Jenlyn Fayre
I have a dozen or more magic scrolls that I either found or bought. I went to use one of the spells and I noticed that most of my spells were "greyed out," meaning I couldn't select or use them. Sometimes I can use them and other times I can't. Why is this? Also, how do I increase my Destruction magic skill without paying boucoup $$ to trainers? Thanks in advance.
Switch
I'm not sure what you mean... are the scrolls greyed out, or your non-scroll spells? Obviously if you don't have enough Magicka to cast normal spells you can't but you'd already know that. :P Also if you don't have enough fatigue your chance to cast spells will drop like a stone. But I don't think that greys them out, even if your chance to cast hits 0. You can increase destruction using a training spell, or as some people call it a "cantrips". Just go to a spellmaker and make a spell that does 1 damage for 1 second or whatever, just make it really really weak and low on Magicka cost and buy it. Then keep casting it on the floor, up into the sky, whatever, and your skill will raise. Magic gains are determined from how many spells of that particular school you cast, regardless of strength, magicka usage, if you hit something etc. Just keep casting and you'll get plenty of raises. It gets VERY boring VERY fast though ;)

I didn't know you can use a spell over and over again. Don't spells just have just one use? I think I'll have to read up more on this. There are some things about magic in this game I don't understand. Like I notice I'll use a magic shield, but people are still able to damage me in spite of the shield! Switch
Greyed out scrolls? Hmm... tried using them anyway? Haha, no, spells have infinite uses, the only limit on them is the casting time (which is a couple seconds, can be interrupted by melee contact) and your Magicka. Oh, and Fatigue, as I mentioned before. And of course, you require enough magic skill in their school to cast them successfully. People will still damage you when you have a shield, magic or not. But with higher Block you'll have a higher chance of blocking blows and taking no damage.
Jenlyn Fayre
Hmph. What's the point of having a shield if they can still damage you? Wierd.
batesmotel34
A shield improves your overall armor class. (I think it's 10% of your armor rating.) It counts when it's equipped whether or not you're using a two handed weapon. You also have a chance to block, based on your block level, is using a one handed weapon or no weapon. (Using a spell is "Two handed" so no blocking.)
Abramul
One thing...you are probably better off doing a spell of Drain What-have-you on Self rather than on Touch or Target. No one hates you if they think you are trying to kill yourself.
Adras
THe ones that are greyed out are spells that arent in use. The ones that are colored in are rings, amulets, armour, clothing or weapons that you have on and have a magical ablility. Also if you have a spell ready, it should be colored in. Most of my scrolls are grey, a few are yellow. I think it's the yellow ones I can use.
