Guest kfmccall
Is anyone interested in enriching their lives with art? Your all capable of drawing; its like anything else, a matter of practicing well as well as repetition. I'm willing to work with everyone here on the forums to improve your drafting so you could apply for a position on the team if you'd like, or just find another skill thats an enjoyable time-passer besides the T.V. I know from being on this mod, my drawing has improved greatly since first joining about a year and a half ago. Remember that every sketch you do improves your skill in art. Drawing also provides a perfect timeline (as long as you date your sketches) for you to look back on and see how much you've improved. I could post up some basic ways to set up perspective for environments and some advice on drawing characters and objects. Everyone could post examples throughout the weeks in this forum, and we could all give healthy critiques and advice to help eachother improve our skills in sketching. I usually visit the forums every day unless something extraordinary occurs, and I see it as a great opportunity to train and possibly recruit some CA's for the team, though I'm not doing this for only that purpose, I just want to improve my ability to communicate information rather than just perceive it. All skill levels should feel free to post, for we all at one time drew stick figures, and we've all got to start somewhere. Also, if this thing gets going, don't look to me as some all-knowing draftsman, for i've only been drawing seriously since i joined this mod. You should see the work I posted for my application. Its horrid! ALso, We could have a monthly drawing topic so we all can contribute drawings revolving around the same idea, thus allowing us to build off of eachother's ideas for that given topic. So what do you guys think?
Kaningutten
A great idea kfmccall! And truly a generous offer/proposition! I have little to no experience in drawing, but I am very interested in learning... I do not have a working scanner right now, so for me to submit anything would prove difficult, but I would very much like a few tips and pointers! I have many times found myself in need of better drawing skills recently, so this is great! Somewhat Off Topic: Why don't you start more such topics? For example you could encourage the fans to submit stories for use in "in-game" books... I'm sure there are many talented people out there that wants to contribute, but doesn't want to make any commitments. You could start topics discussing writing, scripting, modelling, etc. Surely this is a way for everyone to grow and gain experience, and also to make the public more involved in the mod... Anyway, just a thought... Back On Topic: I hope you get good response to this topic, kfmccall, so we might see some action here... I sign up for the class! Guest kfmccall
Ok, well i've been thinking this over, and I realize I can't devote much time to submitting sketches, for most of my time is spent on the mod, which other than school, is my top priority right now. The best way to improve drawing abilities is by doing, so each month i'll pick out a topic for everyone to base drawings on. Though that doesn't mean only draw what is picked out! Draw things for yourself as well. Weekly I'll give advice and submit some of my own drawings of the topic. But note that if the topic picked is of anything in Middle Earth, than I can't submit any drawings while the mod is in developement. But I encourage picking middle earth topics even if I personally can not submit drawings, for a lot of locations and subjects in tolkiens world are very interesting drawing bases. So picking this month's topic is the first step. Lets all throw some ideas into the pot. I suggest for September: Trees, Hobbits, and Still Life Objects. Make your suggestions! ThetaOrionis01
It's a nice idea, but isn't really related to MEMod as such. I've moved it to the existing Arts forum - the Druid's Garden - which I think is the appropriate place for art submissions.Hopefully it will attract a wider audience there, too. Manwë
Sounds like a great idea to me. Recently upon seeing some MEMod concept art, I've become interested in drawing... I've experimented with some things and found that I am better drawing with PhotoShop than I am with pencil... ^_^ Anyway, my drawing skills could use more than a little help...As far as the idea's for September, I like the hobbits. I've always wanted to learn how to draw faces...and hands for that matter..

suzerain
Well, from personal experience, I've found that the most important facet of work is, without a doubt, life drawing. the ability to observe a figure will carry over to every other element of arts, from design to sculpture. the additional advantage for life drawing is that while difficult, it's also satisfying when something comes out right - everyone knows what a person looks like, and the illustration of a figure therefore allows a base of reference that any person can refer to. For the subject already suggested, that of drawing hobbits, therefore, the most important matter is the ability to understand anatomy of the ideal human proportion - an artist cannot break the rules untill such a time as they are absolutely conversant with them. therefore, the golden means, the proportions of the human figure must be studied and observed. Therefore, starting with a human figure is essential to any plausible peice of illustration or design, on such a subject. Perhaps the reason I like that challenge, however, is the fact that whatever the subject, the actual execution of an image is so flexiable - from pencil, to pen and ink, to charcoal, to watercolour, to oil or acrylic, each depiction has a different texture and depth - My pereferred medium is compressed charcoal on Cold Press papers, with a vibrancy of texture and depth of line that's intense and fluid. I've enclosed an A2 sample of that (I like this thread, I can post up stuff that's not MeMod work for once), as an indication of observational illustration. Personally, I struggle on hands - always been my weak point through a decade of life drawing... What areas do other people struggle on, or want opinions on, then? post away... suz
ThetaOrionis01
just for the record i'm doing this to improve my drawing skills ..i don't want to be on the MEMod team ;)Just to clarify - this thread has absolutely nothing to do with MEMod. It is just a thread - albeit one started by a poster who also happens to be a member of the MEMod team - encouraging people to improve their drawing skills.
