What is the proper way to make an unofficial update to someone else's mod?

There is a New Vegas mod I like but hasn't been updated in years, and I've found an issue I (and more people as I've seen in the comments) find annoying.

 

What is the proper way to fix that bug myself? I was thinking about creating a separate mod but I'm not sure. That user seems to be inactive so I don't think I could reach out to them.

Try and contact them first. See what happens.

 

If that doesn't work, I *think* that making a patch for the mod, is allowed...... just needs to be dependent on the original. I think......

Make sure you check the permissions as well. The author might have left them open for modification.

 

Otherwise, as HeyYou says, the usual standard is that you can make a patch and you'll be fine unless the author comes back to request it be taken down,.
