LDKSuperDante
Hello everyone, hopefully someone can help me out here. Long story short, I've had two users tell me about a strange issue with Vortex. Basically, if the mod is installed manually, there are no issues, but for them, when using Vortex, the game crashes because it can't load a specific file. But the two methods of installation use the exact same files, so I'm not sure what the issue could be, especially since it only seems to be affecting these two people out of thousands of downloads. I can give more info if need be, thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to help me out.
rmm200
Your users with the problem need to send you a screenshot of their game directory. It sounds like that specific file is not in the correct location. What Deploy method does Vortex use for them? Hardlink, Symlink, or Move?
Pickysaurus
Could you provide more details, like the link to the mod you're talking about? Users can right-click on a mod and click "Create Report" which will give them some extra data about the mod, the files and where they were deployed. LDKSuperDante
Sorry I forgot to check in sooner. I'll link the page at the end of this post. To answer some of the questions, I don't know what deployment system these users have, but I also don't know how that affects things. I had never given the option for Mod manager installation before since I had heard from others it could cause issues with this particular game, but I finally decided to offer it because enough people asked anyway. I double checked and can confirm that the file causing an issue is in the correct place, and I also have never modded it in the first place, so I don't know why it's causing an issue. Especially because this issue is only present with a Vortex installation, but not manually just pasting it in. Manually pasting it in gives the exact same files because they are packaged into something called a .arc for Dragon's Dogma. Cleaner Female Body Texture at Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen Nexus - Mods and community (nexusmods.com) (Warning, the textures are anatomically correct.) Thanks again for everyone taking the time to help me out, I'm not too experienced with Mod Managers since I do everything manually, so I very much appreciate the help. Tannin42
Dragon's Dogma is one of the more complex games to mod.All assets are contained in huge arc (archive) files and almost all mods change the same ones, specifically game_main.arc is modified in a large number of mods.If you manually install mods the archives will simply overwrite each other so you're quite limited in which mods you can combine, you can only have one mod that changes game_main.arc. Vortex solves this as it unpacks the archives - both original and the ones from the mods - identifies the specific files that were changed by the mod and then creating a new archive with the changes from all mods combined (assuming they don't overlap). That is likely why things break with Vortex and not when installing manually: If your users install your mod manually, they have only your mod in game_main.arc and nothing else, other mods they tried to install are replaced. With Vortex it tries to merge these mods and that probably goes wrong for some reason. As such it would be really useful to know which other mods those affected users have installed.
LDKSuperDante
I'll copy this reply and ask them about it, thanks for the info! I'm very familiar with how Dragon's Dogma files work, but had no idea how Vortex worked.
LDKSuperDante
Okay, the first two with an issue haven't said anything since my last reply, but one user posted this and I thought I'd share in case it was helpful."I've done some investigating and I believe I found the issue. For me at least it looks like vortex only merges game_main.arc, I have two mods that also change title.arc. After manually merging title.arc and including it in the last mod to be loaded the error is gone."
Tannin42
Vortex 1.6.2 should merge title.arc as well. I'm really sorry that I wasn't really able to test this so I depend on user feedback on whether this works
Gwyn21
Have this same exact problem myself. It is also caused by Vortex merging certain mods that change game_main.arc and title-arc.
