Pentium D to Core i7

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about the possibility of building a new computer with the following specs:

Intel Core i7 @2.66GHz (only one that's really in my budget range =P)

6GB DDR3 RAM

NVidia GeForce 9600 GT (bringing over from current system)

750GB OR 1TB 7200 RPM HDD w/ 32MB cache

430W PSU (also bringing over from current system)

Windows Vista Home Premium x64 (would need to buy again since it's a system builders version)

My current specs are:

Intel Pentium D 820 OC'd to 3.0GHz

5GB DDR2-667 RAM

NVidia GeForce 9600 GT

250GB 7200 RPM HDD (don't know cache; believe it's 16-32MB)

Windows Vista Home Premium x64

Not a huge difference with most specs, but I really need a better CPU, and my mobo doesn't support Core 2 Duo. So yeah, how's this plan look?

EDIT

Ah, crap, stupid typo in the title. >.> That's gonna bug me, I bet... D;

I suggest you go AMD its alot cheaper then going cough intel, especially if your into gaming. If your interested in getting yourself a bad ass card take a look at these cards. Note the 9600gt is an ok card in my opinion.

Honestly, AMD gives you more "bang for you buck" but the Intel i7 would be a breath-taking build.

Though if you're willing to drop the money on an i7 build, I would wait until you can get a card

that really pulls the potential out of it.

I used to have a 9600GT, and just yesterday I got my ATI Radeon 4850 X2 and the difference is unbelievable.

I would highly suggest a better card.

Now this isn't my thing, so I'm not sure about this. I'm partially hijacking this thread... >_>

Are there more differences to Processor lines than averages? I always thought that a 2.66 Dual Core Pentium 4 would be pretty much as good (Minus temps) as a 2.66 Dual Core i7. Is this wrong? What other real differences are there?

I think there's some difference about the memory it can utilize, but that's a very minor thing, to me at least.

With the i7 core Intel is doing something AMD was doing from beginning... let us say, doing more things at each clock cycle. Something like one CPU can do one complete register operation in certain number of clock pulses while the other can do complete operations in several registers and some others things in the same pulse's number. Just a gross example, of course.

I built my system. Its performance is unbelievable, even with my 9600 GT! I'll definitely be upgrading that sometime down the road, but in almost every game I get a constant 75 FPS - even Oblivion with some mods that make it look better! The Pentium D was a horrid CPU, and I'm glad I finally got a system that I can gladly call my own. Here's the specs I ended with:

Intel Core i7 920 (overclocked to 3.4 GHz)

6GB DDR3-1333 RAM

GeForce 9600 GT (definitely upgrading one day)

1TB 5400 RPM WD10EADS HDD (it's better than my old 7200 RPM; to my knowledge, it's the fastest 5.4K RPM HDD on the market)

Windows Vista Home Premium x64

All-in-all, I'm impressed. I max out Oblivion with no problem, Fallout 3 runs like a charm, GTA IV maxes out on it without so much as a stutter (but I have to drop textures to medium or else stuff drops out randomly :[), BioShock loads levels in a matter of seconds. Only game I don't run without a hitch is Crysis, but even then, it's a huge improvement.
