Advice for buying a new PC for modding Skyrim

So I´m planning to buy a new PC mostly because I want to mod Skyrim quite heavily while still getting decent performance. This is the computer that I am currently planning to buy:

 

GPU: Palit GeForce RTX 3070 GamingPro 8GB

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X CPU Tray

Cooling: Komplett H410R V2 Black ARGB AM4

Ram: Kingston FURY Beast RGB DDR4 3200MHz 16GB

SSD: Kingston NV1 NVMe M.2 SSD 1TB

MoBo: ASUS ROG Strix B550-E GAMING

PWR: Corsair RM750 750W PSU

My biggest concern is that getting only 8 VRAM will be a mistake but at the same time the cards that have more VRAM are so much more expensive and I am unsure if it´s worth to pay that much more for the extra VRAM.

 

For reference to prices this computer will cost me about 1800 USD.

I am pretty sure you will not have a problem, I have a 3800x, RTX 2080 liquid cooled (by manufacturer), BUT I have 64 GB of 3600 mem. I run my game at 2560x1600, and went crazy on visuals via DYNDOLOD (I will pare back in my next LO), in a LO w/over 600 plugins, with only occasional stutter or jitter, but limit my game in the driver to 58-59 fps (max for my monitor). My only suggestion would be to get 32 GB of memory, if possible, since I have seen memory caching of 18+ GB with these settings through Skyrim Performance Monitor. So, if you want a lot of graphics detail, make room for the game to cache it.

Yeah, that machine should run Skyrim without issue. Either version. :) More RAM probably isn't absolutely necessary, but, it sure won't hurt. So far as I am concerned, there is no such thing as "Too Much Ram."

Personally, I would recommend more RAM, like 32G. Sixteen GB is the minimum, but you may experience performance issues, especially in and around cities. Remember that VRAM overflows in to RAM when VRAM is full. Read more here.

if you like to play 4k res and with beyond ultra settings plan with a 3080 12GB , cpu is ok. my 3080 with 10GB VRAM is fully utilized with this game, it runs also ok but i would not bet this is the case a 3070 with 8GB. 3070 users should know better. you may encounter more stutter especially if you like enb effects and extreme shadow and terrain manager ini settings. plan with plenty of ram, at least 32GB if you want low stutter with high res textures. if you play lower res your planned rig seems to be ok.

I run an i7 9700KF, a RTX3070 8gb, and 16 gb ram. I don't have any performance issues at all. Of course, I don't run any 'prettification' mods either. (ok, I Do use 'green commonwealth', or something similar... but, that's it.) I also run Fallout at UGrids 7, I run Skyrim LE at ultra as well, and ugrids at 9. No performance problems there either. My Framerate seldom, if ever, drops below 40. Gameplay is butter smooth, and view distance is awesome.

 

I tried running FO4 at ugrids 9, but, I got a fair bit of screen tearing with that..... but, I have a significantly meaner vid card now (that was on the old 1060 6gb....) I haven't tried bumping it again since the upgrade, but, I am pretty happy with the game as it sits. I still run into targets that simply don't even notice I am shooting at them, till I move closer. (weapon range is the limiting factor.)

Wow thanks for all the replies! This is the first im asking for advice here and didn´t think I´d get help this fast.

 

Since I really want to be able to pretty much run as much graphics as possible, not absolutely EVERYTHING but I don´t want to comprimise graphics for performance, especially when it comes to lighting and enb effects, it seems to me that I kind of need a 30-series card with atleast 10gb.

I´m not sure I´m willing to pay that much for a computer at the moment and I´m tempted to wait to see what will happen to the market when Nvidia releases their 40-series.

 

Do you think the release of the 40-series will be impactful enough that it´s worth to wait for it?

(If you haven´t heard about it I really suggest looking it up, from what I´ve read it seems like those cards will take a big leap forward in terms of sheer power)

Vid card prices are already coming down.... The market seems to have peaked, and is now on the decline. The last batch of vid cards we had at work, we actually LOST money on, prices have dropped so much.

 

Nvidia changed their architecture from the 20 series cards, to the 30 series. The performance improvement was incredible. I have no clue when the 40 series will be coming out though..... but yeah, the 'high performance' vid cards are usually fairly expensive. The only reason I got my 3070 when I did, was because my boss gave me a REALLY good deal on it.

 

Skip the 12gb 3060 series cards, they look good, but, are performance-limited at resolutions greater than 1080p. Also, you don't absolutely need all the ram on the vid card itself either. My 8gb card does a VERY nice job. If you want to get really bizarre on the ENB's, and textures and such, a 3070 would be the minimum card I would be looking at, 3080 would be even better. and as was suggested above, for that kind of behavior, 32gb of system ram would be a REAL good idea. :D
