point?

@OP I believe there should be something where if you have a certain level of bounty, then all citizens and guards will flee either away from the city itself or into their homes and lock their doors... maybe like a 10K bounty cap and then every time you enter the city, the streets will be barren as a desert until you somehow pay ff your bounty and prove you're not as ruthless as you came across. I get exactly where you're coming from. I once had a playthrough where i literally killed Every. Single. Guard. In. Whiterun... LOL. Not a single guard or non-essential NPC was left. It was fun, but oh, so unrealistic!

Yeah....the crime system has not changed that much since Oblivion, in spite of the fact that people have complained about it ever since. Why is it that a merchant can't distinguish one stolen septim from another, but won't buy a stolen apple from you because it has a digital fingerprint tag? With a killable children mod, I can slay Balgruuf's kids in front of him, and then surrender to the guards to pay off the bounty. That's just funny...

Hmm....the crime system didn't change that much since Oblivion but it did change slightly for the better....there -are- 'tiers.' There are different levels of fines for murder, assault, and theft (adjustable to individual holds, even). The fine for stealing is proportionate to the value of the item you were caught stealing. You -can- tell the guards that it's not worth their time if you are a thane in that hold. You can also bribe them if your character's speech skill is high enough. Aside from the fact that you can kill anyone (who can be killed) and pay a simple fine to clean the slate regardless of who you are, and that you can clean the slate by serving time in jail (which is actually a 'modern' concept of punishment), the crime system in Skyrim is working fairly well.

Think of it this way. You are not committing a felony if you try to pocket one apple from a grocery store, but if you pull a weapon and threaten the store owner after you are caught, start shooting at the cops who show up, you are accumulating criminal violations that move your 'theft' into entirely different territories.

You are right. The more famous you are, the less people would care if you commit crimes. If the president of the United States was caught stealing an apple from a grocery store, or got sexual 'favours' from an intern (which is not even a crime anyway), no media outlets would bother to report these things, make a big deal out of them, and no one would call for the president's resignation. I mean, when was the last time you heard about a celebrity getting arrested for DUI or shoplifting? It's not like famous people get scrutinized more than average nobodies, or anything....

adultery is still a crime in most places. there's also laws about abuses of power. scandals aside it seems pretty reasonable that these fiesty nords would want to cut you for stealing, there's a war on and they only have about 10 cabbage patches to try and feed everyone with. the crime system is only in place to validate the stealth skills that constitute the 'realism' portion of the game.

though, i guess a mod that works like athmoors vamp/dragon ones would be cool; i expect people to run when i decide to go on a crime spree. it always ends up with an immortal old lady and her stupid little iron dagger, for ever..
