What do you think of this idea?

I hope this is the right thread.

So I'm a very basic modder, and I have an idea I may just execute.

I haven't seen any mods like this before on the nexus, so here it is!

A mod that adds generic towns and NPCs. These people won't have much to say, if anything, and the many towns will have some basic functions, such as taverns blacksmiths and merchants. Maybe add some random encounters, a few quests, and so on.

What do you guys think? Just to give Skyrim some personality.

And I mean a lot of small towns, not just 5 or 6.

Umm no.

Adding random encounters is good everyone loves them.

You could add more of those Tavern locations but not just near Towns but somewhere along the roads.

I think you misunderstood me, I mean to add new towns dotting Skyrim.

The problem with this idea is the final product would probably conflict with a considerable number of mods, given that you want to edit a rather large area of the Skyrim landscape by dotting it with towns.

I personally haven't found that to be the case.

From my experience, it's highly unlikely to find a mod that would use the exact same space as my towns. They would be about riverwood size, not walled towns.

The Immersive NPCs, Immersive Patrol mods etc already add a lot of NPCs and encounters and so on.

Part of the charm of Skyrim for me is the emptiness of the wilderness. It is PERFECT for playing a Druid or a Ranger or a Hunter. When I play a Thief or a Bard, I stick to the cities much more, but I LOVE my wilderness.

I personally would not want it dotted with towns and villages. And there is the problem with overlapping other mod edits, EG SkyTEST adds spawn points for predators in the wild, which is perfect for my Druid-Ranger characters. Anything you add that might overlap with those spawn points could cause problems, like Sabre cats spawning in the market and killing all your NPCs.

And I can build my own stockades, camp sites and even towns and cities with Pocket Empire Builder.

Also, many, many towns and villages with Voiceless NPCs would be weird. You say you are a very basic modder, so you will need to learn about NPC construction, AI packages, Navmeshing, actions and timings, EG getting up, having breakfast, going to work, having lunch, going back to work, going home, sleeping etc.

I'd try and make one village in the middle of nowhere and see if you can get it working in a believable way like Riverwood is believable before you try adding several dozen towns. It seems a bit ambitious if you have little experience with making mods.

Having said all that, there IS a location where three holds meet, between the mountains on the road between Whiterun, Falkreath and Markarth. It seems such an obvious place for a Stable, Inn and Blacksmith I always wondered why there is nothing there. There IS a dragon mound nearby, a bandit-controlled tower up the road and some wild animal spawn points.

But why not try making a single village mod for that area first? I'll certainly try it out, although I would not want a mod with dozens of towns, unless MCM could configure which ones are enabled individually.

You could even add drinking fountains with resources from Drinking Fountains of Skyrim with the author's permission: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/24282/

I thank you for this post. Very long and constructive.

Now, if one were to play a ranger, you could simply disable this mod. If I could figure out how, I would make a configuration menu in SkyUI.

I use SkyTEST, so I see the problem there. But I live under the rule that any problem can be overcome, and I don't think that would be a problem with a bit of fairy dust around. I'm a perfectionist, this mod would be fully tested and compatible with my VERY long mod list.

I am not afraid to learn, I didn't know how to mod before I became a very basic modder. And yes, that would be weird lol, they would have the basic Skyrim voices of course, just don't expect any good conversations. And yes, my strategy would be to get a town working, then add quests and voices, and then do that to another town.

Also, I downloaded both of the mods you said, they looked very nice. Thanks for all of the great ideas!

I actually think it's a pretty cool idea. I do kind of understand where the people are coming from when they say it doesn't really fit the game, yes I know Skyrim is supposed to be a giant open world with a lot of wilderness. But, I do also think it's kind of strange how every town feels just as significant to the story as the next. By that I mean; I feel like there should be some small towns that are insignificant, as to make Skyrim feel more real. Just like in real life, not every city will be as well known as Seattle or New York.

If you really are a perfectionist, like you say you are, I think you could make this mod work very well (I too am somewhat of a perfectionist, hence why I DON'T mod xD).
