Peregrine
In modern society marriage is the christian marriage. It can't be between people of the same sex in principle. Fortunately christianity's idea of marriage is irrelevant. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. What part of "no law" is so hard to understand?
Indoril Nerevar
How is christianity's view of marrige irrelevent. it is what the standard marrige has been from the begining. Also in my view it is unnatural to be homosexual.

Abramul
So, how 'bout this: Anyone who wants (and is of age, and mentally competent, and not civil unioned) can become the spouse of their preferred partner. Leave 'marriage' as a simple religous kudo. We do need a better term than 'civil unioned'. though.

(sorry i cant get the quote thing right :embarassed: ) Indoril Neravar you said that the view of Christianitys view on marriage is what it has been from the beginning, please tell me your joking. Thousands of years before Christianity even came to exist, cultures, races and religions had marriages and ceromonies, Christianity did not by far create marriage, if anything it just incorporated it from other religions, far older than itself. You dont have to be Christian to be married, my parents are both Athiests are you saying that their marriage is null and void? If you think that modern society's view on marriage is a Christian one then you really need to open your eyes because believe it or not the world is a very big place with many religions! And no doubt many more will come and go and if or when Christianity does vanish then i'm sure marriage will carry on regardless.
draighox
Neither christianity's, nor islam's, neither hinduism's, nor any other major religion's term for marriage allow for homosexuals to be wed. If the union is between people of the same sex, it can't be called marriage.

Peregrine
If the union is between people of the same sex, it can't be called marriage. And why not? Because, like many people, he conveniently forgets about this concept of separation of church and state. He demands that his religion be the one to decide what marriage is, and this be the only legal option. Unfortunately, his side has the majority and can ignore the laws if it wants to.
