MSI RTX 3080 Gaming Trio Z LHR first impressions

Recommended Posts

as i use a 4080 tuf in the meantime there are some experiences i can share:

disadvantages:

4080 is still overpriced but i decided to sell the 3080 while still getting a good price for it.

even the advantanges over the 3090 cards is no argument because it is a comparison of old against a new overpriced card.

i took the risk to buy it before the 79er amd cards had been launched and the 3080 dropped too much in price.

it is still a bad time to get nvidia 4k cards for a reasonable price...

advantages 4080:

-always true 4k power available(100FPS+), while the 3080 10 GB operated already at its limits

-no more hassle with vram limitation 16 vs 10 or 12gb, but if i watch the behaviour of all my 4k games i can't recommend any value below 16gb if you like to see Ultra HD graphics fidelity without stutter or compromises! cyberpunk with raytracing (not tested yet) seems to need all the extra nvidia features (see youtube). the 256bit vram bandwith combinded with a much more efficient and better cache seems superior to the older gen cards.

it is like with skyrim: both, sse and fo4 can fully utilize 16GB vram at least with my 4k ultra setup.

-low power consumption and efficiency compared to the 3080! while this is nothing new the difference is yaw dropping: fo4 ultra 4k it is 140 watts vs 230 and more while running with same settings, the 4080 is faster and smoother (both cards efficiency optimized).

-cold and silent operation (not only) during gaming.

I am suitably jealous. That is a NICE card. :D Would love to have one, but, still out of my price range.

Same. The 4080 is a nice card, but out of my price range.

I recently upgraded my backup machine from a NVIDIA GTX 770 to an AMD RX 6650 XT, mainly because the 770 does not support DirectX 12.

I plan to wait for the next generation of GPUs before upgrading my main machine from a 2070 Super. I hope that the 5070-series cards will have a better price/performance ratio than the 4070-series, but I am not optimistic about that.

I just bought the Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Elite 12G Graphics Card for $839 on Prime day '23' still a bit pricey but still well below RTX 390 and 490 prices. It holds up against AMD cards up to the 7900 xtx series. As far as Intel, meh. The Intel Battlemage is supposedly due out 2nd or 3rd quarter of '24' I've read that it should be a competitor for both AMD & NVidia when it releases.
