95PercentStruggle
So a couple of days ago Fallout 4 started having these completely random massive frame drops. The game will run perfectly fine and then all of a sudden I'll get massive stuttering and everything will be running at like 1 fps, and then it will just shoot back up to normal, and I have no way of knowing when it will happen, sometimes it'll happen within a minute of the last one, sometimes the game will run completely fine for 15 minutes until it happens again, and there's no change in conditions, I'm not enter a more intensive area of the game or doing something that would cause the game to slow down, it could happen during a fight or while I'm standing perfectly still in the middle of sanctuary. I've been playing the game for at least two weeks before this started happening and I know it's not mod related because it happened a year ago when I was running a completely different list of mods, and I have no idea how I got it to stop that time. I have no idea what's causing this and haven't been able to find a single other person with the same problem. monesq
You are not alone. There are several reasons for FPS drops, some because of broken previs data (scrapping or using mods that have scrapped objects) to problems with your computer itself. I have been dealing with this for some time and have not found a definitive, but I have improved things. Check out performance mods and ini tweaks, but be careful with ini tweaks. You can try this https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/44798 What I have found to be the culprit in my games as I have a decent rig (although it is a laptop) , is to check if your CPU or GPU is thermal throttling. Both my CPU and GPU were thermal throttling where they would reach a certain temperature point (in my case, anything over 79 degrees Celsius) so the computer actually slows down the CPU and/or the GPU until the temperature is below a certain limit. This explained in my case why I was having these stutters and/or micro stutters. I was able to correct this in my CPU using Throttlestop (easy to use program and plenty of tutorials that show you how to undervolt your CPU. In my case I actually saw a 20 degree decrease in CPU temperature and an increase in performance. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do the same with my GPU without a performance drop, though I am not as proficient with MSI Afterburner. I has been locked out of my bios advanced features (though I found a trick on-line showing how to show those features in BIOS) but there was no option to reduce the voltage to the GPU. I hope this helps as I can understand how stressful the performance issue can be with Fallout 4. Good luck.

95PercentStruggle
So for some reason the problems stopped the day after typing this, despite the fact that I still haven't changed anything. Literally the only difference is that a Buffout 4 update came out, but again, the game was running perfectly fine. I'm so lost.
