TheTrueAwesome
does it matter where I buy the game. whether its through xbox game pass or steam? i have zero knowledge of pc gaming. so probably silly question
HeyYou
I think buying thru steam is likely easier to mod. MS tends to install games in non-standard areas, which makes modding the game more complicated.
Oblivionaddicted
Avoid the Steam games, you will be constantly forced to log-in and download "updates" before playing and moddingwill probably become an ordeal.

Yep, steam does seem to love it's updates, and wants to update itself EVERY time you fire it off.... Annoying to say the least. However, it is possible to leave steam in off-line mode, so, nothing does any updates. Not steam, and not your games. Some of the other versions of the games, Game Pass, Gog, etc, do other odd and strange things, like encrypting the executable, or non-standard install locations, that confuse mod managers, and just make mod installation rather problematic. 99% of the tools out today, are set up FOR the Steam version of games. (as initially, they were the ONLY versions of the games..... :) )
burbigo3
I play at steam games and I've never had issues with it
xrayy
i'm not a fan of steam and any other drm methods but at least it is usable and some games are steam exclusive. steam uses versions of games that can be outdated. you get no warning about that. example: fallout 3 european version. the downlod still includes ms gfwl version and dependency which makes the game crash with windows 10 because ms does not include gfwl since win 10 but some games do not work/start without it. that is not the way of support i would expect from a gaming platform. in worst case even steam gets its money but leaves the customer alone with such problems. the steam offline mode is not 100% reliable. it may work some time but you can not rely on it over a longer period of time due to already mentioned forced updates. I can't do squat on the internet without my say so. :D Works pretty good. I don't really see Steam as "DRM" though. That may be a tertiary, or Quaternary concern, but, it is easily bypassed, so Steam isn't required at all. (I am NOT advocating folks do that. BUY YOUR GAMES!) The whole "Games for Windows Live" thing was a non-starter when it was new. :) It was an incredibly bad idea, and history has shown that. GFWL has been gone for several years now... Didn't Beth release a patch to remove that requirement?? I thought it was on their website somewhere?
