Vortex space used

I just download the new collection by eso. It lists as about 63gb or so. My vortex folder mods and downloads included is about 160gb and my skyrim folder is about 80gb.

I have read the other post about hard links but this is not just double the size being read wrong by explorer as I literally cannot use 240gb worth of space I had before installing this collection. of 83gb worth or mods.

The vortex mods folder alone is now 95gb and as stated above my skyrim folder has also grown by about 60gb. Now I know I could technically get rid of the downloads folder but would then be unable to re-install any mods.

Why is it taking up so much space? If I used mo2 with the same setup I assume it would take up about the same space as the mods+downloads folder but NOT the extra 60gb in the main skyrim folder.

What am I missing why does vortex use up so much more space? Is it keeping THREE copies of my mods...

1) in download folder zipped up

2) in mods folder simply uncompressed

3) pushed into the actual skyrim game folder

It seems so and again yes I read about the hard links but windows says that space is used and thus I cannot use it for anything else so does it matter if the file is genuine or a hard link windows doesnt know what to do with but treats like a file using that space?

So currently I have a skyrim install (base is what about 14gb) and the eso collection (about 63gb) So that should be roughly 77gb or so.

Figure once you uncompress all the files they will grow to so lets say 100gb for the install. My install with all supporting files and such is using 245gb.

You say you read the other posts about hard links but you clearly haven't understood them: The hard links in the skyrim game folder do not take up space on your disk. They are not copies, they are links.

You are plain simply wrong about not being able to use the space because it's not gone.

Have an example:

Assume you have a 2TB disk. You have 1.5TB of data on the disk. So you have 0.5TB space left.

Now you create hard links of all the data on disk.

Now you have a 2TB disk. Windows will tell you you have 3TB data on that 2TB disk. And you still have 0.5TB space left.

I'm Sorry Tannin42, what are you talking about? (yes I know this is an old post)

I have Fallout 4 set to hardlink (as it's a hardlink only game) and there is no 'Links' to the files in the Staging folder, A copy of the actual file is in the Fallout 4 Data folder, not a link. All the .esp, .nif, .dds., ECT..... I've deleted mods from Staging Folder and Lunch Fallout 4 by directly clicking F4SE.exe and those mods where still in the game because a copy of the actual files (which takes up space) where still in the Fallout 4 Data folder.

Now I have The Sims 4 set to Symlink and in it's mods folder is nothing but links (Type .symlink), the total data there is 176kb which is the vortex.deployment.json. Now if I deleted a mod from the Sims 4 staging folder and lunch the game, it loads without the mod since the link goes to nothing, restore the file and the link words again and the mod loads. However when i changed it to Hardlink that folder jumped to over 4GB since Vortex copied all the mods.

So tell how that's NOT double the Data when there's 4GB in the stating folder and a copy of the same 4GB of data in the Mod folder?????? I have over 50GB of mods (314) for Fallout 4 and my Fallout 4 Folder is almost at 150GB instead of 90GB like it should be (All DLC and High res Texture pack).

To use your own words. "You are plain simply wrong "  Hardlink does NOT work the why it is said to, or the way YOU think it does.

A hardlink is indistinguishable from a normal file, that's kind of the point. You can use the command line to confirm it's a hardlink if you don't believe it.

In this example, I have F4SE_Loader.exe from the Fallout 4 Script Extender deployed via hardlink. I then do this:

  1. Open a new Powershell Window in the game folder (hold Shift + Right click -> Open Powershell window here).
  2. Type in the command "fsutil hardlink list f4se_loader.exe"
  3. See a result with two lines which are the two "pointers" which are directed to the same file.
